'Modern' Raagas in Naamasankeerthanam

Post by Sivaramakrishnan »

I have been observing that the Naamasankeerthanam recitals these days often feature several 'modern' raagas like Desh, Pahaadi, Sivaranjani, Aahirbhairav etc. much in contrast to traditional paddhati. Ashtapadis, Sadaasiva brahmendra kritis and Narayanatheertha Tharangams etc are all subject to this treatment. It has become sort of an obsession with most Bhagavathars who take shelter under the fact that listeners appreciate it!

Though everything is justified as part of 'change' I do not welcome such trends.

Sri.Semmangudi had raised his opinion on many occasions against such innovations. He said that the tune first set for such compositions must be taken as the Varnamettu; Mukhari for Pravisa Raadhey (ashtapadi), Ataana for Khelati mama hridaye (Sadasiva Brahmendra) for example.

Irony is that he himself had changed the raga lakshanam of some ragas and changed the pace of many songs!
Anyhow iIam against these changes whatever might be the reason.
