Just listened to Suryaprakash's inta sowkhya in kApi - it was excellent! The ragam was extraordinarily fluent, with ideas pouring out like a waterfall, and the neraval, especially in second speed, had some fine sequences sung in true thanam style. The kalpanaswaras were again very imaginative, with even patterns like MSN used in an aesthetic manner with long jArus. It was not only a melodious kApi, but it was an educative one as well, with rarer phrases pulled out of the raga's deeply hidden crevices.

The above link that gn.sn42 has given has all the schedules updated of the entire tour which I see is only now updated in the last few days. This weekend in Lanham,MD and Richmond,VA. BTW during the last week there were concerts in atlanta and birmingham(alabama). I was thinking atleast atlanta will have a review as there were lots of reviews in the past. Please post it in the kutcheri thread if anyone has attended.

BTW we were discussing about in another thread where artists having a static concert schedule web page where it is always outdated. I see now with google calendar getting integrated , it is now always updated. (I have seen atleast gayathri venkat and suryaprakash updating like that in their respective websites).

All artists who have a website , please do the same and keep the calendar of concert scheduled filled with always latest info.

Respected Rasikas,

The write up is really informative and useful. Could some of you upload the rare RTPs sung by Suryaprakash since the mentioned links are dead.

Thanks in advance.

yes indeed Rajesh; Suryaprakash was in top form. Even the Kanada aalaapana and swaras are superb and of course the handling of chandrakauns is outstanding with unheard of swaraprastharams. Thanks to him for permitting it to be shared...

Rajesh,
Just happened to see this.
One of the best I have heard of Surya. His kAnaDa is pondering here and it moves sweetly, clear as a bell (MaNi!). The mrudangam playing with the tAnam makes it even better. For a short pallavi, there was no hurry, and the chandrakauns part was very pleasing too.
Thanks Surya for sharing this with us ;)

Look at the last para of the review, that is quite a bold writing by the reviewer , as most of them feel the same.Incidentally to the best of my knowledge these kind of recommendation has not happened in the hindu(some one can point any url if there is this kind of recommendation before)

This is the clipping of RTP pallavi part of suryasri, the dwi madhyama panchama vajra rAga , created by luminary "Sunaadha Vinodhan Tanjore S kalyAnarAman". A Very emotive scale and it is a very fascinating and rare experience to hear it as pallavi, bit lost the few significant and critical minutes of this suryasri swara and other two ragamaliga swaras.

The download link is in http://pub.300.mg/yjUGmD

This concert is already reviewed in other thread http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=18341

I like the timbre in his voice especially when he starts the alapana. Very nice effort that shows his vidwath. I think he's very under-rated. Since I'm not in the Chennai music scene, I'm not sure why he doesn't get the opportunities he deserves (based on the music academy slots thread last year).

Suryaprakash gave an excellent concert in Cleveland Festival recently celebrating the MMI Centenary. His was the ONLY concert which attempted to explain & follow the Manodharmam of MMI using the MMI STYLE of rendering music. He succeeded amply in bringing back memories of a MMI performance with the able collaboration of Nagai Sriram(Violin) and Sri. Thanjavur Murugabhoopathy (Mridangam). Sri Murugabhoopathy evoked the memories of Late great C.S.Murugabhoopathy.The Sarasamadhana piece regenerated the EXCITEMENT of a MMI Rendering & the R.T.P. "Gandhi Mahan Mani Mozhi Vazhi Nadappom" brought back memories of the Golden Era of Carnatic Music as well as the interplay of the music & Patriotic themes which MMI projected so well. It was a real throwback to the fifties & sixties!.....I hope the great abilities & talents of Suryaprakaskh will be PROPERLY recognised & rewarded. VKV

Apart from few known krithis like manam irangAdA (maayamAlavagowlai) ,kandavarkku(kuntalavarali),swarnakalA bhairavam (kalyani) of Swarna venkatesha dikshitar, I Happened to see/hear few rare renditions of SVD sung by suryaprakash.

1. taayE dayai purivAi (R S)-ranjani -SVD in youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXTEX7pEYLs

And

2. DevAdi devA nee vA (R N S T) - shanmughapriyA - SVD in youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib3DbuAgi1w. Incidentally the pallavi line of the krithi itself is like a RTP pallavi line, quite a mouthful of words in this krithi.

As a lay man many a times i felt i am skating in thin ice to be judgemental on concerts. But in few concerts (may be 5 to 10 max in the last 15 years) when a very profound musician who comes as a rasika talks about a concert it is surely a joy endorsed when following things happen

1. The concert has something very special in me irrespective of how others felt.

2. The musician who decides to talk stays for the whole concert and has not come to brand himself / herself and leave after few songs or leave at 08:30 pm. Here the visiting musician who came in as rasika stayed till nearly 10 pm

3. The musician decides to speak less as the music moved him/her and just sprinkle with few phrases for all in the stage.

I can think of two that happened in Rathnagirieeshwarar temple . One is when Tadepalli Lokanadha sharma speaks about the concert and the team of suryaprakash-varadarajan-ArjunGanesh-TrichyMurali@rathnagirieeshwarar temple on Feb 2015. The other was when Gs mani spoke about abhishek raghuram few years back(let me dig if i have that speech)

I am Sharing that piece of speech by TLS after sabha patron brief speech. Then sabha patron comes back post tls speech and talks about marathon concert ability of tls and a connection to gulf war and TLS. Check and download the brief 6 min speech in
TLS on Suryaprakash-Varadu-ArjunGanesh-TrichyMurali@rathnagirieeshwarar on Feb 2015

I hesitated to write about one of my favorite artsit's concert, since I could not listen to the whole concert. Now that I see no one has written,
I venture to do so.

The piece de resistance was a dwi raga RTP in HarikAmbOdhi (?) and "sumaneesa ranjani" as announced by sUrayaprakAsh:
The pallavi lines in tamil were:
"murugA SubrahmaNyA sadA yemmai kAkka nee vA, gOpAlakrihnan marugA"
...
I heard this whole concert of Suryaprakash at cleveland. PArticularly bhairavi as a main with shree vishwanatham was very well done , rest were not that great. But one thing that requires special mention is the two raga pallavi :

# The RTP was in harikAmbOdhi and SumanasaRanjani. He Dedicated to Thiruvidaimarudhur Rajagopalan Subramaniam And Madras Sundaram Gopalakrishnan(TRS and MSG).

# The PUrvangam lines was to great TRS ,lines were"murugA subramanyA sadA yemai kAkka nee vA" and Uttarangam to another maestro the
lovely msg and the line was "gOpalakrishnan marugA". The raga chosen especially sumanesa ranjani for MSG who is known for his hindustani influence was lovely and TRS mama has a general carnatic raga base and he taking up harikambOdhi was also a great choice.

15 mins Raagam in both dwi ragas
6 mins taanam in both dwi ragas
pallavi and swaras for 17 mins in harikAmbOdhi +sumanesaranjani+ nalinakAnthi + darbAri KAnadA
A 38 mins pallavi in a 2 hour concert - wow with a bhairavi main (shree vishwanatham - papanasam sivan composition).
As announced - eduppu 14 matras from samam - misra jathi triputa taalam

# While there were others who had dedicated exclusive speeches and concerts to TRS and MSG as per cleveland schedule , but for a musician to connect those two departed supernova legends and sing in one shot a pallavi coming from mmi-ssi school was simply extraordinary.

# This TRS and MSG needs special mention and it was a special icing in the cake. One has to give it to SP for singing so much all within 2 hours but that is one thing that Cleveland committee has to look up next time. I personally understand that there are organization constraints which is understandable , but for sure Suryaprakash needs more absolute time in cleveland from next year . This pallavi is just extraordinary connecting legends and was a lovely tribute to two legends who were particularly celebrated .Shri VV Sundaram gave a lovely speech at the end of the concert- I liked especially his few opening lines.

I do recollect around 2006 to 2010 where in his website it was stated he got a best concert sub senior prize in Indian Fine Arts in 1999, then on those years I used to think Indian Fine Arts has not given an opportunity. THis year in Dec 2016 he sang in IFAS after 17 years gap that much I corrrectly recollect. The review has come today in The Hindu. Wish he continues with this shruthi alignment form for years to come
http://www.thehindu.com/entertainment/m ... 061227.ece

I also wish Indian Fine Arts move back to German Hall away from the traffic noise of TTK Road -Ethiraj kalyana mandapam. I have not been to that venue yet to hear any IFAS concert . Best wishes for their logistics alignment

Suryaprakash says" “If you sing full-throated, nothing ever happens to your voice. But if you start controlling your voice to suit the mike, singing secrets to the mike as it were, that could affect your voice.”
Hopefully as years roll by he could be a good role model of voice that does not show the age and strain, ofcourse here God has to bless .Interview in deccan herald http://www.deccanherald.com/content/617 ... ormer.html

About a month back i came to know that this vidwan suryaprakash sang a shree kanthimathim - hemavati - MD as main in his debut concert which was mentioned by organizer. For sure that is remarkable to start in an arangetram around 12 + years. For sure only he and his violin vidwan of yesteryear Thirukodikaval krishnamurthy would have got hemavati in that arangetram concert.

On a side note ,I had a conversation with one of my accquitance of how few musicians in yesteryears bring in an instrument(Mali or u srinivas) like flavour of rolling brighas to a navarasa kannada krithi ninnuvina namadhendu exactly metered within that mrudangam taalam , i did not realize till i searched the you tube . Hear the minutes from 01:31 to 2:55 (kannulaku) and that 04:15 to 05:00 (shrIda nI nA). Kannulaku was far better than shrIda nI nA.

I reviewed this srothaswini RTP concert of Dec 2017. I just heard this rare srothaswini rtp , certainly a lovely raga and great elaboration.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOZ374y ... e=youtu.be

Atleast 2 or 3 decades the RTP renaissance with many ragas started with say BMK /MLV and then TNS in particular and now with a battery of musicians like Suryaprakash, Sanjay, Abhishek, Raji G,RagA and many more are bringing more rare ragas to RTP. Lovely srothaswini with bharathiyar lines . In the last decade or so miyan malhar, suryashri(dwi ma ragas) ,jog and very recently srothaswini are just suryaprakash novel attempts to bring it first and they are great.

Today june 02 is the birthday of Tanjore S kalyanaraman.

Lovely attempt that happened 7 years back when Suryaprakash sang the Suryashri RTP -dwi madhyama raga . It is certainly a first of rarity when taanam with dwi madhyama raga -suryashri is attempted with mrudangam play .Certainly the inspiration is the brilliant and evergreen Tanjore S kalyanaraman.

Today 06th November at 11:15 AM IST in www.paalamtv.com or its android or iphone app
Hear Suryaprakash-S Varadarajan-ArjunGanesh-Venkataramanan . I hope you hear that pallavi in shanmughapriya. CM is three dimensional

1st dimension -- intense musical ideas
2nd dimension - voice power and throw with sustenance
3rd dimension -A kind of carefree attitude and just going with the flow AT THAT TIME

I hope you hear that taaanam and swara ragamaliga where suryaprakash tells something like I have to accept the challenge as S varadarajan is playing everything impromptu and a medlay of ragas-ideas,voicepower and an attitude. The spectacular Arjun ganesh truly rocks with such patterns with only sixes and fours and with always first ball single by s venkataraman.

Check crama and rajeshnat review of
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=31092&hilit=suryaprakash%40mudhra

Paalamtv is webcasting for long hours today for about 16 hours and on Sunday they webcast for 8 hours.

Check www.paalamtv.com right now at 01:15 Nooon , the two opening batsmen vocalist and violinist have just wrapped alapana of shanmughapriya, taaanam is just on with 1 down arjunganesh is joining just now with mrudangam, with s venkataramanan as non striker. Donot miss it, one of a kind for another 40 mins or so.
