The wonder (adbhutam) of ayyappa’s (ayyappan) birth (avadaritta) was for the redemption (uyya) of the world (akhilam). He (avan) is maNikaNThan, who defeated/won over (venRa) the demoness, mahishi (mahishiyai) who was torturing (vATiDum) the three worlds (mubhuvanangaLai).

Bearing (tAngiyumE) the irumuDi (irumuDiyai) [1] on our heads, we walked (naDandu vandOm) with discipline (viradattODu) [2], and with single-minded concentration (orumaiyuDan) we climbed (Eri) the 18 (padineTTu) steps (paDi), we came (vandOm) to behold (kANa) you (unai).

(You) are the one who protects (kAttu) and blesses (aruLbavan) those that have sought (aDaindavarai) refuge (SaraNam) (in you), (the one) who has created a temple (kOvil) in the hearts (nenjilE) of people/devotees (makkal) and occupied (koNDavan) it! He (avan) has a face (mugan) that surpasses (minjiDum) the brightness (oLiyinai) of the sun (aruNanin), who became enshrined (Alayam Anavan) to establish that everyone (anaivarum) is the same (samam ena).

The one who went (senRavanaE) to the forest (vanam) when his mother (tAi), without (inRi) reason (kAraNam), asked (uraiyAl) him to bring (koNar enRa) her the milk (pAl) of a tigress (puli), who not only milked (pAl karandu) a tigress (puli), but sat (amamrdu) on top (mEl) of the tigress, and joyously (kaLippODu) returned (vandu) leading a procession (bavani) to the amamzement (viyarka) of many (palar), (I seek refuge in you, ayyappA, Oh resident of Sabarimalai).

Lover (priyanE) of the sounds (oli) from instruments such as the pampai [3], pEri [4], and mattaLam [5], a holy (pAvani) figure (mUrti), (like) the Sun (divAkaranE)! Who is drenched (nanaibavanE) in an anointment (abhishEkattil) of ghee (ney), who is (like) sandal paste (candananE) used to make the forehead (meTri) acquire (peRa) fragrance (maNam)! Who grants (aLippavanE) knowledge (gynAnamum) as well as salvation (mOkshamum), who blesses us (aruLbavanE) as the brilliant makarajyOti (makarajyOtiyAi)! The lord (ayyanE) who is evident/visible (kaNkaNDa) even in kaliyuga (kaliyuma adilE), who makes (seibavanE) even inferior human beings (kaDaiyarum) attain salvation (kaDaitERa).

[1] irumuDi is a package that is carried on the head – it has two compartments – one for offerings at the temple to the lord, and the other for necessities while the person walks/travels to the temple
[2] viratam is a religious vow, but in this context it refers to the really discipline that is observed by the people who make the pilgrimage to Sabarimala
[3] pampai is a tabour – a drum that is played with one hand, while playing another with the other hand
[4] a pEri/bEri is a kettle drum or timpani – a membrane or drumhead stretched across a hemispherical or parabolic bowls typically made of copper
[5] mattalam – a drum made of jack fruit wood, with leather on both sides for playing
