Hi all,
I am a brand new member. I have been listening to Carnatic / Classical music for a while now but just realized that the music somehow calms my nerves every morning that I made it a routine to drive to work with various kinds of carnatic music.
Technically, I might not "yet" know much but the important factor is that the music has far reaching effects. I will be visiting India in May (wow.. what great weather to visit!) and wanted to find out list of singers and essential CDs to buy.
(not meant to rank them.. just my random list.)
1) Sanjay Subramaniam -
2) Priya Sisters - I listen to them almost everyday and they've done really well in slokams
3) Madhurai Mani iyer - I've become a great fan of Late Mani iyer since I listened to his songs - any you liked?
4) Bombay Jayasree
5) Of course Nithyasree Mahadevan
Any other singers you would list?
Sincerely
Krish

Krish:
It is hard to come up with a list of CDs for someone else since the tastes and preferences are subjective and vary so much. I am sure other forumites will suggest their personal favorites and you can pick and choose from those lists.
To your list, I will add Neyveli Santhanagopalan.
Also, you can consider some instrumentalists too: Lalgudi, M. Chandrasekar, MSG, Mali and Ramani, Kalpagam Swaminathan, S. Balachandar
Another angle to look at it is the ragas and songs ( Varnam, Smaller length songs, Bigger length songs, thillanas and thukkadas ) that you like and then pick out CDs that contain those by the artists whose voices and tones that appeal to you.
