Thanks...This one time, I have to confess that I was not angling for more, but I have never said no to your offerings! Lji, who is the composer of this song? Rarely heard these days!

DRS/CML/Arasi,
Isn't this the inspiration for the MLV number in pArthibhan kanavu (with Kamala's delectable dancing) - andi mayangudaDi ASai perugudaDi, kandan vara kANEnE?

My childhood memory of Karaikkudi Sambasivaiyer--perhaps the first vINA vidwan I had heard--holding a beautiful vINA, making sweet sounds. Wearing a red and white checked folded top cloth over a shoulder. He spoke sweetly too, when I met him off stage. Children always remember those who take time to converse with them in a kind manner, however fleeting the meeting!

Lji,
It is a movie song available in MIO...

Arasi,
You do have the correct song:
My favorite part of the song is:
'dAgattAl nA(vu) varaNDAl taNNIRAl taNiyumaDi
idayam varaNDu viTTAl yedai konDU taNNippadaDI?
kaLLa chirippAlE kannattai kiLLi viTTu
aLLi aNaittiDavE avar vara kANEnE ...(andi mayanduaDI)

My question was if it was based on the kalyANI track that Kji posted (nalla vELai arindu by Turaiyur).

DRS, your ears are certainly better than mine, but I have always heard kalyANI. What rAga do you identify it as, or is it a 'miSra' rAga?

71. Ramnad Krishnan
A Name that throws up a small list of songs available on Record. Each of them a Beauty.Aptly called a Musician's Musician , his renderings seem to acquire a special sheen , brought about by an unhurried pace.

Here is a bunch of tracks -salvaged again from an old forgotten spool-.
Company is equally sedate and mesmerising -Lalgudi and Karikudi Mani- and I lost count of the number of times Wahs! and Bhesh's ! Travelled between them .
This is a very very personal Experience.
(Pity that the Amma Ravamma track gets truncated a few minutes before the ending)
Have a nice Sunday.Mine will run on the power of these three tracks.

Kooniyur Vaidyanatha Ayyar and Brhannayaki were parents of a rich crop of talented artistes including Lakshminarayanan - violinist
Meena,
Is this V. Lakshminarayanan, the father of Vaidyanathan, Subramanian and Shankar?

I believe L.Vaidyanathan/L.Shankar/L.Subramaniam's father is L. Lakshminarayanan. They are from Palakkad in Kerala.
"Born in an enviable environment of music as son of Prof.L.Lakshminarayanan (1911-1990) and Seethalakshmi, he had his training in theoretical and practical music with his father, whom L.Subramaniam describes as 'a torch-bearer in introducing fabulous, masterful, original, new techniques in playing the violin and as one who introduced innovative concepts in the art'. The L tio's father is V. Lakshminarayana (not L. Lakshminarayana)..and I was wondering if he was Ramnad Krishnan's brother given the fact that Sri Ramanad Krishnan's dad was Vaidyanatha Ayyar (from the article Meena posted) and the family hailed from Alapuzha in Kerala.

Jayaram, The information on that site is inaccurate. As Rshankar correctly observed, the father of the L. trio was V.Lakshminarayana.
This is from L. Subramaniam's official website: http://www.indianviolin.com/family/father.htm

And yes, they are from the same family as Ramnad Krishnan. They have lived in many places (after Ramanathapuram) and most notably spent a lot of time in Sri Lanka, which is why they did not go with the Ramnad moniker like Ramnad Krishnan and Raghavan.

There are illustrious descendants of that family on this forum. Maybe they could clarify ....

72. S. Balachander

http://www.badongo.com/file/2239460

Kindly confirm if this RTP is in Vakulabharanam .
It was wrongly labelled as jayanthasena when it reached me.
I cant help hearing strains of Chittor Subr Pillay singing
E Ramuni - .
So that is what made me think of vakulabharanam

A mind boggling track.

Will folow it with a breathtaking Ragamalika , later.

Kji,
One vivid recollection I have of this vaiNIka was the program/series he did for Madras DD (forget the name - but was along the lines of Prof Sudharani Raghupathy's bharatam series) - he and his son demystified music for the 'lay person' - a very lovely series..The episode that sticks in my memory is one where several instrumentalists were interviewed, and at the very end, all of them were asked how much their instruments cost: when it came to the flautist's turn, he quoted a price in line with what the others had said (VERY high for a bamboo flute) - in the very next scene, they show S. Balachander quipping to his son that it would have to be lord SrI kriSNa's flute to cost that much!

That figures! A teenager while he worked at the AIR! I used to think he was much older--of course, I was a child and thought that the world was mainly inhabited by adults. Rasika Ranjani Sabha then had a gallery (or benches) outside--by the stage entrance. In one of the concerts, I got bored and drifted out. Outside, in a pale blue shirt and gold rimmed glasses, sat Balachandar. He asked me to come sit by him and listen to the concert. Forget who was singing! I knew him, as I did many others in the art world. Again, one of the artistes who respected children and didn't talk down to them but conversed with them as equals. I had heard that he was a chess champion too, besides playing several instuments. No wonder, I was happy to be invited to sit by him, such a talented person!
