Very nice to see the picture of Parassala Ponnammal (the Golden girl) in about her 30's. She was accidentally rediscovered only after she performed at Chennai and took the CM circles by storm. How true it is that we discover talent only through publicity! Hats off to the pioneering efforts of KSM for finding and promoting the CM pearls of Bombay in whose lusture we bask even today. The rediscovery got for Ponnammal a slot to perform at Cleveland and she is now a minion of millions over the globe and her Shishya Nandini displayed the talents she assimilated from her guru in the recent Carnatic Idol program with raving support from our membership. It all goes to show how important 'Rasika Recognition' is for the discovery of CM Gems lost through neglect in the ravages of time. Now that we have this forum let us not make the same mistake again!

Thanks ashasiva!
We need such gems to be posted and better to have the artistes participate at the forum to hear firsthand their experiences to document the history of CM and also to pay our homage to these forgotten artistes. Better late than never!

Ramasubramanian M.K wrote: The problem in the Fifties --artistes who came of age and started knocking on doors--was that there were too few institutions and the older crop of male/Female artistes were dominating the scene, there was no Corporate or State Patronage, not enough 'pesky" reviewers(with all modesty there very few "pushy" reviewers like my father the late K.S.Mahadevan--who wrote for Indian Express Chennai) who could use their "pulls" with Sabhas organisers--my father during the Eighties,Nineties and early 2000, was shameless and relentless in "plugging" upcoming artistes who found it difficult to get traction in the elitist ,cloistered Institutions especially in Chennai ---the Ranjani Gayathris, the Gayathri Venkataraghavans, the Amritha Venkatesh--all of them lacked the 'pull" with the Chennai Institutions despite their talent and my late father was tenacious in seeking opportunities- for these artistes and today they are all enjoying immense popularity and RICHLY DESERVED--In the Mid Nineties,he got Ranjani-Gayathri--at that time they were a Violin Duo--to play in my father's 80th birthday in Chennai where all the leading sabha organisers attended and were mighty impressed with the newest Bombay Imports!!! He even got the late Subbudu to attend one of their recitals in Chennai during the December season and write a glowing review and the rest is History.
MKR Sir,
Your father is truly a great man. I see lot of references of accomplished and elderly statesman promoting and bringing in gems like RG sisters, GV's and Amrutha Venkatesh. On a side note , atleast having looked for the past 10 years closely in chennai , I dont see that kind of promotion happening that well for male singers. This observation is fairly omnipresent in the 25 + sabha patrons and organizers.

To an extent there is a bias or perhaps put it in a better way a "subconscious pushing tendency for female artists" is indeed there - but of course they deserve that as there is a bias against them in general by supporting artists . Kind of one for and one against. As I write i think a lot of 30 - age group male musicians falling under the crack without a statesman like KS Mahadevan supporting them.

Any thoughts on that Sir?

Vidwan MA Narasimhachar was a very famous musician in Karnatka. I have heard his concerts in eightees in Bangalore- live and radio concerts. He was a highly rated musician in Karnataka in the same league of R.K.Srikantan . But he did not become famous outside his native State.

Thanks for mentioning the correct name. When I searched for 'Sri Narasimhachariar' I could not get any lead.

Here is a tribute to Sri M.A. Narasimhachar, who passed away on July 7, 2004 at Bangalore, at the age of 83. http://www.kutcheribuzz.com/news/20040806/narasimha.asp

I understand that his full name is: Sri Mandayam Annadorai Narasimhachar.

M.A. Narasimhachar was a Sangeethabhushanam from Annamalai University; second batch. He has taught innumerable students in Mysore and was known to be an excellent instructor.

He has given special programmes on AIR on the songs of Anai-ayya, Veena kuppayyar etc. and lecdemo-s like an all-Ahiri concert at gAyana samAja, Bangalore.

His two daughters live in Bangalore and have inherited his massive repertory.

Having spent his childhood in Melkote, he had learnt several older songs prevalent there among the Arayars, in
cluding some of the vAnamAmalai compositions.

"D. Vasudevan (1930) is the younger brother of late D. Krishnamurthy. In those days, both the brothers were called ‘Salem Brothers’. They owe to their father, Duraisamy Iyer for their career in music world. Their father was very much interested in drama. So he sent his children, Vasudevan and Krishnamurthy to Madurai Bala Vinodha Sangeetha Sabha run by Nawab Rajamanickkam Pillai to learn vocal Carnatic music. When Rajaji happened to visit their concert, he noticed them uneducated and made arrangements for them to get primary education. Vasudevan’s family came to Salem along with the drama troupe. Here he and his brother began to learn Carnatic vocal music soon. They became famous Carnatic singers and were treated equally with the famous singers like Chellam Iyengar and Desigan. Vasudevan worked in the Modern Theatres music troupe also.
After the demise of his brother Krishnamurthy in 1972, Vasudevan started to perform solo concerts. He had performed many concerts for All India Radio programmes. In 1989, he was honoured with the title ‘Isai Ayana Mani’."

T.P.S. Selvarathinam is the son of Thiruvenkadu Subramania Pillai, nadaswara vidhvan. Selvarathinam learnt vocal music under Madurai Mani Iyer. http://www.hindu.com/2010/12/15/stories ... 490400.htm

SP Ramu and SP Sarada were famous in seventees. They had cut some gramaphone records as well. The old Ceylon Radio used to broadcast their songs. I had heard some radio concerts over AIR Madras also. Subsequently they had gone into oblivion.

Both Sri T.P.Kailasam and Sri.S.Janakiraman were well known musicians and well respected teachers in Kumbakonam during 70s and 80s. They were AIR Trichi grade A artists then.I have couple of friends and classmates(in school) who learnt from them and later on became AIR graded artists themselves.

Janakiraman mama was our neighbor for about a decade. He currently lives in Chennai(I think) and was honored by PSN Disciples Foundation this year.

T.S. Vembu Iyer, father of T.V.Sankaranarayanan, is the brother-in-law of Madurai Mani Iyer.

Extracts from (http://www.archive.org/stream/anotherga ... p_djvu.txt):-

T.S. VEMBU AYYAR - VOCALIST: (b. April 21, 1916)

Place of birth :
Tiruvalangadu, Tanjore district. The village has a good musical past.

Parents ;
Sankaranarayana Vajpeyar & Nagalakshmi Ammal.

Musical training under :
Tiruvalangadu Sundaresa Ayyar, an eminent violinist,
Umayalpuram Swaminatha Ayyar, a Sangita Kalanidhi,
Turaiyur Rajagopala Sarma and
Madurai Mani Ayyar, a Sangita Kalanidhi (1939 onwards).

Debut :
April 1945 at Mayavaram with his guru Sundaresa Ayyar on violin and Kuttalam Sivavadivel Pillai on mridangam.

From 1940 to 1969, he was providing voice support to his guru and relative, Madurai Mani Ayyar and later was giving concerts on the All India Radio and sabhas. Since 1986, he has stopped giving concerts. T.V. Sankaranarayanan, the popular vocalist now, is his son. Vembu Ayyar is literally a link between Mani Ayyar, the colossus and Sankaranarayanan, the maestro-in-the-making.
