Congratulations, Aruna Sairam! I have heard her sing a beautiful Shiva pantuvarali ( That's what it says on it- sounds like Subha Pantuvarali to me ) alapana and Sri Sathyanarayanam on the You Tube. I don't know how long the alapana was, but it was long- not boring at all. Very beautifully sung by her.

I understand that recently there was a symposium of carnatic and hindustani music where Aruna Sairam, Ajoy Chakravarthy, TN Krishnan, TN Rajam, Mannargudi Easwaran and a famous tabla player participated which was conducted in conjunction with Chembur fine arts....did any one attend and is there any report on this ? Grateful for reports....Sam

Rajeshnat:While I do not begrudge the recognition for Aruna( heaven knows HOW Hard she has worked for the last 50 odd years) but as in the Hindu write-up as well as others I have seen about her, I find seldom acknowledgement of her Father Mr. Sethuraman's immense contribution to her growth and development.

As I have mentioned in this forum(under Aruna Sairam),Mr.Sethuraman was steadfast in his belief in tradition, purity and was primarily responsible for hosting the Dhanammal family,Ramnad krishnan,Tanjore Sankara Iyer(the latter being the biggest beneficiary of Mr.Sethuraman's generosity when almost 60 years ago he landed in Bombay as a young man, disturbed by lack of support in Chennai for his talents). Aruna's mother died young and since her demise Mr.Sethuraman was unflinching in his support and equally encouraged his daughter-in-law Geetha Raja(who was also immensely talented) and put her under Brindama's tutlelage.

My own knowledge of the families of Aruna,Bombay Sisters and Ranjani Gayathri-(-all Mumbaikars!! I might add!!) and the heaps of praise laid on all of them in the media leads me to believe that the role of the parents(especially the fathers) has not been adequately acknowledged. Each one of them put their own careers in the backburners.
Ofcourse it is not the fault of the media -- Maybe the artists themselves do not feel their gratitude needs to be publicly flaunted lest it be looked upon as a platitude!!!

None of the above should detract from my admiration for Aruna's devotion and tenacity towards Music and her constant urge to explore new vistas and "engage" audiences--both cognoscentis and rasikas alike!!!

The Award is richly deserved.

MKR Sir,
Aruna's mother was a musical teacher , I am not sure if her Dad Mr Sethuraman acted as a music teacher to Smt arunA . Certainly he may have been a nice person in terms of hosting vidwans (the kind of anthakAlathhu tanjore hospitality). Hence not much acknowledgement. RG Sisters have generally well acknowledged about the role of their dad MR Balasubramaniam(?n). Any way you can pass the feedback to Smt arunA sairam ,and I am sure smt sairam will genuinely see your viewpoint.

Roughly a year back I did see a TV program where in Aruna's husband was interviewed along with Smt Geetha raja, Shri Sairam has also contributed a lot for Aruna's success. Personally more than all the support I some how feel smt arunA sairam is very astute, her distinct KBS strong voice and being a great communicator with flair for multiple languages has indeed got her great laurels. I see that kind of astuteness typically with these south indians who are raised in Bombay . On a side note not that I claim that I know her , she belongs to the same village as my purvangAm nallamAnkudi (nannilam taluk) which is near tiruvArur.

Flash forward nowadays I always see more and more big concert announcements of her upcoming concerts , 5 days to go , 1 day to go ,there is more flash than musical substance .Today she teamed up with shankar mahadevan and she performed in Narada gana sabhA. Shankar Mahadevan and Aruna Sairam I cannot comprehend that combo, perhaps only mumbaikar like you (MKR Sir) can get this kind of music ;) .

On reading some biographical info about Aruna Sairam, I noted that she was trained by "A S Mani, disciple of Tiger Varadachariar" in Kalpana Swara rendition.

Can anyone say more about A S Mani? I am trying to trace his descendants.

This is from Facebook:

"Aruna Sairam
Dear Friends,

Greetings of the season.

Hope you are gearing up for the Chennai December Music Season 2013.

I regret to inform you that I will be unable to perform at this season's concerts due to matters concerning my family that currently need my attention. I look forward to joining you all again, and creating more music in a few months.

On the positive side, I would like to share with you some good news. The Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, has conferred on me their Award or Puraskar for the year 2013. This award is recognized as the highest national honor conferred on practicing artists, gurus and scholars. The Akademi honors are conferred by a general council of specialists in different fields of performing arts and representatives from different States and Union territories. I am extremely grateful to be recognized by the general council of this esteemed institution. It provides great motivation to the awardee to expand their artistic expression and extend the boundaries of their field."

Thanks to musicgoal, am listening to Aruna Sairam's performance right now. started with vAchama gOcharamundani in aTana and vinanA asa koni with swaras@vinanA asa koni . If one were to go just by this (oru pAnai sORRukku oru sOru padam, and so on), she is indeed a consummate carnatic musician. I still recall a grand thOdi and Ahiri (ninnE namminAnu & etula kApaduvO) of hers @ KGS, circa 2000.

I did not know TRS mama has taught her pallavi , wish to hear one like that . All said and done , her impressive communication and a touch of sincerity which is non musical also interests me in her. Nice writeup congratulations on the prestigious award, congrats to vidushi aruna sairam .

Rajesh,
Very nice looking ensemble. What are those pink things in the foreground, though?

The program is called "en thAi nI anRO?" which made me think that she would have sung that song too. May be she did, and the reviewer did not mention it!

en thAi nI anRO? mInATchi, mannuyirtham innuyirE by Ambujam Krishna.

Aruna Sairam is a great communicator and she had JV and Karthik playing too.

An advice to Vidushi Aruna Sairam by my Octogenerian Guru Shri Moudhgalya.

Smt. Anuna Sairam.

Madam, As one who has been listening to Doyens
of Carnatic Music for seven decades now,
and as one who has witnessed the zenith and nadir
of many a Professional, I hasten to post this well-meaning
and time-tested advice.

I am in fact provoked to write to you
on reading a well-composed but eulogistic presentation
of your abilities and achievements by Roshne B
in The New Indian Express of 9th March.

True you have made a mark in the field of Carnatic Music.
But shuttling between cities and continents,
exerting yourself in multiple repertoires and
singing in 14 different languages, sorry to say Madam,
is a tall order and a bit too much.
And it shows in your voice.

Here is a true parallel.
Jesudoss made it big in a short duration.
His voice captivated everybody. He was much in demand.
He gave a concert many years back in Thyagaraja Vidwat Samajam,
Mylapore, near Madhava Perumal Koil.
He started well and carried the audience with him.
Midway, when elaborating Kalyani, his voice played truant.
Everybody in the audience felt his discomfiture.

Descending down the platform, he touched the feet of
Semmangudi who was present.
The Giant said to Jesudoss ."Wonderful Kutcheri.
But please do not exert your God-given Voice too much".
But the Harikatha Exponent, standing next to Semmangudi,
Mannargudi Sambasiva Bhagavathar, in typical Harkatha style said,
"Jesu, Pallu Ponal Sollu Pochu. Guard the gifted voice".

Madam, where is Jesudoss today?
Please do not exert your voice. Preserve it.
Don't go the Jesudoss way.
I wish you well.

For artists It is so important to develop an extremely articulate personality , that personality may or may not match the musical acumen. This vidushi Aruna Sairam either writes every 2 months or some article is written about her (next to TMK) in The Hindu (Check few above posts to see the frequency).

These kind of writeups gives 2 polarized feelings : Feeling 1- May be there is also a dance which can really mix so well with Music(I do remember our govindan sir told me in person that Balasaraswati Dance is much more than music, though personally I cannot see that viewpoint ). Feeling 2- The other feeling is this musician getting into more and more drama, dance and kind of becoming less and less in Music .

Aruna Sairam = Street smartness of growing up in Uttarangam Bombay + Astuteness in really going deep to her Purvangam village Nannilam near Tiruvarur

After April June Quota for Vidushi Aruna Sairam in The Hindu. Nice writeup , i never knew that there is training and exercise for even tongue. Good anecdotes with voice expert from germany. There is something that vidushi Aruna worked very hard in 80's and 90's that has yielded more share of rasikas ears.

Congratulations on Vidushi Aruna Sairam in getting the coveted sangeetha kalanidhi in 2018. Her voice is distinct and powerful and here is one lovely emote in darbAri KAnadA. I donot think if any other musician has sung this particular number emotive number.Especially in the line where there is a pause and when she begins arugiL irundum uRuvam theriyAl kannA.

If my memory is right I do know Aruna's native is nannilam near Thiruvarur or may be there was a teacher by name Thiruvarur Ramaswamy who tutored her in Mumbai

Here it is Karuthill niraiNdhai - darbAri KAnadA - Thiruvarur Ramaswamy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCwqQPzDvOE

Also I just recollected a writeup of hers and K balachandar that came once in the first friday review in the first page of The Hindu, I just googled to find that now . She is always articulate and keeps rasikas engaged in her contextual talk. For sure this year the lecdems will be moderated very well in academy. Here is K Balachandar-Aruna article in The Hindu 2004

Aruna Sairam has 3 great positives: 1. She has studied CM and even HM I think very well. 2. She has cultivated her voice into a very niche type of timbre and delivery. 3. She connects with her audience extremely well.

Some years ago, at Yaksha festival in Isha Foundation, her performance wowed the crowds so well I saw Jaggi Vasudev (no mean communicator himself) taking notes.

After april and june , write up on July 31st,2018 in The Hindu. Incidentally in yesterdays Friday Review in carnatic music this is the only write up . There was a brief mention about a vidushi getting vanimahal award. REst of the articles in the friday review were dance and other arts and new fashions .

While the theme of June was on germany voice expert , july theme was purely on Lord Krishna. All said lovely writeup, one has to give it to father and mother of vidushi Aruna . Aruna Sairam = (tradition of nannilam (tiruvarur)+ street smartness of mumbai )/2

Listen to the classic saundararAjam... I am not referring to the pathantaram -- good / bad or the voice modulation or the lack of it

sAhitya cannot, I repeat CANNOT be mutilated --especially if you are the callibre of SK now. People will look up to you and learn from you and your recordings

ambudhi garva .... is sung ambudhi sarva! (Not once but twice -- so her sahityam has it as sarva).. ABSOLUTELY WRONG

A little bit of effort on the net will give you the correct sahityam, atleast now that the SK is won, please put in the effort

Not all senior musicians were perfect in sticking to every word in the sAhitya or in their pronunciation.
Aruna Sairam generally pays attention to these aspects, I think.

When the first december paper supplement with all schedules was out in The Hindu coverage of Aruna sairam was very small. IIRC the writeup of Vikku Vinayakaram who earlier itself had a big writeup after he got Life achievement was again covered with big writeups. Then sanjay had a big writeup of his forthcoming tamil concert in academy that was also up. Aruna writeup was bit small even kalyani ganesan who had another award had a fairly big writeup . Going with history the SK awardees and the writeups in the HIndu , the splash was not that BIG for this year SK awardee .

But on Dec 13,2018 vidushi Aruna Sairam the SK designate has got a fairly good coverage in The Hindu with her coveted award.

yes she generally pays attention but has mis-spelt many words in many popular compositions.

one of such example is in madananga mohana

link: https://youtu.be/MIjlDklljFk
actual lyrics: https://karnatik.com/c2510.shtml

1.vraja vanitaiyar==>*nava* vanitaiyar
2.rAdhEya vairi jAyA sOdara ==> *raajaya* vairi *raja* sodhara
3.angu en mAmiyAr nAttanAr sholpaDi ==> angu oru mamiyar *mamnar* sholpadi

when own words are used instead of actual lyrics, it totally changes the composers ideology!!
