Post by maamoondi »

The carnatic music world has lost one more illustrious vidwan - Sri T V Vasan. the brother of Gurujee TVG (TV Gopalakrishnan)

May his soul attain moksha and eternal peace.

My deepest condolences to his family and relatives.

while I a student at Govt Arts college, Thycaud, Trivandrum during the seventies, I used to visit Sri Vasan who was put up nearby. Many artists (including teachers of the Swati tirunal music academy and AIR) used to come there and several impromptu music sessions would take place. Though specialized in Ghatam, Vasan revelled in playing the Mridanga. His brother TVG would be there whenever he was at TVM and several interesting discussions took place many of them centering around Chemabai- TVG's guru. Nagaswaram vidwan, Sri Thiruvizha jaishankar, (AIR) also dropped in frequently.

Govt colleges in TVM were infamous for 'students strikes' and that enabled me to visit Sri Vasan many a time. We turned to very good friends. He often used to tell me that it is always better to have music as an active hobby than a full time profession. That became true in my case!

I miss him very much.
