Wow! Many disciples in this parampara, which has Sri SSI at its helm, right?
Best wishes!

RShankar: You have raised a good point about SSI's sishya parampara--this was a subject I wanted to comment on in my SSI postings but somehow lost the "thread".

While the series of concerts speaks highly of PSN's pedagogy and his commitment to preserve a glorious tradition,I must point out--and I have been a witness to-- that in his time,SSI was mildly criticized ( behind the scenes) by some of his own disciples that they were not getting much solo chances and that constantly accompanying him(as forumites may recall SSI sang when he was 80 plus--when most of his disciples were in their late fifties or early sixties) would relegate them to the "backseat" and hence not capable of holding their own.

THIS is not true. There was lot of jealousy among people in those days that SSI was
hogging" the limelight "aided" and "abetted" by his "sycophants""(celebrities like TTK,the Maharajah family in Trivandrum) and was not willing to help his disciples in extending the patronage of these celebrities to them.Rather than "canvass" amongst the Sabha Secretaries for his disciples,(incidentally he did this for TMT as far back as 1948--TMT was 25 at that time--he urged my Father to give a concert under the Shanmukhanada banner in Bombay which my father did--(there is a subplot to this anecdote which I will cover if any SSI forumites are interested!!! ).Disciples like Chellamani Sir(Bombay--Father of playback singer Hariharan and one of the first Gurus of the Bombay Sisters),Vaidyanathan(who sang for Mrinalini Sarabhai troupe--see my comment on Mrinalini's obit),K.R..Kumaraswamy(brother of K.R.Kedaranathan)--were all encouraged to take the "teaching' route as their voices were not suited to concert singing and SSI's own assessment that they were better off as Teachers--which in each of the case mentioned above turned out to be fortuitous as all of them had remunerative teaching careers.

PSN to his credit is tremendously supportive of his students--no matter how busy he may be during the Music Season,he would make time for his disciples concerts whether they sang in Tambaram or Mylapore or KK Nagar. His style of teaching is perfectly yoked to the voice and vidwath of his disciples. Suffice it to say if you have learnt from PSN and should you choose to switch to another teacher you would not have to "unlearn: anything as the Bani is so assiduously imparted!!!

Wishing the series of concerts a great success!!
