One of my all-time favourite singers was Puthukode Krishnamurthy. He was one of the few musicians who was strong and richly endowed in all aspects of music, be it his amazing baritone voice or his neat renditions of songs or his classic manodharmam

The Prince & Kids

His Highness Prince Rama Varma mesmerized one and all with his concert organised by Saraswathi Vidyalayam, the School of Carnatic Music & Dance of BHEL, Trichy recently. He was accompanied by Avaneeswaram Shri S R Vinu on the Violin, Shri B Harikumar on the Mridangam and Trichy Shri S Krishnaswamy on the Ghatam.
The concert began briskly with the popular Varnam of Ramanathapuram ‘Poochi’ Srinivasa Iyengar, ‘Ninnu Kori’ in Raga Mohanam - Adi Talam, in which Prince deftly handled the Tisram. His short and sweet introductions before the songs were informative and loved by the audience.
This was followed by a composition of Tanjore K Ponniah Pillai, ‘Mayatheetha swaroopini’ in Raga Mayamalavagaula, set to Rupaka Talam. The Kalpana Swaras and patterns sung at the Pallavi were innovative and impressive.
Next came ‘Saraseeruhanabha’, a rarely heard beautiful Sahithyam of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal in Raga Desakshi, Misrachapu Talam. The Bhava soaked song was well presented in a soothing pace.
He next sang a rare masterpiece of Muthuswamy Dikshitar on Lord Brihadeeswara of Tanjore Big Temple, ‘Panchabhootha kiranavalim’ in Raga Kiranavali set to Khanta Eka Talam. The fast-paced and tricky Chitta Swara added verve to the Kriti.
Next was a Thyagaraja’s delight, ‘Ramichuvarevarura’ in Raga Suposhini, Adi Talam, with the Chitta Swara in Chatusram while the song actually being in Tisram, which was a treat to the ears.
The main song of the evening was a Tamil composition of Dr M Balamuralikrishna on Lord Muruga, ‘Varuga varuga’ in Raga Kamavardhini, Adi Talam. A detailed Raga Alapana was followed by the song with an interesting parade of Kalpana Swaras.
Prince was ably supported by Avaneeswaram Shri SR Vinu on the Violin. Mridangam Maestro Shri B Harikumar in his wonderful Thani Avarthanam played the Mohara and Korvai accordingly to suite the Pallavi lines ‘Varuga varuga’. Trichy Shri S Krishnaswamy on the Ghatam seconded his Guru.
The lighter section of the concert comprised some cute and all time favourite numbers of the Prince. First of this was ‘Chandamamanu’, a song of the Saint Composer Kaiwara Amara Nareyana popularised by His Highness.
Then came the most excited part of the concert when the kids joined the Prince to sing Muthuswamy Dikshitar’s Western Note ‘Pankajamukha’ in union that they had learnt from him at the workshop.
This was continued with the song that had made this whole event memorable and divine. Dr Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar’s ‘Mavoor valam peruga’ in Raga Sindhubhairavi set to Adi Talam Tisra Gathi was rendered by the Prince and the kids together which was very well received.
The previous day of the concert Prince had taken a journey all the way to Mavoor Kaaliyammai Temple in Tiruvarur District, where the above song was composed on the presiding deity. This shows his wholehearted dedication towards each and every song that he renders.
Then came a Malayalam song ‘Karuna cheyvan’ of Irayimman Thampi in Raga Yadukulakambhoji and ‘Varaleela ganalola’, the western influenced famous song of Thyagaraja on the request of the audience.
The concert concluded with the evergreen Kuntalavarali Tillana of Dr M Balamuralikrishna with a rapturous round of applause. The program was well attended and appreciated by the music fraternity of Trichy. The magic of Prince has been once again proved to amaze everyone starting from a kid to an old man.

Prince Rama Varma sings and teaches the Nottu swarams of MD. I understand that these were composed based on the playing of the songs in English and probably in other european languages, by the brass bands of East India Company. I would like to get links for the Nottuswarams and corresponding English songs, preferably vocal.
