Thank you Rajesh for posting this. The musical connections of tiruvaiyAru, Bangalore Nagaratnamma, Mysore, and even the non-existent 'village' Bidaram, a Krishnappa who was trained by Karur Ramaswamy--all these tell us that CM did not grow in pockets of hamlets and cities and stayed right there. There was (and still is) quite a bit of exchange and comeraderie in CM, whichever geographical region the musicians hail from. Good music cannot but attract patrons and rasikAs from all over.
Look in the other thread (harassment). Nick refers to 'our' vina!
CM, by its merits would keep drawing rasikAs from everywhere, however much parochial some may want it to be...

The second major performer for whom Palghat Mani Iyer played, after he started playing for Chembai, is for Bidaram Krishnappa. The third major vidwan was Gottuvadyam Narayana Iyengar (Ravikiran's grandfather). These three concerts happened at the Music Academy just after it was started.

Thanks for this nice article. The oil painting of Sri Rama Pattabisheka is very attractive. The article also highlights the amount of commitment Shri Bidaram Krishnappa had to build this famous Mandira in Mysore.

Mr. Girish
An excellent pick!
Krishnappa was a great Bhakta. The Sri Sitarama Mandira (Hall) that he established is a symbol of his Bhakti. I know a bit about the hard efforts that he put in to build it – the places he roamed to and the people he sought help from.
I had been asked to write about this Ramamandira. My research resulted in the article in Lalitha Kala Tarangini. You can read it here in their magazine: pages.. 20-24, April 2015 issue

Varsha avare,
I doubt if that is Bidaram's music (Paratpara raghuvara) that you have shared in the mediafire file above.

I would even venture to say that is Sri Vasudevachar singing his own composition.
I wonder who is the other vocalist accompanying!
BTW, I have not heard this recording before. What a delightful discovery!

The recording you have shared is significantly different in style from the recordings available (of Sri Bidaram) such as the one below (granted it is from 1910). Even if the paratpara recording is from the year 1931 when he passed away, it sounds significantly different, the recording quality, the accompaniment style etc... all these factors make me say that I doubt it is Bidaram.

From what I have heard, his music was more like "company drama music" which is what the below recording sounds like.

I could be wrong but I hope we can confirm what is stated, either way!

Also, I have more material I want to add to this thread and I will do that this weekend.

Regards,

Sreeni

Bidaram's largeheartedness (visAla hrdayatana) has been well documented.

I have previously written about an episode wherein Sri Bidaram helped my Grandfather Bhairavi Lakshminaranappa to secure an extension of leave from the Mysore Palace authorities in the year 1922 to continue his highly successful performance tour of Madras
(Ref: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=14639)

A brief extract of that story here:

I am showing here a picture of that letter (dated Nov 29th, 1922) Sri Bidaram had written to my Grandfather!

śrīrāmāñjanēya namaḥ

kṣēma

śrīlakṣmīnāraṇappājanavara si ge b. kṛṣṇapparu māḍuva vijñāpanegaḷu.
ādi u. ku. sā

The last three characters stand for
ubhaya kuśalōpari sāmprata meaning "auspicious wishes for mutual welfare" equivalent of sahanāvavatu.

What an interesting relic, Sreeni! Thank you!

I feel Vid. Krishnappa missed a great career as a doctor, given his handwriting!

Sachi avare,

You have very well captured the top section of the letter that I have shown!

Yes! It is a fascinating piece from an impressive collection that my Father had carefully preserved. Sri Bidaram's handwriting is challenging to read but I could read about 75% of the two page letter!
He has generously praised Lakshminaranappa for his success in Madras, about which he has heard from his friends in Madras, Sri Chinnaswamy Mudaliar and others, writes about how he has impressed upon the Bhakshi of the Palace to renew the leave for a Third time, making a case that Lakshiminaranappa is bringing fame to Mysore and the patron king. He concludes the letter by giving an update about Sri Sheshanna and other vidwans' health and extending his best wishes to Lakshiminaranappa!

Bidaram, a charitable man, indeed!
