The programme was organised by the Sishyas (disciples) of Sri Madurai S Vaidyanathan, a celebrated vocalist who lived in Chromepet till about a decade ago and trained many in Carnatic music. This was the 11th year of the commemorative events. Smt. Vaidyanathan graced the occasion with her august presence.
A prize distribution function being part of the celebrations was just getting over when I reached the venue. Sri. Mani Shankar, one of the trustees and a disciple of the Vidwan briefly explained the background of the event and introduced the artists of the evening's concert. There was a good gathering at the venue.

followed by Tani & felicitation of artists.

8. Viruttam: Kaadhalaagi kasindhu-Hamirkalyani,Darbari kanada,Sindhubhairavi
9. Sindhubhairavi-Visweswara-Bhajan- Swati Tirunal
10. Bimplas-Vellaithamarai-Aadi-Subramanya Bharati
11. Mangalam & Vaazhiya senthamizh
Suryaprakash could strike an instant chord with the audience as he had already learnt music from Sri M A Venugopal while he was in Chromepet and reminisced the old days.
The Kriti on Vinaayaka – Vallabhanayakasya- was laced with a few rounds of swaraprastaras. Evarani with all its ‘punches’ was well received. A compact Pantuvaraali aalaapana preceded the rare composition of Muthuthandavar (Suryaprakash said he had presented this in the ‘Moovar vizha’ at Sirkazhi recently). Swaraprastaras were given at the anupallavi passage.
Aalaapana of Naayaki had all the 'compulsory prayogas' of the raga and the kriti ‘Ranganayakam’ on the Lord of Srirangam, was rendered with serenity. Upon a request from the audience for the benefit of music students, Suryaprakash delineated the difference between Nayaki and Darbar with suitable illustrations. Violinist Sundareswaran didn’t forget to remind the singer of the old joke ‘Naayaki illaatha Durbaara?’ credited to Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer!
Kaa vaa vaa – arguably the ‘sprightliest kriti’ in varali - came in as a sharp contrast to Nayaki. The swaraprastaras for the pallavi was rendered with several swaraakshara prayogas. ‘Saahasamaa sadaa’ (SGSM SD) was interesting.
Kharaharapriya was the ‘main’ with a neat aalaapana returned effectively by M A Sundareswaran. Neraval was provided at the opening passage of charana ‘Tana soukhyamu’. Tisra patterns and sarvalaghu kurraippus dotted the swraprastara segment. Tillaisthanam Surynarayanan -the doyen mridanga vidwan and a much revered Guru in south Chennai -presented a brilliant Tani joined in by Murali on Ghatam. The smart korvai at the end for the eduppu at arai idam was nice.
The post felicitation segment had a rare Manipravala kriti in the form of a ‘non-sringaara’ padam in khamas composed by Yogananda dasa (Kerala) which the singer had learnt from M A Venugopal years back. Visweswara darishana -Swati Tirunal Bhajan in Sindhubhairavi- followed a ragamalika viruttam.
Vellaithamarai in Bimplas was the right choice for a Bharatiyaar song.
The concert marked an apt celebration of an event in memory of a great Guru.
