Post by askn »

A few specials coming up in connection with Tyagaraja's 245th birth anniversary on May 4. Today: Tyagaraja pioneered the use of a large number of ragas. Even today, many of these ragas, such as Deepakam, Chenchukamboji and Kaikavasi, do not have any other known kriti in them. Listen to the two-part programme on "Tyagaraja's Ragas" featuring a few of these gems. www.radioweb.in

I did not know about http://www.radioweb.in until someone from India E-mailed me about it and what's more, added that one of my songs was being played in the Thamizh Composers segment. Of course, I was happy. It was from the CD: INIDE VANDARULVAN KANDAN sung by Sumitra Nitin, and it was played right after my friend Neela Ramgopal (who sings the songs in my second CD) singing Shyama Sastry's beautiful tamizh kruthi ennERamum in pUrvi kalyANi! Gosh! This sounds like shameless self-promotion :(

Anyway, thanks to Sudhakar at Swati Soft Solutions (who issued the CD) for letting them play my song on air. I came to know of it in the http://www.radioweb newsletter where they thank Sudhakar and the Carnatica team for letting them air the music that they produce.
I have been listening here and there to the radio (they have a free week-long listening offer). The content of the programs reveal that they are carefully chosen, and are presented pleasantly with a couple of lines of educative information. I caught the pleasing voice of a forumite which I had been listening to on World Space. Now, it dawned on me. The newsletter of http://www.radio web was signed by Mahadevan who headed the CM section of World Space which for a few years made us wake up to good music and have it on all day long in Bengaluru! A broadcast with no hype but soothing music and occasional interviews. We missed it the past few years, but it's nice to know it's back, though in another avatar!
Look forward to my Bengaluru stay even more ;)
Interestingly, the person who presented the Tamizh Composers program happens to be the daughter of another forumite!

As Trichur V Ramachandran said in an interview, it makes a huge difference learning a composition directly from the composer. It would also make a difference to listen to composers performing their own compositions. In recent years, there have been quite a few musician-composers and they have also performed many of their compositions in concerts. This programme, available now on http://www.radioweb.in, has a selection of recent artiste-composers singing or playing their own compositions.

Composer signatures, or mudras, appear in their compositions in many ways. It could be their name, or the name of their favourite deity, their guru or their place of birth or domicile. Not that these are sure-fire ways to identify the composer. Tyagaraja's mudra has been used by other people, most famously by K V Srinivasa Iyengar, who seems to have used it as a prank rather than anything else! And there are also composers who haven't used any such identifying device. Up on www.radioweb.in now: a programme on the different ways in which composers use mudras in their compositions.

There are renditions of Hamsanadam that linger in the mind, like Chittibabu's Bantureeti, Tanjavur Kalyanaraman's Bhaarama or T N Seshagopalan's Kalyana Rama. But it is not often that one gets to hear a ragam tanam pallavi in a raga like Hamsanadam, beautiful though the raga is. Log on to www.radioweb.in to listen to an hour-long RTP in Hamsanadam by the Carnatica Brothers, Shashikiran and Ganesh.

It includes all aspects of improvisation and also shows the artiste's competence in handling difficult technical situations. This programme has Ramnad Krishnan, an acknowledged master, singing a pallavi in Todi set in Chatushra Jati Jhampa tala, 3 kalai.

Composers of Karnataka from the 13th century have made significant contributions to Carnatic music. Many of the Vaishnava saints wrote hundreds of devaranamas, while the earlier Shivasharanas penned thousands of vachanas, thus enriching the language and later music with their works.
This segment on ‘Composers from Karnataka’ looks at the works of various musicians and some kings who were composers from Karnataka.

A feature on composers from Kerala
Swati Tirunal is of course the biggest composer from Kerala, but there have been quite a few others who have composed, essentially, in Sanskrit and Malayalam, besides Manipravalam. Many of these composers were also court musicians in Swati Tirunal's time, such as Shadkala Govinda Marar and Palghat Parameshwara Bhagavatar. The Travancore royal family itself has had other composers. And who can forget Irayimman Thampi of the immortal lullaby, Omana Thingal Kidaavo?

The interesting aspect of Carnatic compositions is the importance of a definite structure and adherence to it. The Samashti Charanam is one such unique feature in a kriti where the Charanam also stands in for the Anupallavi. Muttuswami Dikshitar has composed a good number of kritis with Samashti Charanam. His kritis with Samashti Charanam also generally have a madhyama kaala passage at double the speed; a good number of them also have been provided chittaswaras, which adds another attractive angle to them.

The vaggeyakara mudras of many composers are well known, like 'Tyagaraja', 'Guruguha', 'Shyamakrishna', 'Padmanabha', 'Purandara Vittala', 'Ramadasan', to name a few. Some composers however, are not easily identified, as they do not have many compositions, or they do not use their names directly in their songs.
