In this forum we use audio clips to understand the topic of discussion. Next time round feel free to discuss music rather than just asking for clips.

I have emailed you on this very point! I apologise if my asking for clips, even the one odd time, is not in keeping with the goals of this forum!

Just viewed about Dr. S. Ramanathan. Truly, he was such a simple man and a great artist. He used to be so encouraging and appreciative. I still remember as a boy I had accompanied my father in one of the radio main concerts(in those days radio concerts were given the utmost importance) . He came all the way from triplicane by bus to our home that he was very impressed by my mridangam and reminded him of my guru maestro palghat mani iyer. So great and pure was his heart. In another concert of my father on the occasion of Mayuram Viswanatha Iyer's jayanthi, He sat till the end and during todi in the midst of Karthikeya kangeya he stood up and publically with emotion came out in the stage and spoke that he was moved with tears and rarely had he come across such a karthikeya. An artist wholeheartedly appreciating another artist. Most people may not be knowing the fact that he was a veena vidwan and an expert veena teacher initially. My mother had learnt from in those days. He was a genius with a humble heart. He used to be like a saint in the later days.

manakkalsriram - very true indeed - I echo similar sentiments. My mom was also his student. He was the judge when I went for the Central Govt Scholarship test and was so encouraging and explained the importance of practicing "thattu varisais" in akaaram and in different ragas every morning. I had to name a different guru on the paper because the Govt would not give you scholarship money if you learn from your mom/dad ;) Dr. SR sir told me "Why do you want a different guru when you have a wealth of knowledge and an excellent guru in your own mom".

A very pleasing and humble human being indeed.

Couple of months ago, I spent a fine afternoon with MV Ramana - at his office-, along with GB Rajashekhar and other friends ,in Bangalore.
It was close on the heels of the symposium at Narada Gana Sabha and he was bubbling with so many ideas / thoughts.
Such a fine article, this one.
Worthy of a Musician Scholar...

Coolkarni - MV Ramana is a good friend of mine from US/Canada days. He does have refreshing/original points of view on musical (and other) topics. Perhaps you can ask him to contribute to our discussions here some time!

there are a few pieces on the sangeethapriya website that are precious. in particular, brochevarevare in sriranjani. the sriranjani alapana is simply some of the best singing i've ever heard. i was listening to it on the drive home from work today. total tear jerker. the aesthetics of his music were so traditional and so pure.

He was equally good at music theory also. Not only he was knowledgeable, but he was ready and able to convey things thro lec dems.Anybody having such lec dems,pl post it here, they worth so much.I don?t know anybody used to record the lec dems at music academy or any other sabhas during the season, personal recordings,if not the sabha people themselves.
This is a music site,so there has to be audio files, unfortunately due to copyright issues,it is very much restricted.
Soumya,Unnikrishnan(who later learnt under Savithri Sathymurthy, who was also a student of Ramanathan)
Apart from a scholarly musician,he was a gem of a man,utterly humble,like a true saint.
Dressed in whites(which goes with his gray hair, beard and mustache!) he used to sit straight when singing, with his ever pleasant and calm face.
I have attended probably 10 of his concerts(plus some lec dems, one was on kaavadi chintu)from 1980 to 87. I can share something more about this man; he was invited to sing for a sabha near my native place, and the financial position of that sabha was so pathetic, that they were unable to pay him(not sure if they paid him at least the train fare! ) he wasn?t angry, but told them to arrange his concert whenever they face financial problems!
I am happy to inform Rasikas that I am organising a REMEMBERANCE DAY CELEBRATION FOR S.Ramanathan at Swamy's Hall R.K.Mutt RD on 10th DECEMBER 2009 5:30-8:30 P.M. In the next post I am providing DETAILS of the Occasion. Saraswathi Vaggeyakara Trust is a co-orgsaniser& Shanmugapriya is the Sponsor. VKV

Varsha, you never cease to amaze me with your collection of these vintage pictures.
I take it that this was from S Ramanathan's sojourn in the US (Wesleyan & Cal Arts?) from the early 70s. It is hard to recognize him without his trademark beard!

Thanks also for the recording...
