Premiere of Ravikiran's 35-tala compositions

Post by divyamramesh »

Carnatica is presenting Contemporary Composer festival on February 29th and March 1st 2016 featuring exclusive compositions of Sangeet Samrat Chitravina N Ravikiran in 35 talas premiered for the first time as a special 2-day series at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore.

Ravikiran, who recently created world history by setting the entire 1330 Tirukkural verses, to tune in a record time of 16 hours, was also the first vaggeyakara to create the 35-tala compositions. He was inspired to do this in Aug-Sept of 1997, in 30 days, averaging more than a song a day. The 35-tala set spans over 3 languages - Tamil, Telugu and Sanskrit. They include two varnams and one tillana, the rest being krtis. They cover a range of ragas including ghana ragas like Todi, Kalyani & Kharaharapriya, rakti ragas like Sahana, Ahiri & Anandabhairavi, ragas such as Phalamanjari, Rudrapriya and Bahudari, desheeya ragas like Behag as well as one of Ravikiran's discoveries, Garudapriya. Some of these feature interesting chittaswaras and madhyamakalas. Deities eulogized include Vinayaka, Rama/Krishna, Shiva, Devi and Subramanya. The songs were composed in no specific order of talas.

I attended yesterday and all sessions were good.Good to hear songs in a no.of talas not so often heard.

Amrita Murali sang exceptionally well. Her music was both melodic & aesthetic.her songs in bahudari (tisra ata) and sriranjani (misra ata) and a couple of more were excellent.her voice is capable of producing very minute gamakams and brighas beautifully.

GarudapriyA ( kAntAmani sans P ) was sung by carnatica bros.A tough song not just to sing but to listen to also. They also sang one in kApinarayani which was good & a few more.

K.G sang compositions in off beat ragas like garudadhwani and rudrapriya & a few more.

Bharat sang hindolam varnam and a good kalyani & a few more.

Not only composing songs but to write lyrics for such complex talams are not that easy.Kudos to Ravikiran.

Chief guest Seshasayee gave a sensible and nice speech.

Thanks for sharing your experience ganeshkant.

Ravikiran Ji's brilliance shines in all these compositions set to 35-Tala , that he has composed in his 20's.

Given the fact that he has composed over 700 compositions since age 11, the Carnatic music world is looking forward to many more programs like this, that will show case some of his other compositions.
