Well said, Melam...This award is for music, and Ravikiran richly deserves it. Then, Federer is no tennis player, Arjuna wasn't an ace archer?

Actually, it's one of best years in MA's choice of SKs, I'd think.

After many years, the Academy redeems itself with an honorable and totally meritorious candidate for the Kalanidhi. Hope returns, albeit briefly!

Saw this eloquent and dignified tribute to Ravikiran on Facebook from his sister, Kiranavali:

"I woke up to the news of my brother & guru Chitravina Ravikiran's Sangita Kalanidhi award announcement. He has been a true Kala-nidhi (treasure house of the arts) for a while now, and with his amazing attitude towards learning, always will continue to add to his wealth of knowledge and insights. When it comes to people like him, every award serves the purpose of reminding the world that great students/practitioners will silently keep working to quench their own thirst, and in the process, enrich the world manifold. His impressive roster of achievements will continue to grow, leaving behind a huge legacy of musical thought in its wake, and dwarfing other materialistic gains significantly.

"A lot of what Ravikiran is, is my father and guru Chitravina Narasimhan's doing. Without his constant guidance - right from setting discipline goals, righting perspectives on music/life, and showing the difference between true and perceived achievement - many pitfalls would have entrapped even a tremendously gifted and hard working artist like Ravikiran. If MA has to listen to everyone and not just those in the committee (of course questions are raised if there is discussion in the committee), there would be no decision at all. And, if they have to include the criteria expected by different people, then the SK award must be discontinued. How many of the SKs are undeserved? One may quarrel about the timeliness, but by and large the SKs do deserve the award. It is a different matter that many deserving ones were conspicuous by omission. Not only RK's, but that of many that went before also were honourable.

I have not met their mother but the last time I saw her was when she was happily taking pictures of her daughter in concert in the Bhavan mini hall. She must have been a mighty special mother, bringing up children of such immense talent...

Bit disappointed people like VV Subramaniam, Vikku Vinayakram and OST didn't get the SK award. RK is a gifted musician but his moral ethics do not warrant him a worthy recipient for this award.

Almost everyone is happy about Ravikiran being nominated for Sangita Kalanidhi - undoubtedly the Oscar of South Indian classical music.

Let's wait for the December (season) to listen to RK's observations on the morning leccdems at MA and his 'SK special concert'.

Congratulations to Sri. Ravikiran! A prodigy, outstanding and versatile genius across multiple genres, an amazing teacher and composer. His achievements and contributions are far too many to list exhaustively. It's long overdue, and for quite a few years we've been waiting and wishing for it, but here it is finally!
