Many Carnatic music composers have composed songs on holy places or kshetras. In this programme, we listen to the Carnatic compositions on Tirupati and its presiding deity Lord Venkateshwara. Of course, when one thinks of Tirupathi, one thinks also of Annamacharya, whose compositions are dedicated to the Lord of the Seven Hills. This programme includes songs of Venkateshwara by a range of composers over the ages, apart from a song on Goddess Alamelu Manga too.

M D Ramanathan was a student of the great Tiger Varadachariar, but he was essentially his own musician. His music was for himself, and the fact that it appealed to - and continues to appeal to - the cognoscenti, is testament to his sincerity and to his greatness. This concert shows the quintessential MDR and gives a glimpse into what made his music so unique and deep and so fulfilling.

It has great scope for elaboration, with its vakra prayogas and occasional phrases that contribute to the character of the raga.
