Re: RV, Naada Inbam, 4/7/2017
I took my place for the evening as the VIP of the day ( ) sitting in the front row, right in front of Smt Vedavalli, and it was just like sitting in her house. It was a truly wonderful evening and a truly wonderful experience.
It is really bad luck for her that, on the day of her first Chennai concert for months (since December?) she developed a cold and a sore throat. She wanted to sing a much longer concert but her throat would not cooperate. She is, obviously to all, a perfectionist. For her, 90% will not do, even if some of us would rather have her 90% than somebody else's 110%! But she herself was not satisfied and promised to sing again soon.
This week I have been able to see my favourite younger-lady artist, Brinda, followed by my favourite senior. It has been a great week! And, later this month, Suguna Varadachari, whose concerts are now sadly infrequent will sing. A great month!
"Thank you" is not enough. There are no words to express my thanks to Smt Vedavalli (I suppose it was inevitable that I should join those who call her Amma --- my wife has been lecturing me on the much-more-than-mother meanings of the word) and her wonderful accompanists, to Naada Inbam Jaya, who made this possible, to Sri Santhanam ("Mr Vedavalli," as he originally introduced himself to me a few years ago), to the Vedavali Parampara family, and to the many "Ragasudha Regulars" who blessed me with their wishes.
It really is the most amazing treat possible, to arrange a concert by one's favourite musicians!

Well done, Nick! Congratulations and BEST WISHES (from a fellow rasika, almost two decades senior) for a HEALTHY, HAPPY AND CONTENDED LONG LIFE. I hope you remember our meeting in MA and in Sri Nageswaran's house a few years ago.

Thank you very much indeed!
I have such a terrible memory, but I think we spoke in the canteen, maybe near the tea counter, at the Academy? in 14 or 15?

1.I hoped a mention would be made of Nick at the event for his novel way of marking his birthday.
2.It occurred to me that instead of Taanam snatches and the charana sahitya (Somaanana ghanasyaama) from Swati tirunal's Rama Rama guna seema it would have been hugely satisfying if a brief raga sketch with the kriti rendered in full, given the support of ace disciple Sumitra.
3.Pakkamelam was rather not at its best.
4.I was however glad to meet and greet Nick before start of the well attended concert.

Yes, SRK I have been mentioned, and was greeted by many people. I am happy!
Had it not been for her throat, I think we might have had an RTP or a very elaborate main piece. She was limited by her throat. Apparently she announced (In Tamil), to the effect, "I'm sorry, I was going to give a long concert, but my throat will not co-operate." I spoke to her after reaching home. to repeat thanks, and she sounded very rough.

Happy and healthy year, Nicholas! I forgot to send you my wishes earlier, being tied up with things. No excuse, because our other friend from good old England for half a century celebrates his birthday with fireworks too today in New England, and I will call him! Not too late here...
What could be better than being serenaded in a lofty way by the very V! God bless her, Sri Santhanam and their family.
Will listen to the concert in one go in my free time.
The best to you and Sushi

Nick has pledged to do this every year now - so enthused he was by mAmi's concert.
That mami is still singing like this at her age is our fortune. Her throat got sore in the 2nd half and she would have loved to sing more, but despite this she gave a superb recital with Sumitra akka and the team
