I wonder if the pallavi should be " cittam irangAdadEnayya", since the two words ( irangAdadu + yEn ) will result only as "irangAdadEn" and NOT "irangAdEn" !
I have heard musicians sing it as it is printed in the book as mentiond by one and all above, including the lyricist's grandson, but I do feel it may be a printer's error that went uncorrected and is perpetuated.

Yes, Sundara Rajan, it is a typo. You would find that rshankar has spelt it correctly in his translation and has explained the compound word by splitting it into: cittam+irangAdadu+En+aiyyA.

Thank you Arasi. I went by Lakshman's and Ashok Ramani's postings only and had missed rshankar's posting before that. It should be noted that many musicians sing only as "iragAdEnayyA" and hope that they will note the correct version.

Ramya,

Here you go:

Oh mother (mAtA) who grants any desire that can be thought of (kalpaka)! Will the reserves of compassion (karuNai) in your (unadu) heart (uLLam) run low (kuraindiDumE) if you find it in your heart to tenderly (kanindu) shower (purindAl) your grace (aruL) on this impoveriished (Ezhaikkum) who offers prayers (paNi) at your (un) the anklets (kazhal) that adorn your feet.
A:
ananta vidamAyun anantam tiru nAmam
ninaindu pulambinEn Sinam taNindu Siridu nI

I have lamented (pulambinEn) as I have remembered/chanted (ninaindu) your (un) myriad (anantam) divine (tiru) names (nAmam) in many different (ananta) ways (vidamAi), so I request you (nI) to dispel (taNindu) this sloth (cinam) of yours and show a little (Siridu) (compassion on me).

Oh queen (purANi) who shares (panguraiyum) half a body with the enemy (ari) of the three cities of the asuras (pura), or Siva, you are the one the Lord (pirAn) of mayilApUr (mAmayilai), kapAli, delights in (magizh). Oh sister (sOdariyE) of the enemy (ari) of the demon mura (vishNu)! Please bless me with (adAl) your (un) lotus-like hands (karAravindam) that grant (tarum) the boon (vara) of fearlessness (abhayam)! Will your compassion run low if you find it in your heart to tenderly shower your grace on me without (koLLAmal) turning your face away (pArAmukham) from me because (enru) I am destitute (parAdhi)?

The famous song 'vadanamE chandra bimbamO' was written by Sri Papanasam Sivan for the film Sivakavi. The following information on this song provided in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sivakavi is interesting:-

The lyrics for the songs were penned by the music director Papanasam Sivan. He originally penned the song Vadaname Chandra Bhimbamo as Mugam Adhu Chandra Bimbamo. But when M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar pointed out to Sivan how "Mugam Adhu" sounded like "Muhammad", Sivan changed it to "Vadaname".

The stories relating to Sivan's mentor (late A.K.Ramachandra Iyer in whose family even trash cans will sing in perfect pitch!!) remind us of those greats like Sivan who never forgot the patronage they received at the hands of mentors like AKR-no matter how famous they themselves became--sign of the times. One cannot but lament the indiference by some of the contemporary musicians towards mentors who may have contributed to their "stardom".
I have seen a diary maintained by Sivan in the Mid/late thirties--it was a Hoe and Co diary--famous in Chennai in the twenties and thirties)--one page would contain a song and if there is space for a quarter of a page, will be filed in with Dhobhi account(#of Dhotis, shirts etc)--in the opposite page facing the page of the composition, would be accounts of vegetables/fruits bought and their prices and quantities--another page would contain another song and the space remaining will be devoted to details of Rly fares and timings --from mayavaram to Chennai-in fact I used to joke to my father (to whom Ashok Ramani had loaned the diary to do a write-up on Sivan's centenary celebs in 1990) that if economists were starved of reliable data on the consumer price indices of those days all that one had to do was to borrow Sivan's diary--seldom have I seen Laukikam and Divinity so closely intertwined!!!

That is a delightful recollection MKR.
I had my uncle's Hoe and Co diary of the 20's and used to be amazed by the prices in those days. They also summarized succinctly our family history... In fact all such diaries should be archived out of historical interest

In a Lec-Dem on Sri P.Sivan, Sri DKJ said that he was the one to point this out, and how Sri Sivan, who was so much older than he (DKJ) was, had no problems in accepting the critique of a young boy, and changing the lyrics.

The natabhairavi( sri valli deva) & kalyani( Unnai...) songs in addition to many more PS songs are available in this folder.

Not true.

He was from the village of Polagam which is in the Tanjore delta.

At a young age, his widowed mother took her children to Trivandrum to make a living for herself.

He studied Sanskrit at the local school and supposedly did not have formal schooling in the Tamil language.

This gives rise to the false impression that his mother tongue was Malayalam.

Papanasam Sivan was the chinna mAmanAr (father-in-law's younger brother) of Tamil matinee idol and Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, MGR, himself a Malayali. Sivan's elder brother P.R.Rajagopala Iyer took a Malayali as his second wife and to them was born V.N.Janaki who acted in films and later became MGR's wife. Sivan's early years in Trivandrum and this MGR relationship are his only Malayali connections. He was a pakkA Tanjorean.

A share from my friend Shri Kannan

I was a bachelor residing in South Mada Street, Mylapore, in late Fifties and early Sixties. I used to accompany Papanasam Sivan as a member of his famous "Bhajanai Ghoshti" doing the round on the Four Streets of Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple on all mornings before sunrise during the sacred month of Margazhi (December and January) when Sivan would render passionately his great compositions.

He was pretty ripe in age and toothless too. But great Musicians of his time, like Madurai Mani Iyer, K.V. Narayanaswamy. D.K. Pattammal, G.N.B, M.L. Vasanthakumari and a few other professionals joined him on special days to listen and learn how he sang his own compositions.

In one of his rarest of appearances, Madurai Mani Iyer, not very healthy that time, was prodded by the great Sivan gently, to sing a song. Mani Iyer sang, in his inimitable manner, Sivan's lyrically beautiful and evergreen composition that he popularised, on the Presiding Deity of Mylapore, Sri Kapaleeswarr, "Kapali, Nin Karunai...".

Everybody in the huge gathering on North Mada Street (A Grand Sweets Branch has opened its shop there now) was simply and visibly moved. Sivan, equally touched, said emotionally: "Mani, pinnale par, yar ninnindu thalai attinduirukkarnu. sakshath kapaliye vandhu nikkiraple ille?"

Stirred and impressed by this spiritually-charged comment of the great composer, everybody stood still, looking at the rear; . But we, mere mortals, saw nothing. But the great Sivan. looked entranced and with eyes moist, looked at the background of Sri Mani Iyer and did a 'Namasthe' with folded hands. We were all mesmerised and felt cleansed by this gesture of the grratt Sivan. The exclusive Darshan of Lord Siva given to Papanasam Sivan was the talking point in the Bhajanai that day.

When Papanasam Sivan was conferred the prestigious Award of "Sangeetha Kalanidhi" by the Music Academy in the year 1971, I was in the last row in the Balcony of the Auditorium standing and applauding. That was a Red Letter Day in my life.

Dear Sri.Thanjavooran,
VERY MOVING & YOUR ACCOUNT BROUGHT NOT ONLY TEARS BUT UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES OF THAT PERIOD ('50-'59) when I also attended the Margazhi Bhajanai Ghosthi.. Wish you had written it before CLEVELAND FESTIVAL (during SIVAN SYMPOSIUM) where I related similar happenings involving Ramnad Krishnan, LGJ etc. What a period it was. I related the story of Feynman meeting Einstein & describing it as equivalent to meeting GOD. I said being in the presense of SIVAN WAS TO ME a similar experience & the only other time I felt so was when Mahatma Gandhi got down from the train at Tambaram Railway Station & just smiled for a few minutes(It was his day of Silence). PLEASE WRITE YOUR EXPERIENCES MORE. VKV :!:

Can someone please translate this?
As every member of rasikas doesn't read tamizh, these posts in languages other than English can sound like the proceedings of a secret society that excludes them - even if that was not the intention of the posting.

It takes me a lot of time to read such long posts in tamil as I am not a regular reader of tamil and I agree with Ravi - a parellel translation in english is suggested.

... translation in english is suggested.
Here is the gist of the contents :-

"There are Sanskrit-English and English-Sanskrit dictionaries, but there seems to be no Sanskrit-Tamil dictionary !

"However, someone gave a reference to a book named 'Samskrita Bhasha Shabda Samudra' written by Papanasam Sivan. This was published in 1954, and the second edition came out in 2000. Unfortunately, this a not a dictionary. Sivan has compiled rhyming words in Sanskrit, which could be of use to those who are familar with Sanskrit and who wish to write Sanskrit kritis as per prasa rules."
