GAYATHRI GIRISH IN NGS MINI HALL- 4/7/17

Post by CRama »

Concert to mark 340th Jayanti of Sree Narayana Teerthar. Organised by Tirupunthuruthy Narayana Teertha Swamigal Trust, Narada Gana Sabha Trust and Saraswathi Vaggeyakara Trust.

Vidwan Tirupunthuruthy Venkatesan who passed away on April 23 this year, had dedicated his life to popularise the compositions of Sree Narayana Teerthar. The credit of putting this tiny village in the Carnatic map of our country goes exclusively to this vidwan, who in a quiet way, tuned many of the compositions, taught them to many vidwans and vidushis and conducted two festivals every year- Aradhana and Jayanthi of the Saint Composer and now the compositions are widely sung by many musicians in their concerts. It is gratifying to note that the family of TV possess the same zeal and dedication to continue the work done by their father. Smt. Chitra Visweswaran, in her Presidential address, remembered the many programmes she has done on the works of Narayana Teerthar and the energy and commitment of TV. Harisankar of NGS spoke of the selfless nature of TV, his discipline, and commitment to the cause which he also expected from other vidwans/vidushis. The concert of Gayathri Girish commenced at 6.50 P.M. B.Ananthakrishnan and R.Sankaranarayanan provided support on Violin and Mridangam respectively.

The Krishna Leela Tarangini composed by NT has got 12 Tarangams. Each Tarangam has many slokams, padyams, darus, keertanams in it. This covers the story contained in the Dasamaskandam of Sreemad Bhagavatam – from the marriage of Devaki to the Rukmini Kalyanam. This work is extensively used in dance programmes. Gayathri selected one song from each Tarangam and presented keeping the devotional fervour in tact. There were minimum manodharmam elements- raga alapana and swarams. The details of songs rendered is given below.

Tarangam 1- Sree Krishna Praadurbhava varnanam

Tarangam 12- Rukmini Kalyanam
• Kalyana Gopalam
Ragam- Sindubhairavi
Mangalam- Jaya Mangalam Nithya subha mangalam-
Ragam- Madhyamavathy

The sound system was horrible initially. It played truant many times. Till the third song, there was no feedback. One speaker was on and off. That spoiled the mood for the programme.

Gayathri Girish, as she had proved many times in the past, does lot of home work before presenting thematic programmes. Here also, all the songs except one, are new and she had internalised them and sung very beautifully. The raga alapana presented, though brief revealed the inherent beauty of the ragam very effectively. The accompanists provided full support to the programme. An excellent programme for two hours and ten minutes.

A very informative review.

This brings to my memory a couple of sacred occasions in the past where I could attend the Aradhana of Narayana Theertha at Tirupunthuruthy village itself (during Feb-Mar) under the able leadership of Sri Venkatesan. He was a strict disciplinarian too.

The events during the last two days are recorded and broadcast by AIR, Trichy. The 'pandal' erected in the premises of the Brindavanam (Samadhi) offers the right ambience for a traditional, devotional, musical 'sammelanam' and many 'apoorva tarangams' could be heard. Sri Venkatesan used to plead that popular musicians should come forward in larger numbers to participate in the Aradhana as well as ensure better coverage of the compositions. Gayathri Girish deserves special appreciation in this context.

It is heartening to see that the festival is growing big over the years thanks to the efforts of Sri Venkatesan and better patronage.

Devotees usually make it a point to have darshan at the Perumal temple at Varahoor, some 4-5 kms from Tirupunthuruthy (towrads Tirukkattupally).
