Padma VeerarAghavan

Post by rajeshnat »

I did not know that smt padma veeraraghavan passed away recently .I am particularly interested in hearing the krithis that she has composed on Lord Oppiliappan. Some time before gamakam wrote a review in his blog when Smt GV sang those numbers

I too attended that concert. The compositions were very good and had a lot of poetic values. They were not the usual gathi nee ayyA,arul vAi ayya stuff.Gv talked very high of her as to how a prolific composer she was.She used to compose chitta svarams and selection ragas for ragamalikas just used to flow in.

It is indeed a great loss of the carnatic music community as well as the Srivaishnava Community. I was fortunate to have known Padma Teacher well since both my grandmother and mother learnt from her. She learnt carnatic music from Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar and K V Narayanaswami. Her father was the Oppiliappan Koil priest prior to 1970. He was a family friend in my mother side during my grandfather's Kumbakonam and Mannargudi Days. Here brother is Dr V Sadagopan, an IBM scientist, Srivaishnava and Carnatic Music Scholar from Scarborough, NY. He runs websites like sundarsimham.org, hayagrivan.org, ahobilavalli.org and publishes e-books on SrIvaishnavam. He has also authored a meanings book on thyAgarAjasvAmi's ghanarAga pancharatnam with a forward by Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer.

The blog review is http://carnaticmusicreview.wordpress.co ... dmanandam/
# Can anyone upload few songs of Smt Padma veerarAghavan(only if it is not copyrighted) or suggest me a link in sangeethapriyA.

# Also can anyone write more about this vidushi, though I am speculating that she truly lived for the art and seeked divinity within that.

Dear Friends, It is very sad that we lost a musician, teacher, painter, vainika and composer like Smt.padma Veeraraghavan. I was very fortunate to spend most of my post school hours almost every day with Padma Mami. You can say that I grew up in her house and was very lucky to see a lady of her caliber juggle school(She was a teacher in PSBB schools, Mrs. YGP said that she needed 10 teachers to handle all the work that Padma mami did after she quit the job!) her home and her music. She was such a willing learner and one had to see how she submitted herself before her gurus to believe it.

As a composer of music , she was unbelievable, we students would just rattle out ragas and she would set any set of poems to music. She was a prolific composer.

She was our teacher friend and mother alternating.. I used to go with her to Oppiliappan Koil on my summer vacations and she used to take us students to farms just to show us how a vetalai kodi looked since one of us had'nt seen it!!

However the highlight of her personality was that I have never never heard her say anything negative. She was always full of love and positivity, in fact anybody would have managed to fall in love with and learn some amount of music from her, due to her persistence and encouragement.

Her student Prakash who plays the Mandolin has promised to upload some of her songs, in fact a website with her works is to be launched on Nov 5th which happens to be mami's birthday. We will put up details about the site here.

We thank all for your condolences and pray that Mami's blessings is showered on one and all.

regards
