Natakurinji is a striking raga, and a relatively recent raga. The varnam, Chalamela, in Natakurinji, is probably the most often heard composition in the raga. Natakurinji is ideally suited for tanam, with the sense of comfort that it has in all the three tempos - slow, medium and fast. Exploring the raga through compostions

Even as a youngster, MLV's musical talent was obvious, and she cut her first records when she was still a young teen. Once she came on the Carnatic music concert circuit, it took only a short time for people to notice her obvious strengths as a musician - her quick grasp of concepts and her mastery of the technical intricacies of the art. A tribute to the famous music and dance critic Subbudu, in his memory.
It was believed that Subbudu's reviews could make or break an artist's career. Coupled with his fearlessness and caustic wit, his reviews were feared by most artists. Apart from being a critic, Subbudu was a reasonably accomplished musician. He accompanied many singers on the harmonium and keyboard, for concerts and bhajan sessions. On this feature, we present some renditions by H Ramakrishnan accompanied by Subbudu on the Harmonium.

The photo attached speaks volumes about the very low levels to which the present day mridangam vidwans have taken the art. Carnatis music has been made to sound like Rock & Roll or tappAnkuththu.
Alathur brothers are hving only one mike. The present day mridangam players insist on two mikes and turning on the volume to the maximum, thereby drowning the singing/instrument playing of the main artist. They have totally forgotten Thyagaraja's description "sogasugAmrdangatALamu jatagUrchi ninnu sokkajEyu dhItuDevvaDO".
Palani Subramania Pillai's accompaniment of BMK is a demostration of the above.
