Rasikas.org is ten years old on 10th February 2015

Post by srkris »

Hi All,

Just wanted to highlight the fact that we (i.e. rasikas.org) are now almost 10 years old.

IIRC, the birthday is 10th February 2005.

Well done to all long-time members, and thanks to all others for making this happen.

I would like to say a big thank you to the admin and everyone here at rasikas.org. I have learnt a lot here and have enjoyed the reviews of concerts of many musicians. For me rasikas.org is ever new, ever young ! Thanks to all.

srkris,
As an old time resident here, a woman of many words too here, appreciative salutations to you and the moderators for making Rasikas an educative, congenial and sharing community. Thanks also to all old timers and valuable newer members. Frustrated as we may be at times about this or trivial that, even cynics among us cannot deny that we are a community where we learn and share many things about music and other arts.

Rasikas.org, you and I almost share our birthdays, but as big as you are, my very young friend, may you grow into a banyan tree, sheltering innumerous rasikAs in years to come :)

srkris, and for ever an industrious moderator, vasanthakokilam, congratulations!

Happy Birthday To Us All!

Huge thanks to srkris. He calls himself "site admin." That is not really accurate: he bought the land, he built the house, he furnished it, he made it comfortable for us. It is as if we visit his home every day, always finding it open to all. He does this for the love of music and service to others. You will never ever hear him say this, or hear him asking for anything. That is the mark of true hospitality and generosity.

Forum moderators also give of their time, take all the flak without complaint (mostly ;) ) and are also an example of service. CML (not currently active here but still a veteran) and VK: Thank you!

It has been an internet journey of a lot longer than ten years, with many having been together on at least one or two previous forums, perhaps even reaching back to the days of Usenet and rec.music.indian.classical (if I remember correctly)

Can't believe that! And I thought you were in your 'new' house now!

Wordy, wordy me forgetting to say, the boss (though we sometimes think we can boss around with him) is a man of few words. Young, but contained. Works silently to the point we are emboldened to ask why nothing is done about this or that, just because he keeps quiet!

All in all, if only families were held together as we find it at Rasikas.org, the world is bound to be a better place. MAS
is a good thing to have, so long as they are heart felt and not empty words that we speak here!

CML,
We have waited enough time. If you still are not too busy, come and take a bow :)

Srkris,

Congratulations and happy birthday.

Sincere appreciation and fond compliments for the service being rendered by you and fellow moderators.

Being part of ‘rasikas’ has been a truly educative experience.

Good wishes for further growth of rasikas and our music loving community.

Glad to note that arasi has grown younger by a year and Nick has started a fresh decade of company and friendship.

Arasi, I came to India for a six-month stint (no visa for anything else at that time) in Jan 2005; the flat in Abiramapuram was ready to move into by mid-february. In December of that year, Chennai became, and remains, my only home.

Little by little, people started to tell me that they knew me from rasikas.org, and then our Chennai meetups began to happen, followed by the series of concerts that were organised and sponsored by rasikas.org members. The site has bought us together, across generations and (especially in December) continents. Let's take one example: I would have no idea who arasi is were it not for rasikas.org!

Not all members want to socialise; some value their anonymity, and that is fine too, but rasikas.org (even without lapel badges ) brings many of us together person to person as well as online. The site itself is just a part of this.

Whoa! why am I typing this when everybody knows anyway! Well, it is part of my thank you to srkris and his team member[s]. And to everybody else here. I love my life as a rasika here (although I still don't deserver the "title") and rasikas.org is a part of that.

srkris,
A momentous occasion indeed. Rasikas is not just an interactive forum for Carnatic music but a huge wealth of information for those who wish to deep dive in search for the pearls of wisdom in different threads.
I missed 2 and half years of Rasikas after the birthday before I discovered the site by chance on the net and have been addicted to the Rasikas.org ever since. :)
I wish to thank you for this gift which you have bestowed unto us and also to the tireless moderators VK, Lakshmanji, CML (please come back from your long sabbatical) and the huge list of active contributors who continue to make this forum a most pleasurable musical journey :)

Happy birthday and 10th anniversary. Let us wish that the site continues its youthful exuberance as it matures and leads a purposeful life for at least another 90 years!!

As others have said, this is a fun place to interact, get introduced to great music, learn about the past and present and argue about the future. We cover the gamut from unsavory to profound.

As a sign of maturity, we are getting into making a difference in the real world. We should all be proud for initiating the effort to help the Tampura Artists. That is the good side of us. It started with someone opining about it in a post which grew mass and momentum and fortunately in this case turned in to taking a meaningful action.

Let me take this opportunity to state a few goals for the site for the upcoming year.

1. We need to re-launch the effort to create the 'threads of distinction' or 'posts of distinction'. There are at least hundred if not more spread through out the site, sometimes buried in unrelated threads. We never really launched that effort in earnest but just mentioned it in passing and but did not give it enough visibility. Here is where we want to collect the nominations: http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=23823

My belief is that it just needs to get past the inertia so we need to give it a push. Let us post nominations in that thread as and when you encounter such greats posts or threads

2. There was an effort to create the top 500 telugu words and provide its meaning along with the context. There was excellent participation and great contribution from members. We need to finish that effort. http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=8135

Any other major initiatives for the upcoming year?

Rasikas.org facilitated along with Carnatica T A W F and several tambura players were honored in 2014.
I wish this forum all the best and hope some useful initiatives on the lines of T A W F would emerge in due course.

Ramakrishnan - or Chembai as the admins used to call him - I can't believe that it's been 10 years since you brought us, a motley crew together. It seems like yesterday when we dealt with issues of posting of 'inappropriate' recordings (the Sticky about commerical recordinsg is testament to those days), and other irritants, minor and major...

You have been the glue - admin, moderator, and rasika rolled into one that not only created the forum, but held it together. 10 years may not seem like a long time, but in that time you have made this forum an integral part of our lives, even as major changes occured in yours (marriage, fatherhood etc.). 'Thank you' seems rather inadequate, but, you have it from the bottom of our hearts!

And as for this forum, instead of saying 'Happy Birthday', can we say 'tum jiyO hazArOn sAl, sAl ke din ho paccAs hazAr'*?
* - may you live a thousand years, where every year has fifty thousand days.

A decade to look back on...
.................................

Ten years...
Tended with care

Fun years, sunny ones,
Puns and pillow fights

Matters of music, lit, art, anything
Chatters, news matters, living,

Gastronomy, astronomy, geography,
Faster than press, reviewers ready!

Foremost, the all embracing music--
Something which wields us all :)

Rasikas.org, may you see many more :)

Happy 10th Birthday and many more happy returns! Thank you to srkris, VK, other moderators, and, experts. The ability to read the posts of Chitraveena Ravikiran and similar caliber vidwans and teachers who are selfless in sharing their knowkedge had been a true blessing.

VK, as you said, as the forum matured, it could contribute to make a meaningful impact and difference in the arts space. An initiative worth considering may be to host our own web series through Parivadini type forum where we can have true research based lecdems, Nadaswaram, Venu, Veenai concerts, and, promote the deserving but unsung musicians at their prime, and, the younger crop of talented upcoming musicians. We can select an uncrowded part of the annual calendar. Another initiative could be to put together a technology outreach training for aging India based great music teachers to connect with overseas students of all ages. We can sponsor a workshop, support original research, and, create endowments to patronize deserving but underappreciated arts/musicians.

Again, wishing this forum a happy birthday!

This is amazing. Rasikas has become my secret group of coterie. No body knows about it. ;)
And I thought I was the most senior apart from the mods (strangely shows 2010 as entry date for them), but Arasi is a bit older to me. Otherwise others are mostly juniors including Nick- more reasons for ragging arguments. Or did you re-enter after a hiatus with a different handle?

I forget to thank VK & CML & Lakshman who have been moderating the site for probably the longest time since inception, particularly in the last few years when due to the twin demands of work stress & fatherhood my own participation has decreased noticeably (and which I will seek to reverse going forward)..

VK would have managed the site much better (but he is managing bigger things anyways) but his advice is something I treat most seriously. Thanks for listing all the stalled projects that we definitely need to revive.

Thanks to all the vidwans & vidushis (active and inactive on the forum) who have made the platform gain stature and value by their participation.

Thanks to inactive members (and former avatars) for their extremely valuable contributions -- those who come to my mind immediately are DRS, Coolkarni, Meena, Vijay, ragam-talam, mahakavi, ksrimech, mankuthimma, s_hari, sam swaminathan, enna_solven, rajaglan & veeyens (I may have missed several other valuable members).

priyaram78 -- Thanks for your participation

Arasi - A lady of many words and an inspiration for people of few words (like me) - a big thanks and a happy upcoming birthday. :-)

Nick H - Probably one of the most prolific participants. Thanks for being with us and among us online and in Chennai, and for your kind words.

Espras - Thanks & welcome.

Chalanata - That is great, thanks for the (musical) flowers

Pratyaksham Bala - thanks for your active participation and erudite comments.

Cienu - thanks for being here and sharing your inputs on and off rasikas.org.

Varsha - Thanks, one can always depend on you for being the music chronicler. You are an inspiration.

Thanjavooran sir -- Thanks for being with us for a long time now and sharing your perspectives.

Rsachi - Thanks for your erudite posts all along.

Cacm sir - Thanks for your wishes and blessings.

Mahavishnu - Many thanks for being with us all this while and for your extensive participation among the community on and off the site.

VK Raman sir - Thanks very much for your participation.

hnbhagavan sir - Thanks for giving ideas on how the forum can engage better with initiatives like TAWF and others.

rshankar - Thanks, the feeling is mutual, rasikas.org is not me or just the site, it is all of us who have chosen to make it worthwhile.

shankar vaidyanathan - we have not interacted before, but a warm welcome to you and hope you find the journey with us interesting.

aaaaabbbbb - thanks for your partipation and wishes.

Sreeni Rajarao - you are a name that I can remember instantly, for you have been with us for so long. Thank you.

TKB Sir - Thanks for your contributions.

Ganesh_mourthy - Another long term member who is immediately recognizable. Content-wise nothing much is lost, but a few of the dates (specially around 2007 and 2010 when the forum crashed due to viruses etc were affected. I can probably correct them but it will take a lot of effort, it is in my list of things to correct, but time is in short supply so probably I should take help from other tech-wizards). Many thanks.

Raskas.org should think and come up with a sustainable model for the benefit of the entire community - Rasikas and musicians.Sri RSachi gave some ideas on how to make the payments when the concerts are free.Recently at the Bangalore Gayana samaja - SRLK Spring festival, the secretary Mr.Krishna Prasad explained financial difficulty to hold the festival. There was a donation box and after 6 days the donation box was empty. Most of the days the hall was full. This announcement was made on a houseful day - Abhishek Raghuram. At the end of the concert most of the people rushed out ignoring the box and a handful contributed in the box.
The secretary explained the ordeal faced even to get a grant of 3-4 Lakhs for the festival.

So nice to hear we are 10 years old. Time just flies . Please do what you said . I think every migration I see quite a few features going out - Atleast before 11th anniversary let us get back the key features that we lost. Forums are just wonderful and certainly I have been permanently addicted.

Happy birthday Rasikas.org! And thanks to Srkris, Vasanthakokilam and other moderators who have contributed to the forum to make this such a wonderful platform for discussing all aspects of Carnatic music. I learned a lot from this forum and humbled by the treasure of knowledge of many others in the forum. And I can never forget the warmth, wishes and prayers you have given to me in my times of distress. I owe a lot to you rasikas.org.

You have given us, unheard, a Voice, being heard. You have connected the minds in abstraction, with minimal distraction. You and your able team of associates like Vasantakokilam have given us good net work of musical minds. The connectivity energizing, enjoying the pleasure of indulgence of communication, uninvited. With many Great Maestros, Maestros, Vidwans and Vidushees, as forumites, knowledge exchanging and sharing made possible, with only quality time investment, you and your team have enabled Senior Citizens like me to be in the thick of action and happenings, forgetting the physical restrictions.
THANKS to YOU and TEAM. Wishing a greater success in the continued journey, unending
