A veteran - intense and creative. I have posted a video of him on my youtube series on the Veena:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NSKUN32Y54
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmF3gNfvjOg
I believe he express spontaneously - in comparison to the current trend of presenting well-rehearsed-well-packaged concerts. To take the audience on a personal inner journey journey the music must be highly spontaneous and deeply sincere. For that the artist should forget the self (and the audience as well) and delve into unexplored corners leaving the well-rehearsed cliches behind and express the grandeur of the moment - only then the music elevates to a timeless state - else, however enchanting the music might be at the moment, it it still does not have the force to stand the forces of history and stand timeless for many many years.
Veteran Veena R. Venkatraman is one of the rare Vainikas who will always enlighten audience from timeless posterity. Sadly, he remains an intensely beautiful gem blushing under the unrecognized depths of the ocean!

vasanthakokilam,
I've heard of gurus teaching in students' homes (that too only a generation ago), but actually travelling across countries to teach? That should be stressful! And I believe he's in his seventies!

Well, if we have any student of his or some other rasika who knows him personally, they can confirm.
He might be doing on-site when he has concerts abroad maybe, and maybe when some institutes call him. It seems plausible now.

Iyer brothers (veena) in Melbourne and Kishan Jeyendran (mandolin) in Sydney are his students so he visits Australia nearly every year to conduct advanced lessons for them.
Artists making overseas trips to teach one or more students has been going on for decades. TS Kalyanaraman came to Australia in the 1980s to teach a student here. Some artistes (like Vittal Ramamurthy) have regular bases in USA.

Srikant,
Venkitraman Sir has many students in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth and he has come to Australia for the last 6 years to train students for arangetrams. Iyer Bros are his senior disciples and he takes advance training for their senior students. He is a true globe trotter having regularly traveled to Paris to train students and has recently been to New Jersey and London to teach students for arangetrams. Anyone who has learned from him knows the value and quality in his teaching and no doubt that is the reason he is in such high demand around the world.
Hopes this clarifies.
Kishan.

I have had the opportunity to take classes with Venkataraman Sir in melbourne in the last week. I must say it is an Intriguing experience. He is extremely patient, polite and enthusiastic when he teaches. I asked him how come he doesn't get angry when the student doesn't get it correct in the 2 or 3 times tried. He asked me 'Will the student get it quickly if I get angry'?

Rajeshnat:
Thank you for posting that Hindu writeup by Sri V Subrahmanyam - very touching indeed. Mani Mama (as Sri Venkataraman was known in our family circle) excelled in both vocal music and VeeNa at the SwAti TiruNAL Academy. His older sister (R Subbalekshmi) was senior to him by a couple of years. After several years of tutelage under SSI, KSN and CSK, they were both advised by SSI to apply for jobs for teaching VeeNa at the Academy because:
a) their excellence in VeeNa playing matched the excellence in vocal music, placing them in a unique position to apply for openings in the VeeNa department.
b) There was a huge backlog of applications for jobs in the vocal department when compared to the VeeNa department.
Both siblings joined the Academy. However, Mama quit shortly thereafter to take up a job with AIR, and his sister continued to served at the Academy for 32 years. She is a performing 'A' grade artiste and her (VeeNa) recitals are featured regularly on AIR / DD (Podhigai).
The siblings imbibed the 'gAyaki' style from KSN and honed it further to create an almost unique bANi, thanks to years of intensive vocal music training under SSI and CSK.
