I am saddened to read about Geetha's health problems. I did know about her breast cancer from which she had recovered completely, but not about further complications that followed. Her father Dr.S. Ramanathan and I were friends during his days at Wesleyan in mid 1960s, when I was with the University of Illinois. In fact the Music Department and the India students' Association, of which I was the president at the time, had arranged for a short course in Carnatic Music by him and couple of kutcheris in the campus in 1964 (65?).
I had the pleasure of meeting Geetha & Frank several times whenever she visited upstate New York. A few years ago when I was in Chennai for the December season I did attend a few of her programs. She was courteous enough to send me an email to inform me that she would be playing my favorite "nadachi nadachi" in the Academy's morning session. I had enjoyed her presentation along with Frank, though she had a severe throat problem and could not vocalize her music as she always would. I also remember attending her presentation of Thyagaraja's Utsava sampradAya krithis in Cleveland Aradhana in 2000 (?)
I have not been in touch with her since our move to Florida. Will soon renew our contacts. I wish to convey to her though these columns my best wishes for her health as well as to her worthy project in memory of her father, which we all will look forward to.
Many may not know that she is also the author of several short stories in Tamil magazines.
