Congratulations to the vidushi!
Wish these awards were just a genuine recognition of talent, and not a triumph for lobbying. Were it so, people like Smt. Ponnammal would not have had to wait so long.

Namaskarams to Ponnamaal amma. Sri TK Murthy mama also got Padmashri award.

It may have come very late, better late than never.. I consider this as great honour to padmashri award itself...

It may have come very late, better late than never
The Sunset Years Of Samuel Shy

Master I may be,
But not of my fate.
Now come the kisses, too many too late.
Tell me, O Parcae,
For fain would I know,
Where were these kisses three decades ago?

Girls there were plenty,
Mint julep girls, beer girls,
Gay younger married and headstrong career girls,
The girls of my friends
And the wives of my friends,
Some smugly settled and some at loose ends,
Sad girls, serene girls,
Girls breathless and turbulent,
Debs cosmopolitan, matrons suburbulent,
All of them amiable,
All of them cordial,
Innocent rousers of instincts primordial,
But even though health and wealth
Hadn't yet missed me,
None of them,
Not even Jenny,
Once kissed me.

These very same girls
Who with me have grown older
Now freely relax with a head on my shoulder,
And now come the kisses,
A flood in full spate,
The meaningless kisses, too many too late.
They kiss me hello,
They kiss me goodbye,
Should I offer a light, there's a kiss for reply.
They kiss me at weddings,
They kiss me at wakes,
The drop of a hat is less than it takes.
They kiss me at cocktails,
They kiss me at bridge,
It's all automatic, like slapping a midge.
The sound of their kisses
Is loud in my ears
Like the locusts that swarm every seventeen years.

I'm arthritic, dyspeptic,
Potentially ulcery,
And weary of kisses by custom compulsory.
Should my dear ones commit me
As senile demential,
It's from kisses perfunctory, inconsequential.
Answer, O Parcae,
For fain would I know,
Where were these kisses three decades ago?

The golden girl and the master of mridangam finally get the award. The award gains in stature by doing this...

Ask them, this is what they would say--
Award or not, I have done my bit, surely--
Teaching many, and gaining by it too--
More, learning all along, keeping
My art alive, living it, breathing it

How many long years of that!
Honors here and there, enough!
Of all, living, breathing my art!
That's the thing, me and my art!

Only regret is a matter well-known--
The span of human years on earth...

Sudha raghunathan was given a Padma Bhushan. She is in her late 40s.

Smt Ponnamal is a far more senior artist and a far far superior and a great artist. She is in her late 80s. And she is given a Padma Shri.

There is definitely something fundamentally wrong in the selection process and criteria.

The award has therefore had no value !!!

By any chance are you celebrating your 11th year birthday this year ??. As per Music Academy souvenir few years back when she received SK , it was mentioned that sudha was born on 1957. She got padma bhushan 2 years back -Jan 2015. She was 58 when she got padma bhushan award.

What Rajesh is conveying here is not really anything personal about you but about the gifted artiste Sudha Raghunathan who is not as young as you perhaps imagine her to be. If she were that young, he is merely taking that many years off from his 'guess' estimate of your age, that's all.

You will find many other threads for giving vent to our peeves (in the Lounge, for instance).

We are expressing our happiness in seeing her being recognized at last with a Padma--about the golden girl of silken voice being honored at ninety :)

Suggest you read my statement a little more carefully. All that I say is Padma Shri is normally given to established people who are young. Smt. Ponnammal is far too senior for this award. The selection criterias are hence questionnable !!

Well, I didn't know about any age limit connected with the award until now.

Still, it happens often. Someone or other questions even when all criteria are met in a person who is chosen for any kind of an award :?:

As if a bouquet of roses has to contain some thorns...

Again, fragrant bunches of thorn-less roses to both the elders..."May Rama go with them!", our erstwhile member who crossed ninety and still was active on Rasikas.org would have exclaimed... Any verses, Punarvasu? :)
