Needed slokam: sringArO vAma bhAgE

Place to go if you want to ask someone identify raga, tala, composer etc or ask for sāhitya (lyrics) or notations or translations.

Needed slokam: sringArO vAma bhAgE

Post by RaviSri »

The documentary on T.Balasaraswati made by Satyajit Ray begins with the slokam, 'sringArO vAma bhAgE'. I am able to hear only these three words properly. Can anyone give me the full sloka? It is, I think, on Siva.

Ravisri,
Search in progress:
This is a navarasa shloka on Shiva composed by Melattur Veerabhadrayya, guru of Ramaswami Dikshitar.
Will get the words soon, I hope.

navarasabharitaH pArvatI-sahitaH sa pAtu naH
(typed by me based on inputs)
Meaning
He embodies" Love "
with Parvati sitting on His left;the cool moon in His tresses instills" Santa";the presence of His Trident implies "Heroism";"Laughter" is evoked by His mount,the bull;His extended begging bowl is filled with "Compassion:His garland of Skulls and bones evoke"Disgust";"Fear" is created by the snakes that adorn his neck and arms;Seeing His blue throat evokes "Wonder";"Terror"is aroused by His third eye.May Lord Siva ,who embodies the nine rasas protect us all.

I received the words and meaning from Smt Nandini Ramani, the daughter of Dr Raghavan and a disciple of the famous Dhanammal family.

Terror and fear are the same, right? Terror a more extreme form of fear?
Shouldn't raudram be anger or ferociousness?

Fear=bhaya is a basic scare (even a thief feels it during his getaway).
Raudra means something that shakes me to my foundations with terror.
MW(2014 edition) :
violent, impetuous, wrathful, irascible, savage,
wild, fearful, terrible, formidable; acute

Very nice Sachi,

I didn't know this aspect of Virabhadrayya. Have made a few emendations based on metrical considerations of sragdharA. Your version is more like the anvaya, and helps with understanding the verse better.

zRngArO vAmabhAgE paTu'makuTa'taTI'dhAmni zAMtas'trizUlE
vIraH hAsO'tha vAhE param'atha karuNO bhaikSa-pAtrE'sthi-hArE |
bhIbhatsO bAhu-bhUz'Anilabhuji bhayabhUr'adbhutaH kaNTha'nIlE
raudraH phAlastha'nEtrE navarasa'bharitaH pArvatIzas'sa pAtu ||

There still is a minor dissatisfaction with the available reading, since at the rasa based adjectives are in the locative (saptami) whereas the last two epithets are in the nominative (prathama), which alone is in concord with the verb pAtu.

p.s. On reflection, I realised that the prathamA declension of the rasas [zRGgAro zantaH etc] and of pArvatIzah and navarasa'bharitah smooths out what I thought was a problem.

Keerthi,
thank you.
Yes, I thought the implication was Shiva was the personification of the various rasas (dwelling in them - Saptami)
