Today's young violinists who rock

Post by Rsachi »

Hi all,
How about a few words (only positives please) about the young violinists of today! I can't say I have heard them a lot, especially in solos, but here is my list in no particular order:
1. Vittal Rangan - incredibly sweet, can accompany almost anybody
2. HM Smitha - from Mysore/MSG school, confident accompanist, bows with great strength.
3. KJ Dileep - MSG style, Dhoni locks, plays well, speed a strength.
4. Rajeev M - accompanies "the musician", sweet and versatile.
5. Murari VVS - inheritor of the VVS bani.
6. Charumathi Raghuraman - asset on the stage, versatile, TNK plus of late some MSG touches?
7. B K Raghu - a very savvy accompanist

Please add your constructive comments, and build the list (I am not very active or up to date)
This is in a way our acknowledgement of the role these young stars play in giving us so many delightful moments :)

What is the age band for "young?"

Can we include Hemalatha, Usha Rajagopal, Padma Shankar...

Sir, excellent question. I don't know. I was applying a nebulous criterion of a performing career less than 10 years or so. Hemalatha and Padma Shankar have been around longer. But maybe you can add a listing under "Senior Young" category, hope they won't be offended.

Akkarai is the top violinist today. She doesnt belong to this "young" category in my reckoning. I think adding her to the list is a no-brainer but it is like adding Virat Kohli to the list of young batting talent debuting in IPL2016.

Is Varadarajan too old or too top to be on the list?

(Oh, yes... I just found an interview. He is a lot older than I thought. Everybody looks young to me these days  )

Komanduri Krishna aka K. V. Krishna ( son and disciple of Komanduri Seshadri) from Tirupathi is another one. He was also seen accompanying Dr. Balamuralikrishna garu on last Saturday morning at 9 AM on podhigai TV.
Sri. Mallela Tejaswi, disciple of Kanyakumari garu from Hyd is another promising youngster..

Sri. V.V.S. Murari has been performing for more than 20 years. So, he is definitely ruled out if you apply that criteria.

Few other names to add to the list: Sri. M. Vijay, who is the disciple of Sri. S. Varadarajan. He has imbibed his guru's qualities admirably. Kum. Shreya Devnath (Lalgudi bani) would be another. I am sure there are several others...

Ok folks, you're welcome to list everyone you think fits the category. No exceptions. We will figure out the seniority bit later.

L.Ramakrishnan is a rising star. Shraddha Ravindran is another notable young violinist. Have not heard from Nishant Chandran lately.

Uday,
He was a surprise find for me. Heard him in last year's Cleveland festival first. In India too, earlier this year.

Ravi,
How could I possibly leave out Kamalakiran, the darling of all! Another youngster who comes from a musical family (his great grandfather was Vinjamuri Varadaraja Iyengar, if I'm not mistaken).

All the names belong for sure to one list:
Violinists who rock.
Today's young was added by me to start identifying youngsters who have been around for a short time. But I can see we are unable to set a seniority point for cut-off.
So please do mention the person's seniority, but go ahead and list everyone.
Aishu Venkataraman - US based, TNK student
Apoorva Krishna - Bangalore based, Anuradha and Lalgudi Brahmanandam student
...

Arasi - I think many of us equate 'young' with people we're hearing newly. By that token we forget the likes of Kamalakiran, Aishu, Sahana etc.

Not really. The combined age of violin and the player should be below 333 years.

Nagai Muralidharan

In the next level there are :
S Vardarajan
Embar Kannan
Vittal Ramamurthy
Padma Shankar
M A KrishnaSwamy
Ranjani Ramakrishnan
Charulata Ramanujam
Charumati raghuraman
Akkarai Sisters

R Sachi has listed some of the very young Violinists like Vitta Rangan,Vijay,Rahul etc.
However it may be a couple of years for them to get established.
I have omitted those who give only Solo recitals as they are already established and do not fall in line.

I see older violinists in the list (even a cousin), and where is Dr.Narmada?

I'm afraid there are too many senior names listed under young violinists. A whole list of them!

Madam arasi,

Post#1 R Sachi listed all young violinists
Post#22 madam Narmada is included
In between several like Hemalatha and others included.
Just for completeness without considering age list is drawn up.
Our experts can now list only YOUNG VIOLINISTS

I stand corrected. I thought I went through the posts carefully. I did not ;( Then again, senior minds can retain only so many names in a go, I guess. However, it's good that we have gone through a gamut of them--it makes us remember their names if we haven't heard their playing in a while!

So, it's after all a good thing. If we take the word 'young' out of it, it's just perfect!
