Dear All,
I am performing a kutcheri in April in a Devi Temple. I wanted to do it a bit differently like rendering only devi krithis in this kutcheri. My plans is start with the below mentioned krithis.
varnam - amma Ananda dAyini (gambhEra nAtai) / mAthe malayadhwaja (khamas)
srI rama saraswathi (nAsikabhUshani)
I would need your help ins choosing some poluar devi krithis. It would be also helpful if you suggest based on the below points.
> Composers (Thyagaraja, Dikshitar, Shyama Shastri, Swathi Thirunal, Annamaya, Papanasham Sivan, Oothakadu)
> 2 of the krithis should have scope for detailed rendition of raga, niravil and kalpana swaras)
> Krithis in Aadi, Triputa and Chappu talams
> Raga preferences for detailed sining (Bhairavi, Harikambjoji, Charukeshi, Pantuvarali, Reethigowla, Varali, Natakurinji, Khamas, Devamanohari, Nata Bhairavi, Kharaharapriya, Dhanyasi)
> Raga preference for other short renditions (Abhogi, Huseni, Surutti, Saraswathi, Lavangi, Atana, Valachi, Neelambari, Anandabhairavi, Rasikapriya, Kanakangi, Desh, Mukhari, Gowrimanohari, Vasanthi, Sudha saveri, Bihag, )
> Mangalam other than Bhagyada Lakshmi
> Any krithis on bhadra kali

Re: Song selection for Kutcheri
Sri Unny,
I want to give you the biggest secret formula for song selection:
Choose what you sing best from within a list made up of a bigger set of songs that will appeal to your audience the most.
If it is a temple audience, especially at an evening prayer time, you have to sing more popular songs and ragas, and in the local language.
Avoid vivadi ragas, complex long sahitya songs, and long alapanas, swara singing, grahabheda, RTP etc.

Respected Unnykrish
The formula for a successful concert is variety and class . Choosing a variety of compostions , presenting them with credibility and good presentation , and singing songs that you are fond of or that suit your mood on that time. Also very imporatant is flow of manodharma . For all of this , a large listening experience is necessary.
Starting with a Ganapati kriti/varnam or a short Tyagaraja kriti . Adding swaras if you like .Then the following sequence must be like this :
1. No two songs in same talas must be repeated consecutively .
2. Presenting compositions of several composers.
3. Presenting compostions of various tempos , gathis
A sample list that I have prepared :
1. varnam - Mate
2. Hiranmayim lakshmim - lalita- rupakam dikshitar
3. Janani Ninnuvina - Ritigowla - Misra chapu - Subaraya sastri - alapana
4. Akhilandesvari - Dvijavanthi - Adi - Muttuswami Dikshitar
5. a. viruttam - Abirami andadi - kiravani
5. b. Devi niye thunai - Kiravani - Adi - Papanasam sivan - swaram
6. Kadaikkan vaithennai - begada -misra chapu - ramaswamy sivan- raag sketch
7. Sri Kanthimathim - Hemavati - Adi - Dikshitar - Alapana , niraval , swaram
8. Nannu kanna talli - Sindu kannada - Tyagaraja - Adi
9. Kamalambike- Todi - Rupakam - Mudduswami dikshitar - Alapana , niraval , kalpana swaram , thani avarthanam
10. Slokam - soundarya lahari -22 - ragamalika - Kedaragowla , saveri , mand , ratipatipriya
" BhavAni tvam dAsE mayi vitara drishtim sa karuNA
Miti stOtum vAnchan kathayati bhavAni tvam iti yaha
tadaiva tvam tasmai dishasi nija sAyujya padavim
Mukunda brahmendra sphutamakuta nIrAjithapadAm "
