Talams under Nadaswara Tradition
I posted about this under another topic, but figured that might not be the right place, hence posting it here.
I was watching the Carnatic Idol program and one of the contestants in the final (Sahana) used a new talam called Kaippidi Talam. She specifically mentioned that this talam comes from the Nadaswaram tradition. Are there other such talams? Are these talams part of the 108 talam scheme? Why have they not been adopted by the mainstream?

There are infinite numbers of rhythmical forms in this universe like all our mathematical figures. Anybody can take out any one form of them and name it as he/she likes. Of course, this ‘Kaippidi’ is not one among the 108 Talas.
In fact, if a Raga is sung by any musician, we are used to give the details of the serial number of the Mela (though not the name of it) and the Arohana and Avarohana of it as they are most essential to the aspirants to verify the veracity and follow.
In the same manner, even in respect of Tala, it is essential to give the specific-serial-number of the Tala, as every rhythmical form, having the mathematical base, has a specific-serial-number along with its respective Jaati. But, most unfortunately, as the knowledge of getting the specific-serial-number of the Tala has long long ago been lost due to the fanatic and lunatic attitudes of our ancestors, now, nobody even believes that there has been such a specific-serial-number at all to each and every rhythmical form. Right from the Sangeeta Ratnakara the Great of 13th century all the authors have very conveniently brought out huge lists of Talas of their own fancy without any specific-serial-numbers as it is very easy to do so like getting a blank cheque for money. But, in the annals of our music literature, only Tacchoor Singaracharya Bros., furnished such specific-serial-numbers for nearly 150 new Talas in their book ‘Gayakalochanam’ published in 1902. If you are interested you can go through the book ‘Systematisation of Prastara Details of Deshi Talas’ which is available from the ‘Karnatic Music Book Centre, Royapettah, Chennai’.
If such specific-serial-number is also furnished along with the respective Talangas of this new Tala ‘Kaippidi’ we can find its veracity. amsharma

It is not Nadaswaram but Nagaswaram.

I very well know that it must be called ‘Nagasvaram’ but not ‘Nadasvaram’. But, many of our people are used to misspell many words like ‘Chatusram & Tisram’ for ‘Chaturashram & Trisram’ and if we try to correct them they will not correct themselves but misunderstand us. Only to make them understand I have spelt it ‘Nadaswaram’. amsharma

Visually, this musical instrument can remind one of a nAga (नाग snake) - with its big face and tapering end. May be this is the reason why it is called nAgaswaram (नागस्वरम्) by a few.pattu wrote:It is not Nadaswaram but Nagaswaram.
MW dictionary gives the meaning of nAda (नाद) as "loud sound, roaring, bellowing ...". May be this is the reason the instrument is called nAdaswaram (नादस्वरम्) by others.

No cApu-fication of any existing 35 tAlam could capture this! 10 Aksharams. The wave he is many times treating as sAshabda kriya! if that is the case a tAla that has a dRtam, two caturaSra laghus will represent it . maTya tAla with 4 offset will take it.
Many cApu tAlas retain the sASabda kriyAs of some underlying 35 system tAla! They may use one wave to convert the niShabdas.

This video series on Fundamentals of Laya by Hanumad Gana Shiromani Shri Chitravina Narasimhan talks about how many of the talas in the 108 scheme became obsolete because they were replaced or removed due to better representations.
