oh my god i'm getting old enough that seeing lists like that makes me think that at one per year i might not live to see the end also makes me completely forget grammar and punctuation especially the latter.

Add Aruna Sayeeram to that list. No musical merits whatsoever, but she'll get it anyways because of connections

I do not know TNS Krishna. The other two should look to athletics events in the Olympics for awards.

Another funny thing is how some people get pilloried for giving the crowds what they want, whilst others get suggested for SK!

Ahhh... delicate balance, yes. Not much of that where certain performers are concerned. Indeed let us see more.

I am harsh in my criticism of a very few artists (mostly, if I don't like them, I don't go and don't talk about them) nor only because I don't enjoy them, but because I hope their styles will not be the future of this music. They are big names (sadly) and fill halls. They can take it. My voice will not reduce their audiences. I doubt that it would even hurt their feelings. Because If I were them, listening to my criticisms, I would point at the size of the audience, laugh, and get on with... doing whatever they do.

Voleti venkateswarulu and netiyankara vasudevan being outside Chennai obviously missed out being conferred Sangeetha kalanidhi title by music academy.
Now there are a number of upcoming musicians but all of them will not get the award by Music Academy.Even among the present generation active in the concert platform will miss out unless two awards are instituted by Music academy-one for Vocal and the other for Instrumental.

Gents,
There is an article today in the Hindu which calls the Sangeetha Kalanidhi as Carnatic's Nobel:
Carnatic’s Nobel: http://www.thehindu.com/entertainment/m ... 316687.ece

I once bought a pile of MP3 albums of the Nagaswaram vidwan Sheik Chinnamoulana. Even in Naad Bhed, he has been exalted to represent the epitome of Carnatic instrumentalists.

But I found almost all the songs in those albums had several off-key moments. Honestly I was underwhelmed.

Am I missing something there? I mean on the one hand the Nobel=SK, Naad Bhed... And then going consistently off-key...

If someone can enlighten me please.

off-key how?

I have found Nadaswara vidwans interject anya swaras in their playing. This seemed deliberate, random and judicious.

I should be able to share a couple of tracks.
I mean really apa-swaras, not anya-swaras.

Suresh,
Here is an example. This Purvi Kalyani sounds a bit odd to me. Of course, I understand what you mean, the nagaswaram technique may warrant some departures from the vocal tradition.

So perhaps I am wrong.

I liked it too, for the mood and mode in which she sings. The last verse with the mudrA was very pleasing. Then, I went on to listen to Pantula Rama singing the AlApana at Tirupati. Beautiful, and Murthy's violin response to it dressed it up even more. The song attained a different dimension, with the telugu speaker's caressing the lyrics...

Yes :) CM's Nobel and ignoble. We don't have to wonder why. The SK Award thread every year amply proves it! Seriously though, we all represent rasikAs' views everywhere--of the silent members and of listeners at large...

“It is of course easier to criticize these so-called errors of omission and commission than to sit down and select a worthy claimant to the title. What is more, during the good times of abundant talent, some excellent artists are bound to miss out, especially those not blessed wit longevity. .. it is of course impossible to satisfy all constituents of the music world as to the genuineness of the claims to greatness of all the awardees.
Sriti has been advocating the broadbasing of the Sangita Kalanidhi award to offer at least to three classifications: vocal, instrumental (wind and string) and percussion.”

Unlike many Carnatic musicians, Vijaya Siva has self respect.

He knows his calibre and his crowd pulling ability - I vaguely remember a 2004-5 concert of him in MA when he filled in for Unnikrishnan and was able to hold the full house's attention.

Hence, sabha secretaries are obligated to, nay, MUST approach him for concerts. He shouldn't go after them so shamelessly like other vidwans do so. He needs the respect for his art.

So when he showed that, the Meccadummy ignored him.

This isn't burning bridges, this is preserving one's dignity.

To quote Ganesh of Ganesh - Kumaresh from an interview - 'I have trained for 10-15 years and worked so hard, so why should I play second fiddle to vocalists?'

Similarly, why should vidwans of the stature of Vijaya Siva and Amrutha Murali beg and plead for slots to be given to them?

Vijaya Siva has done the more honourable thing and walked away. If Amrutha Murali does the same, and then Prasanna Venkataraman, and a few others, the Saptarishis will be put in its place and respect vidwans.

If...

I feel this field of Carnatic music and its multidimensional politics and economics of influence is just another example of all human activity fraught with deficiencies and undesirable elements. This is inescapable. I see this every day and I have been listening to classical music concerts for over 60 years now 👴

I feel in this scenario, as a rasika, or listener, I have to follow some dharma.
1. I should attend concerts with a certain attitude of dedication and commitment to listening to the artiste/s.
2. I should openly appreciate good and great music and applaud talent, without favour or fear.
3. Stay away from gossip and uncultured talk.
4. Gather around people who demonstrate 1,2, and 3.
5. Do everything within my power and means to share good music.
6. Pray that I do not violate the principles 1-5.

Whoa! Somebody still thinks culture is relevant and not always oppressive!! ;) As Mahabharata lays it out, the world is imperfect! I would add to your list that :

Irrespective of what happens, we should try to learn more!
