It is a Janya Raga, derived from Dhira Shankharabharanam, 29th on the Melakarta scale.

anda muRuvalil mayangudu ulagu

kuLumaikku avan oRu nilavu
(nee) kumarA ena solli pazhagu

vEdangaL kURiDum OLiyE
uyar vElODu viLaiyaDum ezhilE
turaviyum virumbiya turavE
(alternate: turavigal virumbiDum uRavE)
(nI) turaviyAy ninDRiTTa (ninDRiDum) tiruvE

Translation :

Lord Murugan's (Muruganin) other (maru) name (peyar) is 'beauty' (azhagu)!
That (his) smile is (anda muruvalil) enchanting (mayangudu) the whole world (ulagu)

Pallavi: Another name for Murugan is “beauty”. In that smile of hils the whole world gets enchanted.

For coolness (kuLUmaikku) he is (avan oru) the moon (nilavu)!
(Nee- you) Practice (pazhagu) saying (ena solli) Kumara (name of Murugan)

Anupallavi: He is like the moon for coolness. Oh mind utter the name “KumarA” always. Can be inetrpreted as a Nayika as well as a bhaktar.

Vedas (vedangal) mention this (kuridum) divine light (oliye)!
With the best of spears (uyar vElODu) he plays (vilaiyadum) gracefully (ezhilE)!
(You are/he is) All other ascetics (turaviyum) favourite (virumbiya/virumbidum) ascetic (turave)
You (nee) chose to stay as a sanyasi (thuraviyai nindritta) oh divine one (tiruve)!

CaraNam: He is the divine light mentioned by the vEdAs. He plays gracefully with his superior spear. He is an ascetic who is the favourite of all other ascetics. He is the divine one who chose to stay as a sanyAsi**

** In the hill temple Pazhani Lord Murugan is featured as an ascetic with just a loin cloth and holy ash. He is called “daNDAyuthapANi” (holding a staff in his hand)
