Param,
Here is a big boquet of thanks for that wonderful BMK/BJ Jugalbandhi video, which is indeed a very rare collection worth preserving for posterity.I am thoroughly enjoying the same and it has kindled also nostalgic memories of watching this live on Doordarshan in the good old days, when there used to be only a single channel and still we used to get quality classical music programs to really captivate ardent rasikas like me.
God bless you for your painstaking efforts to collect such rare gems and share it with other music lovers.

Coolkarni/ Param/other CMF members,
By any chance are the following BMK songs available?:
1."Thunai neeye kumara" in Charukesi, a song in praise of Lord Murugan.
2." Aaya kalaigalukellam Arasiye Amma", an invocation to Goddess Saraswati in Mohanam.
3."Varuga Varugavey, maamayil eyriye" in Panthuvarali, again in praise of Lord Murugan.
Will be much obliged if these could be provided, and preferably in one zip file
Thanks in anticipation..
Sivaraman.

Param,
That Hamsavinodhini was enthralling. Thanks for the U/L.
And what about the raga lakshana of Hamsavinodhini?
Is it Shankarabaranam without panchamam?
Can you confirm and elaborate on this rare raga?

Ravi,
To my knowlege, yes these are BMK's own compositions, which I have heard him sing at different concerts and they all contain the mudra, "Murali".But may be he was assisted in this task by his wife, Abhayambika, since I doubt that BMK is that much of a scholar in Tamil.Maybe Coolkarni can throw more light on this.

Param,
I was wrong.Hamsavinodhini is a janya of 29th mela, dheerashankarabaranam. It does not have pa in the aarohana, but has pa in avarohana.

29 dheera shankaraabharaNam janya
Aa: S R2 G3 M1 D2 N3 S
Av: S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S
(Source: http://www.geocities.com/promiserani2/ragash.html)
Are there any other krithis in this raga for which audio is available, maybe from other vidwans?I am interested in knowing the mood of the raga, and when can it be sung ( time of the day).

Dr.Shrikant,
There seems to be some confusion about the swaras of Hamsavinodhini.Whereas the Karnatik.com website of Rani mentions that there is panchamam in avarohanam, the Carnatica.net website of Sowmya mentions that panchamam is absent both in aarohanam and avarohanam.
Can you clarify this confusion?

Pallavi:
Vande Maataram: Prostration to the mother
Andi: Says, Maataram: our generation, Mundadugidu: Steps forward,

Our generation prostrate to the mother(India???)

Anupallavi:
Mana: Our, Bhaavitaram: next/future generation, Pondudu: will get/possess, Aananda:happy, Mandaaram: China rose

Our future generation will be happy- Here happiness has been attributed to China rose(hibiscus), mostly because china roses are red in colour which symbolises protection/security/happiness.

Charanam:
Virisenu: Blossomed, Bhuvipai: on earth, Aravindam:lotus, Kurisenu: Rained, manapai: on us, Makarandam: nectar, Merisenu: Flashed, murali:flute, Muresnu: become happy, Kavi(poet), Gayaka:Singer, Brindam:folks

All the earth looks blossomed and rain appears to be nectar, the sound of a flute soothing, all of which make the poets and an singers cheerful

Basically the song picturises everything in the subcontinent beautiful and happier..

There is a commercial release too, where BMK sings 4 of his 'creations' - mahati, sumukham, lavangi and sarvasrI

Do we have to discuss about the greatness of Dr.MBK? His contribution to CM is immense and immeasurable. Please listen to his Music Academy 1975 concert on the bicent. celebrations of Shri Muthuswami Dikshitar.A composition on him in the raga Sucharitram could pass off as a Dikshitar composition. So scholarly and profound.Yet another concert of his at the Music Club wherein he sings a wonderful RTP in Hamsadwani will bear my view that such an exercise is futile.I had the chance to hear his unforgetable Delhi concert in the company of Prof T.N.Krishnan and Shri K,Sivaraman. The profund impact of that concert full of Tyagaraja krithis is still lingering in my memory Any one has recording of that concert ....... Perhaps none of the three.
Tyagaraja, the great Carnatic composer spent most of his life in Tanjore district and trained several great musicians until he passed away in 1847. One of them was his cousin Akumalla (Manambuchavadi) Venkatasubbayya. During his lifetime Venkatasubbayya also attracted several students and one of them was Susarla Dakshinamurthy Sastry (1860-1917). Sastry’s devotion to music drove him to walk all the way to Tamilnadu from his native Krishna district. After learning music from Venkatasubbayya, Dakshninamurthy Sastry returned to Andhra Pradesh. Sastry was the first to bring the musical tradition of Tyagaraja to Andhra region and several students benefited from him. One of them was Parupalli Ramakrishnayya (1883-1951) who is known today as the guru of the eminent vocalist Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna.
