Translation of Enna Paliso Karunakara (Purandara Dasa) please!

Post by student-rasika »

Hello,

I would greatly appreciate a translation of Purandara Dasa's song in Kannada, "Enna paliso karunakara." Pt. Bhimsen Joshi popularized this song, listen to him singing it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbEqCu9c80E. Here's the Trichur Brothers' lively take on the composition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDh69N-wjuc

Here are the lyrics. I don't know Kannada, so I apologize for any errors:

Pallavi: enna pAlisO karuNAkara

Anupallavi: pannaga shayana gadAdhara

Charanams:
dEvaki nandana hari madhu-sUdhana
asurAntaka muralI-dhara
visaruva-nAbha sarvE shanemuni
mAnasa sancAre mAdhava

parama puruSa pura dAsana vAhana
duritA nava vaTavAlana
sarasIja-bhava girijA-vallabha nuta
vara sujanAvali pAvana

kAvana pita mucakunda varadana
jIva-nayana nArAyaNa
shrI-vatsalAncana gurumayi-pati-suta
jIvana-sakha shri kRiSNa

Here is a more correct version:

ĕnna pāliso karuṇākara
pannagaśayana gadādhara

devakinaṁdana harimadhusūdana
asurāntaka muraḽīdhara
bisaruhanābha sarveśanĕ muni-
-mānasasaṁcāra mādhava

paramapuruṣa uragāśanavāhana
karuṇārṇava vaḍavānala
sarasijodbhava girijāvallabhanuta
varasujanāvaḽipālana

kāmanapita mucakuṁdavarada rā-
-jīvanayana nārayaṇa
śrīvatsalāñchana gurumahīpati
jīvanasakha śrīkṛṣṇana

sāhitya: mahīpatidāsaru
gāyana: ḍā. bhīmasena jośi

The composer is not Purandara Dasa but Mahipati Dasa.

Beautiful! Thank you.

Can "sarasijodbhava girijāvallabhanuta" be interpreted as 'one to whom Siva (girijA vallabha) and brahma (sarasijOdhbhava) bow down to (nuta)'?

Ravi, yes, one can interpret it that way. Perhaps that was intended too.

It didn't strike me as a native Kannada speaker because Kannada poetic construction doesn't work like that, this type of construction is more a Samskrita thing ☺️
