Senior desciple of legend Sri. Palakkad T S Mani Iyer. His peers at "Guru Sannidhi" includes Palakkad Raghu, Umayalpuram K Sivaraman, and V Kamalakar Rao. Prof. Velukkutty Nair is presently the senior-most Mridangam Vidwan in Kerala, and one of the senior-most in India.

Retired as Professor & Head, Department of Mridangam, Sri. Swathi Thirunal College of Music, Trivandrum.

He is equally good in vocal too. There are occassions where Umayalpuram played mridangam for Velukkutty Nair's concert.

Titles received includes "Sangeetha Kalaacharya" by Madras Music Academy, "Gayakarathna" by Sri. Swathi Thirunal Sangeetha Sabha, "Mridanga Vadya Shiromani", "Thansen Sangeetha Kalanidhi", "Gana Laya Visharath", "Mridanga Chakravarthy", etc etc etc.

An "A Top" artist in AIR.

Accompanied concerts of 4 generations. His accompaniments include GNB, Chembai, Shemmamgudi, Alathoor Brothers, Madhurai Mani Iyer, KVN, Balamuraleekrishna, Dr. K J Yesudas, T V Sankaranarayanan, T V Seshagopalan, and so on.

A great teacher - he owns a very big network of desciples - Changanasseri B. Harikumar, T V Vasan, Parassala B Ravi, Alleppey G Chandrasekharan Nair, Trivandrum V Surendran, Kadakkavoor G S Rajeshnath, Erickavu N Sunil, R. Vaidyanathan, Kadanad V K Gopi, Vaikom P S Venugopal, the list is endless.

As rightly said, Velukkutty sir is the top most Mridangam Vidwan from Kerala. He is equally ease at singing. Of late (since 7-8 years) he also started giving vocal concerts. His disciples are a legion. Kudos to suneeth.krishnan for starting a thread in the name of this great Vidwan.

Velukkutty Sir is really a legend in Mridangam .... the real maestro from kerala ...... and a great man too ....

is he not mavelikkara krishnan kutty nair? or krishnan kutty nair is different? I have heard an excellent thani in a chembai's concert.

chalanata - Krishnan Kutty Nair is different. He is no more now.

Velukkutty Sir and team's Percussion Ensemble in Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan Concert was broadcased by All India Radio on 25-10-2009 at 10:30 PM through all AIR stations.
