Respected Rasikas,

For all die hard fans of Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari, we feature her in her 1964 Gowri-Ganesha festival performance at "Parvathi", Mysuru. With the impending week of 'Vidyarambham', Saraswati Puja and Vijaya Dashami we thought in a remembrance of her old songs and of the very great personality that she was.

Please enjoy our new posting at http://chowdaiahandparvati.blogspot.com/.

cpblog,
Your Parvati concerts are a pleasure to listen to. This navarAtri is special in that you bring to us the culture of Parvati--horticulture too! The stories you tell are reflective of the true ambience of the place. However great the music, if the surroundings, the hospitality of the hosts and the listening fervor in the audience is not there, the magic of music is not realized fully.. Of course, the rasikA minds also need to have an ambience within to relish the music without a sense of the self--at least in those moments of bliss.
Once again, thanks. Now to the music of the great MLV!
---------
What a concert! A detailed AndOlika, and that kharaharapriya.
Thanks again for the nAvaratri special, though the concert was a gowri-ganEsa special. The pallavi line was chosen by her for the occasion!

Absolutely incredible Kharaharapriya! Thought I caught a quick sruti-bheda beginning at ~ 32:51 as MLV gushes in and out, back to Kharaharapriya. Couldn't identify the raga though with my limited capabilities!

Awesome that I would bump into this post after reading about her guru GNB's penchant for envisioning gopucha yati kalpanaswaras. Because in a commercial release with the Revathi RTP, MLV sings a lovely Kharaharapriya follwed by P Sivan's "Srinivasa" and sings her own gopucha yati kalpanaswaram at breakneck speed!

She's started the Tanam as I type, so will go and listen in silence...

Dear Sri Anandmurty,

Thank you, sir. This concert is very special to the "Parvathi" family and also we got a great feedback after posting it.

You will appreciate that the ravages of time had rendered the recording from 1964 somewhat incomplete, but the music is so great that we just wanted to share it.

You're right that MLV thinks of doing grahabheda at that point. But being a very spontaneous artiste, she moves on with the main raga.

Kharaharapriya lends itself to grahabheda very well. Ri- Todi, Ga- Kalyani, Ma- Harikhambhoji, Pa- Natabhairavi and Ni-Shankarabharana. Where MLV pauses, she could have branched off into Kalyani.

On the net, among various articles about this great singer, we found this:

"She had the natural flair for rendering ragams. She would handle ragams like Kalyani, Todi, Bhairavi, Kharaharapriya, Latangi, Harikambodi, Kambodi, Keeravani, Purvikalyani, Shanmukhapriya, Shankarabharanam, Madhyamavati, Shuddasaveri effortlessly and render them with full of raga bhavam. She was adept in grahabhedam or modal shift. She used to glide through easily from the main ragam to the derived ragam. Unless, a musician had strong grasp of the basics and was quick thinker, it is difficult to do grahabhedam in a concert setting. In a lec-dem situation, grahabhedam can be handled at leisure."

Wishing you many more musical delights during this auspicious season.

Dear Rasikas,

From your thrilling weekend with World Cricket, we wish to draw you unto the thrilling world of Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari via this spectacular concert that she gave at "Parvathi", Mysore on April 8, 1971, coinciding with her felicitation for the Sangeetha Natak Academy Award. It was incidentally, the Navami celebrations of Lord Sri Rama, too.

Next to MLV is her husband Vikatam Krishnamurthy--a wonderful Mimic--once during a music festival in Bombay in the 50's at Shanmukhanada sabha he gave a 90 minute 'stand-up comedy routine--imitating Rajaji,Kamaraj et al and had the audience in stitches. The gentleman on the right looks familiar to me but cannot recall now.

Mama was 86 and Mami was 72--what radiance and "lakshmeekaram' in both their faces..
MLV died in 1990@ 62-just 2 years after this photo--the last year before her death, despite the acute suffering she went thro, she was very stoic about it.

A classy artiste--awesome talent but humble to the core,an elder sister to her disciples, treated the accompaniments with great respect and generosity. MLV loved my Mom's vattal Kuzhambu whenever she visited Bombay.

An embarrassing anecdote in my next post!!

Respected Rasikas,

We had an old recording from "Parvathi", Mysore of Dr. M.L.V.'s concert in 1972.
It was such a beautiful concert that in-spite of small audio irritations here and there we really wanted all of you to hear
the wide elaborations that she goes through, here, in her "Bhajans, Dasa compositions and Ragamalikas".

As usual she has a fine team to accompany her in Smt Prabhavathi, Sri Subrahmanyam,Sri Krishnamurthy Rao and Sri H.P.Ramachar.

Thanking you as always in your kindness,

Dear Cpblog team

In the recently uploaded MLV concert with gamanashramA RTP - the kalyANi and bhairavi suites are from the previous Parvathi Concert in 1971 where she has sung a RTP in Bhairavi. The 1971 concert has Ghatam accompaniment which is clear in the neraval of the kalyani piece. This concert with kanjira as upa pakkavadyam clearly gives this away.

Please remove the two pieces from the upload of the new concert.

Thanks for the wonderful music, as always.

The tamizh version. Aditya are you sure it is P. Leela in the telugu version. I think the youtube link is correct in that the other singer is Soolamangalam Smt. Rajalaksjmi (one of the Soolamangalam Sisters)...

* Grapevine would have had it- I will not be surprised if one of her foremost disciples is chosen for a coveted award this year! :-o

Subha Ganesan has sent the invitation through our FB Group MLV..of which she a member..

IT IS NOT INDIVIDUALS whom I referred .... It is the obligations of a forum meant for betterment of Carnatic music that has failed to honor a great artist

on her birth anniversary.....the inherent apathy... which was regretted..

arasi...husbands standing in the way of recognition of merit of their spouses, shows the flaws in the system of selection...

True. And hope music has its own merit, no matter the gender or one's relationship to a previous awardee. Charumathi was so good in Cleveland and I like her style.

Satyabalu's post about the grape vine made me say it. It's July, and about time speculations gather steam about the SK award. Sudha's name was bandied about even last year, and that's what I was hinting at...

My unequivocal vote would be for Ravi Kiran--no need to wait till he reaches 60 plus!!e should acknowledge artistes who genuinely enhance the knowledge and understanding of the rasika base, without being condescending.

I feel observing him, over the years- especially during the Music Season--be it the Academy or the Sampradaya forums -he is very smart not cocky, not obsequiously humble and yet amiable and nice to converse with.

As usual my post has nothing to with MLV but I cannot help it if I have imbibed the Mudicondan trait sans the Vidwath!!!
