Couple of 45 min+ videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFfdmRSvF-Y

Accompanied by the inimitable MSG, and Palghat Raghu on the mridangam.
Should be at least 25 years ago, if that message on the screen was indeed recorded live.

One more concert : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y17i0TUbuNg
This is actually two concert fragments pieced together. The latter half contains the songs individually posted above - the Manjari, Shankarabaranam pieces and so on.

His wikipedia doesn't mention sangeetha kalAnidhi being elevated because of him. Another grand overlook on part of the organization?

This is Doordarshan Chennai recording in the year 1989, just a few months before he passed away. This kris is followed by a beautiful janaranjini (nadadinamata), Varali (maragadamani varna) and a behave javeli.

That was Sanjay Subramaniam accompanying KSK. This was a concert belonging to 1994 or 95. I attended it.

Was listening this RTP in Shankarabharanam by the great Voleti:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbUDfBT5aRA

The violin return is well..unusual to say the least...pretty straightforward for most of it, but in several stretches, the closest I've ever heard in a traditional kutcheri to sounding like western violin (obviously with s'bharanam this is not a stretch per se).

In the tanam too, esp listen around 19:45 or so!! Or from 20:45 on..and maybe most markedly at 21:40!! When did the movie Sound of Music release as a movie by the way? An inspiration :) :D

Does anyone know who the violinist was and when this concert occurred? It doesn't sound like MSG, and has Lalgudi-like elements but hard to believe Lalgudi Mama would do this. Ideas?

I can't decide whether I like it or not...but it certainly was a novelty..

For about the millionth time in the last 3 months how I miss my father (Sri MKR), would have loved to get his take :(

Thank you! Lalgudi Mama must have been in an 'experimental' mood that day! Having listened to hundreds if not thousands of his concerts before, I don't think I ever recall this before. A collector's item for that alone!

Yes, it was hard to believe that it could be LGJ! It didn’t have too many of his style “markers” either that I have in mind, which usually appear naturally in the flow! This was not too appealing to me, and I don’t like the feeling that LGJ produced anything that was not perfect in my mind! I feel it can’t be and i must be at fault, but I didn’t enjoy those moments. It feels disjointed in my memory.

It didn’t sound like western violin to me, but was rather reminiscent of the notion of nottu swaram.

The movie The Sound of Music was released in 1965. But most American movies came rather late to Chennai, and I think it played in Safire theater sometime in 1968 or ‘69.

"was rather reminiscent of the notion of nottu swaram" - I agree!

But your statement "It didn’t sound like western violin to me" doesn't 'ring' with me...

AFAIK Nottu swaram is directly associated with western classical (or 'semi-classical' actually) music influence by many scholars:

http://www.kanniks.com/nottusvara.htm

Or via Wiki: "They [nottu swarams] are notable as an interaction between the East and the West during Company rule, being based on Western sources, mostly simple melodies inspired by Scots and Irish tunes. They are all composed with Sanskrit lyrics in the Western C major scale, whose pitch intervals correspond to that of the Shankarabharana raga scale in Carnatic music, or the Bilaval that of Hindustani music. Technically, the compositions are not in Shankarabharana proper, being based on simple melodies and devoid of the ornamentation (gamaka) that is characteristic of Carnatic music."

To the extent that it’s just a matter of opinion (mine), it’s ok for us to disagree.

This is my thinking:

I know that nottuswarams were inspired by Western music, and use the major scale, the Shankarabharanam scale, but don’t have the gamaka characteristics or the usages of Shankarabharanam. But in my opinion. It is unconnected to western classical or even semi classical music. It has none of the richness of either music. No nottuswaram even uses any other scale than the major scale. It’s a rather simplistic reduction of western music by Dikshitar, but may be that’s what he was exposed to. It probably wasn’t easy to be exposed to more than the obvious major scale.

But all that aside those notes in this recording don’t remind me of actual western violin, but they do remind me of Dikshitar’s interpretation or possible perception of Western music, as we hear in the Nottuswarams. Sri LGJ’s foray into that is also rather basic, and uninteresting in my view. Writing this is almost taking my own breath away! But it’s ok in my mind.. LGJ didn’t continue to play in this fashion, and as you say he might have been in an experimental mood.

Frankly i don’t know why they perform nottuswarams in concerts. We don’t perform Geetams, why these?

It’s not as if they ever take off from these compositions and develop on them through manodharma.. so I get bored by them in concerts.

@ranganayaki Thanks for the clarification. I think we actually agree on all points i.e., nottuswarams are a rather simplistic reduction of western music (call it classical or semi or whatever), it doesn't really transpose well to our music, doesn't capture the imagination per se, and I'm very glad it didn't become a common feature in CM for LGJ or anyone else. As you rightfully said, it seems sacrilegious to even say anything that even *sounds* mildly critical as he has given us more than enough breathtaking moments to last many lifetimes. And perhaps we are wrong and others may enjoy it!?

A short aside: when Lalgudi Mama would visit NY for tours, he would often stay at our house. We had an old piano in the basement, mostly unused :(, but we'd wake up many mornings to hear Mama in the basement (which was often colder than the rest of the house), wrapped in a shawl, etc. playing out various notes and 'tunes' on the piano for an hour or more solo! Then an hour later, he'd be practicing a pristine Shanmukhapriya or Shankarabharanam on the violin upstairs. His curiosity and sheer and absolute immersion in music was a joy to behold and a reminder that greatness is not just born it is cultivated, nurtured and developed over decades.

I recently 'discovered' the 1978 Voleti-LGJ-T. Sankaran concert based on a rasikas post on 'best concerts' (I'm sure you know it well, the Arabhi, the Kharaharapriya, the Kalyani RTP, LGJ's Pahaadi thillana, etc.). Speaking of breathtaking...wow, Voleti's voice in perfect form, Lalgudi Mama scintillating, Sankaran Mama elevating all of it, it's a reminder of what happens when all the magic coalesces just right...

This is a concert held in Krishna Gana Sabha in the late 70s and it is indeed Lalgudi on the Violin and Palakad Raghu

My Favs of this great maestro are his bhajans, which touch my heart and bring me immense joy,

Some include Khelathi in Sindhubhairavi, and even his dhanyasi was simply beautiful.
