Commemorative Events for TKG , Dr SR

Post by Sivaramakrishnan »

The Ragasudha Hall, Mylapore, Chennai was the venue for two important Commemorative events last week.
(The programmes have been duly covered by Parivadini and available in YouTube)

1. 21.04.2017 : Function to commemorate the birthday of Sangita Kalanidhi T K Govinda Rao
Addresses by Shri P S Narayananswamy and Bombay sisters followed by
Music concert by Sri Abhilash Venkatachalam, grand nephew of TKG from Trivandrum
A very good vocal concert by the promising youngster with Raasavilaasa (Kambodhi-Swati Tirunal) as the main piece.
The varnam in Latangi was a composition of TKG. A kriti of Periyasami Tooran in Dwijavanti tuned by TKG was also sung.
The Kavadichindhu famed by TKG -Manjunigar kunthala was impressive.

2. 23.04.2017 :Birth centenary celebrations of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr S Ramanathan
Presentation on the life and music of Dr S Ramanthan by Shri (HMV) Raghu (Son-in-law of SR) followed by
Veena concert by Smt. Geetha Bennett
Concert began with a varnam in Chenchurutti composed by SR. Another kriti of SR was 'Nin malaradi' in Megharanjani (Rupaka tala). The main was Charukesi - Adamodi. Ragamalika tanam included a curios raga 'Japani' (Sivaranajni with small Dha-to put it simply) which SR created during a visit to japan.

Came late to the veena concert. At first, the sound was rather bad, with bass being overemphasised making an uncomfortable effect. Eventually, Sekar came in and twiddled some knob which made it much better, although mridangam was still too loud. Anyway, after this I enjoyed the music a lot.

Have not seen Geetha B before. She has a great smile!

Nice to meet with SRK, who encouraged me to make some comment, despite technical ignorance :)

Nick,
Unless forumites (especially those who attend the events) participate in the discussion, the happenings may suffer from inadequate coverage. It's a joint effort to enable the non-attendees 'savour' the events.
Thanks
