BS started off pleasantly with the popular Varnam. By the Hmasadhwani KS, he indicated the stuff he was made of. Rangapuravihara was nice enough, but I have heard better :) All the aesthetics of Lathangi was vibrant, particularly the Neraval for the Charanam line was outstanding. Then came the jewel-a soulful Natakurnji alapana and the Nandanar Charitram just flowed as we could almost visualise the devotee outside Thirupungur temple - BS mentioned the name :)

I have heard his Bhairavi before. This was another day, another team, another Bhairavi-still sparkled (even matched :) But the work was in the Pallavi. A simple enough line and tala. Instead of just offering the usual Ragamalika swaram, both in the vinyasa and KS he played with the swara N. He briefly told the audience about the 22-scale sruti in CM. My understanding-the vikruti swaras RGMD and N based on vibration can have 4 iterations plus the S & P = 22. He picked ragas to show the N variations like Kalyani, Surutti, Varali, Reethigowlai, Kapi Narayani, Kanakangi, Kapi... maybe more. Smart Kid, this one. It is very well to read about it in the theory books, but to present in concert indicates the measure of confidence in the young man. In fact, that has always been my vibe with BS- a mature voice and manner. Artistes can be idealistic, but he appears to have great depth of understanding of his trade plus he seems well-grounded. Talent matching ambition, if you like. Sanjay of the next gen ?

The last few were requests. Anantha has been here before and plays true to the MSG school with his fingering and bowing technique. He was with BS all the way, well matched. Balaji on Mridangam was very pleasant. A good percussionist unobtrusively adds rhythm and colour and Balaji did just that. He played a lovely thani, some passages were beautiful. Almost like questions asked and answered himself.

An evening well-spent thanks to the team.
