It is very unfortunate that Radha&Jayalakshmi have been forgotten and neglected by the rasikas. in the fiftiesthey cut several discs. Their Suruti singing'Saadaramava sarasija dalasunayanaa' of swathi Thirunaal hasn't been sung by anyone else. Jayalakshmi's voice has the frutinees of early MLV. MLV&R&J have sung several cinema songs in Tamil &Telugu and they are everprecious treasures. R&J have sung several songs scored by SM Subbiah Naidu and they are just unbelievable for the range of voice, musical excellence and flawless execution.

Posted from R&J 1962 performance at "Parvathi" Mysore...RTP in Shanmukhapriya and Eviramata in Kambodi. In Chowdiah's words this was a superb performance from the two 'GNB's in Sarees' as he appreciatingly called them. http://chowdaiahandparvati.blogspot.com/

the last address that I met mesdame radha jayalakshmi in just about 2003-04 was 36, car street , saidapet, chennai. their house was bank opposite to the saidapet railway station on the karaneeswarar koil street side. can anyone tell me where they shifted? may i also submit with all humility that I had the fortune of learning a couple of songs from them.

there was a side-note on Dinamani's Music Season page saying that The sisters now live in Palavakkam (or somewhere near there) with another cousin of theirs. they are not able to perform and hence have preferred to stay away from any attention. it also said they are aware of all the happenings in the music world. i think the writer even mentioned that he/she had a personal telephonic conversation with them.

will see if i can find it online somewhere

Hello,
I have not seen much discussion about this duo or about their performances these days or about them getting awards etc. Where are they now? Do they have any disciples who have become performers now?

It is unfortunate that the music lovers and sabhas have totally ingored their contribution to carnatic music. Till 1990s they were active in their field and their concerts were much loved by music lovers. After the Female trinity of concert music, their concert was the choice. They were disciples of GNB and had taken great initiative in popularising GNB compositions. The late GBD, son of GNB have once told me their version of GNB kritihis were very authentic. But while celenbrating GNB centenery with such a aplomb and giving awards to many musicians, the Committee totally ignored their contributions. They were never considered for any award or recognition. It was given to third generation artists too who had learnt GNB songs for getting this recogntion.

From Wikipedia:
Radha and Jayalakshmi - "Now they have stopped giving performances. But they are good teachers. They have performed throughout India. Shanmukhapriya and Haripriya, popularly known as the Priya Sisters, were their students."

It is most unfortunate that the duo's contributions have been totally forgotten. I have heard them only via recordings and some of their renditions are magical - ninnuvina namadendu (in navarasa kannada, ksheera saagara shayana in devagandhari) to name a few.

I hope that they get the recognition they so richly deserve.

The duo were very regular in the concert circuit during the 60s and 70s. I believe they are the disciples of T R Balasubramaniam, a senior student of GNB. (Unfortunately TRB passed away at an young age.) Jayalakshmi was also a popular cine play back.

Their alltime great rendition is Ganamurthe. I got attracted to this song through their singing and i find myself making that as a bench mark while listening to other presenting the same song. one more observation is unlike other duos thier voice mix is different. i do not know if it is my imagination but there is a very fine gap between the two voices as if one voice is following the other (like that of a violinist folliwing the vocalist) and this added to the overall listening experience.

Venkatakailasam. I am again uploading the songs for you. I have uploaded one virutham also sung most beautifully in five ragams-Bilahari, Subhapanthuvarali, Manirang etc. The following are the links.

Ninne namminanu- http://www.sendspace.com/file/jj0u80

Krishnachandra radha- http://www.sendspace.com/file/w696lv

Virutham- http://www.sendspace.com/file/frein6

Reg the song Varavendum mentioned by you. I have heard lot of their concerts and have got bulk of the recordings. I do not think they have sung this song. They have sung two similar sounding songs-
Varuvaai varuvaai varuvaai Kannaa- Thodi composed by Bharathiar And
Vandarulvai Muruga- Devamanohari, composition of Papanasam Sivan

Mahavishnu- I have recently downloaded one of RJ concert accompanied by your grandfather Sri Kalpathi Ramanathan from Sangeethapriya- Mr Manjunath or HMG Murthy folder. You may like to have it. But there is no thani.

CRama, I played the Harikambhoji "Rama nannu brOvara" from the downloaded album to my mother (daughter of Sri Kalpathi Ramanathan) and it brought tears to her eyes. I cannot thank you enough for bringing this recording to my attention. There are so few recordings of my grandfather surviving today (despite him having performed in the AIR for three decades).

Radha Jayalakshmi Carnatic music vocalist duo as well as playback singers in films in 1940s and 1950s, before they became music teachers…
They are not own sisters…They are blood cousin sisters…
Radha and Jayalakshmi were from G. N. Balasubramaniam school, where they learned classical vocal music from the noted vocalist and teacher…
Radha And Jayalakshmi started learning with TR Balu who died very young in 1957 or so.
They then learnt from Shri GNB..
The duo was awarded the 1981 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Carnatic Music – Vocal…

Shanmukhapriya and Haripriya, popularly known as the Priya Sisters, were their students…..

A qouote from Shri K Srikanth at ‘parvathi’…
“During 60s and 70s , R-J were a much sought after performing duo. They were always crowd pullers, and invariably their concert used to be a grand success.
Their planning of a 3-hr concert was always excellent. R-J had created aunique niche for themselves in the Carnatic Music World with their inimitable, precise, clear rendition of kritis, comprehensive Raga presentation, creative Swaras, and Devotional Devaranamas with great mass appeal.”

Once Mysore T Chowdiah called them “GNB in sarees”…

It is unfortunate that the music lovers and sabhas have totally ingored their contribution to carnatic music. Till 1990s they were active in their field and their concerts were much loved by music lovers…

There are some 59 songs of them at my blog here…
