Rudrapatnam Krishnasastri Srikantan, the octogenarian doyen of Karnatak music, is the recipient of many more such accolades for his divine music, but they do not weigh heavily on his head.
Transcendental music
You sit before him in a concert and he will instantaneously transport you to the heights of ecstasy. His transcendental music pervades your persona and makes you forget yourself in the ocean of formless beauty, which is beyond description. It unfurls before you a kaleidoscope of sounds which your soul understands but is unable to put it in words. Such is the mesmerising effect of R.K. Srikantan's music.
Vidwan R.K. Srikantan hails from a family of musicians, scholars and composers. His father, Rudrapatnam Krishnasastri was, in addition, a scholar in Sanskrit.
He was a vocalist and performed harikathas. He was a dramatist too. Music, of course, was at the top of his attributes. Srikantan's first guru was his father from whom he learnt the rudiments of music. He is the fourth son of his parents who had in addition a daughter also.
Professional musician
His elder brother R.K. Venkatarama Sastri taught him music and shaped him as a professional musician. He learnt from him the songs of great composers.
He would repeat the songs till his mind grasped the essence of the raga, the structure of the songs and their pathantharas. Srikantan would promptly take down the notations and practice them.
When his brother went to Madras (Chennai), he would send regularly the notations of keertanas, which Srikantan would thoroughly memorise and would sing them before his brother when he went to Madras.
He began to give concerts when he was just fourteen. Apart from his father and brother, he did not undergo the learning process under any other great guru.
But he was often meeting the great maestros of Karnatak music like Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Musiri Subrahmanya Iyer and Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, practice some compositions before them and thus keep on making additions to his repertoire.
Rich collection
These tiny drops of music soon made him possess very rich collection of not only the popular ragas and compositions, but also rare ragas and kritis. His life is a raga of tireless striving stretching its arms towards perfection.
R.K. Srikantan's life is not one straightline without curves and frills. It is full of ups and downs. But he has taken them in his stride. He took his B.A. at Mysore and was married when he was twenty two (1944). His wife (Maitreyi) was fourteen.
Though he had made a name as an accomplished musician, he was not economically well off. He was trying to make both ends meet by giving tuitions to young aspirants.
He was holding concerts also. After some years, Srikantan with his family moved to Bangalore in search of greener pastures, and continued to teach and sing at concerts. He got a job at the Akashavani Station, which was just then started in Bangalore. The remuneration was not, however, very attractive but the couple had learnt how to manage within the income and lead a contented life.
Admiring crowds
In due course, R.K. Srikantan made rapid advances as a professional vocalist and his kacheris were always packed with admiring crowds of music lovers.
His family also was expanding in the meanwhile. Every time the couple had a baby, they would take a vow not to have any more children. But soon it would be forgotten and there would one more addition to the family. Maitreyi and R.K. Srikantan are the parents of seven children: Ramakanth, Ratnamala, Uma, Nalini, Vijaya, Kumara and Chandrika. They have no regrets nor have the children. Srikantan is immersed in music. His better-half bestows an abundance of love and care on the family.
Ramakanth and Ratnamala have become accomplished musicians. Ratnamala is happily married to Prakash. She is a popular singer of Bhavageethas. Ramakanth is an MSc. and teaches in a college. But he has continued to be keenly interested in Karnatak classical music and shares the dais with his father at the concerts.
Busy schedule
Even at his ripe old age, R.K. Srikantan has a busy schedule. In addition to training his pupils and giving kacheris, he participates in many activities like demonstration-lectures and has always taken much interest in educating and enlightening music lovers about the nuances of Karnatak music.
He upholds the old tradition but is always engaged in trying out innovations within the ambit of parampara. He owns a library of books on music and spends some time daily in study and contemplation. He has held a number of concerts all over India and abroad.
Sing with dedication
He says he has always striven to adhere to the advice the old Vidwans gave him. He recalls what Ariyakudi used to say that attention should first be given to rasikas.
He has tried to follow the kacheri pantha of Semmangudi and Maharajapuram and takes care to emphasise sahitya and laya suddhi, kirtanas and kalapramana.
He says he has benefited from instrumentalists like Palghat Mani, Lalgudi, Palani Subrahmanya Pillai and others. Palghat Mani Iyer once said: 'Yours is atmartha music. Stick to it. Sing with dedication.'
He always maintains a sense of proportion between raga elaboration, length of swaras and so on. Above all, a clean life is the sine qua non of success. That is our Srikantan.
