One of the seniormost mridangists of the current times who keeps the Palghat Mani Iyer tradition going with 99% purity is Sri T.R.Rajamani, the former's eldest son and disciple. For whatever unknown reason, Sri Rajamani has been lying low inspite of his tremendous caliber as an artist.
I found some videos (a thani of his divided into five parts) on youtube, they are a "must watch" for anyone having interest in laya.

It would be a shame if we dont rush to save his musical treasure for posterity. As far as his art is concerned, my opinion is that he is a veritable 2nd avatar of his illustrious father. We should see him performing more often.

Not just in terms of his art, his appearance and voice is uncannily similar to that of Mani iyer. He is very unassuming and gracious.
Rasikas who go to Palghat should visit him.

Has Rajamony sir shifted to Palakkad? As far as I know he lives in Kalamassery, near Alwaye (Aluva) in Ernakulam district. He used to work in HMT @ Kalamassery. He has a legion of disciples.keerthi wrote:Rasikas who go to Palghat should visit him.

I agree with the forumites that Rajamony should be persuaded to come out of his self-imposed shell. I have known him well for the last 50 years==partly thro his father and partly thro our parallel engineering education(Alagappa College Karaikudi--he was 2 years junior to me).My brother stays in touch with him constantly. TR is currently working on bringing out multi-media(text/recordings etc) and is interested in gathering any private recordings of his late father that rasikas might have.
If any of the forumites--especially VKV-- have any such recordings please let me know. I will have TR get in touch with you.
For the record, even when he was young in his twenties Alathur Brothers used to run Pallavis by him and when it came to Kanakku,TR was a genius by himelf. My brother and TR used to practice together in Chennai and my brother always used to comment on the uncanny anticipation and "opportunism"(in mridangam parlance the ability to discern an opening at the last minute in a swara prasthara and come up with an appropriate porutham for the interval--all in the flash of a second.
He is as principled and be stubborn in his convictions as his late father.
He had written a series of articles in a Malayalam magazine about his father and was enquiring if those could be translated into English. I do not know where it stands.
He generally visits his daughter in the US and has taught a couple of students in NJ.perhaps on his next visit(he rarely comes to madras and two years back played for his niece(Nithyashree) in Mrs. YGP's sabha in Mambalam.
If there is one person who can articulate PMI's art and techniques and nuances, that wouldbe TR!!!
