Nostalgia . . . Mostly! ( in Tamil script)

Post by Pasupathy » 12 Feb 2013, 04:25

I think Gopulu used the figure drawn by Raju in 1942 ( had to!) and perhaps gave it a small individual touch. Personally I think that Raju's figure always looked generally 'younger' than Gopulu's! Also Gopulu drew it first around early 60's/late 50's ? I don't have a yr as to when it first appeared...
Was Bean "around" that time?

Check Raju's figures in , e.g.,

I did not mean to say that raju or gopulu have copied the face of M Bean. In fact I was wondering on the intuitive knowledge of Physiognomy of these artists

Devan has given a very good description of Sambu in his first story. And the brilliant artist that he was and the great observer of persons in real life that he was, Raju was able to create a very appealing picture of Sambu from that description. Generally the authors do not interfere . Gopulu has told me that Devan never tried to suggest modifications to his picturisation. So I assume that it was true here too and Raju gets the full credit for the picture of Sambu!

( Note also that in the "music" related jokes Raju has drawn, many similarities of the figures to "real-life" personalities we all know!)

Please read what another great artist, Maniyan Selvan, has to say about Gopulu.
http://s-pasupathy.blogspot.com/2012/06 ... st_23.html

and also see some paintings by Gopulu.

The last time I saw a picture by him was the cover of 2012 Deepavali Malar of Amudhasurabhi.

That is a nice
As an old timer I would also add the Cartoons of "Thanu" which used to capture the
political spirit of the times. I remember his intro piece for Gemini's "Miss Malini"
an unforgettable movie...

:-(( I wish I had such pieces with me now to share with all.... Vikatan has published a "ThANu jokes" book...I have not bought it yet....
but I doubt if it will contain such pieces.
