Kalyani

Post by wordpecker007 »

Dear friends,

I did a great deal of searching for a Kalyani thread. No luck. So i began one with a lovely Kalyani alapana by Prince Rama Varma. This was sung during a Soorya concert in 2008. Unfortunately the recording has been quite haphazard. Yet it is still a pristine Kalyani.

A memorable Kalyani by none other than the great GNB.
GNB- Nidhichala- kalyani

Kalyani is sucha beautiful ragam, pleasure listening to the recordings. Looking forward to more :)
Let me suggest another must-listen-to kalyani. It is by none other than TNS for a commercial album with cs murugaboopathy. The album is called meeting of minds or something like that. The song rendered is kamalamba bhajare.

karthikbala posted this in another context ( http://rasikas.org/forums/post149683.html#p149683 ), let me link it here in this thread.
-----------

enduko nI manasu - kalyAni - Adi - Tyagaraja Swami

It is indeed a very satisfying composition. Hyderabad brothers have rendered this quite a few times.

Here is a YouTube clip by Charulatha Mani with lyrics and meaning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOfb2TjIrxw
The full audio clip with ragam, swaras, is at:
http://charulathamani.com/clips/endukoni.mp3

----------

Sung excellently and soulfully by Charulatha Mani. Highly satisfying even for those who may be on an overdose of Kalyani.
The lyrics and meaning being shown in the youtube video helps to enjoy the song that much more.

Thank you for starting this topic.

In this lovely article on Kalyani: http://sriramv.wordpress.com/2008/11/25/kalyani/

the following is mentioned: "Yet such is the powerful personality of this rAga that even when the madhyama is avoided in rAga AlApana, it is possible to steer clear of any transgression into shankarAbharaNam. There is a lecture demonstration by Musiri Subramania Iyer, where he has dwelt at length on this aspect of kalyANi."

Does anyone have Musiri's lec-dem by any chance? Sounds very interesting.

Till recently, I used to hate Kalyani because I could not associate any type of feeling with the raga. The only Kalyanis I listened to were MMI's Ethavunara and Vasudevayani. After listening to a few recommendations by fellow rasikas members, I've begun to appreciate the richness of the raga and have gone on a Kalyani spree on a number of occasions. Sanjay has dealt with Kalyani exclusively in his Kalyani album. MDR seems to have had a wide repertoire in Kalyani and had very good manodharmam. I recommend his Kamalambhajare.

SSI's pankaja lOchana is another favourite of mine in kalyANi. KalyANi's treatment of nishadam alone could possibly distinguish it from shankarAbharaNam. S/P avoiding phrases are also much more common in K than in S. At least based on melody, I think K is much closer to hamsadhwani than to S.

RTP - Kalyani - KJY (Kousalya Kumaranai)

One of the best Tanam exposition !!!

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/D4b ... As1NMvHdW/

KJY slowly builds up the mood of the raaga in the aalapanai which runs for about 10 minutes. Then the violin takes over. When the audience reach the peak of the raaga, then slowly the Tanam component starts. I haven't heard so many detailed Tanam expositions before but found this one to be simply amazing ! Excellent company by the violin and the duo goes for about 15 minutes and then the pace picks up. Then the pallavi takes over with swarakalpanas before it finally ends. 1 hour ponathey theriyathu !

I remember a fantabulous kalyani by NSG 10-12 years back at kalarasana (rani seethai hall). it was a 4 hour concert and kalyani was the main item. more than an hour of exotic kalyani.

if anyone has a copy, please upload it.

Now, i recollect, it was in 1996.

Have to agree that kalyani presented by both NSG and of course his guru sri T.N.S's are satisfying both in emotional content and intelligent presentation.
Am yet to hear KJY's rendition And prince rama varma's.

Is it not a done thing to linger on the Prati madhyamam in Kalyani? I'm asking since most of the (carnatic)artists I have heard never linger there - as in only the Ma tone. It's always pa-ma-pa-ma or ma-pa-dha-ma or some kind of combination. Voleti sir is an exception; his lingering there gives it a very different beautiful feel. Does anybody else sing that way?

One raga at a time- Kalyani

Post by Rsachi »

Dear rasikas,
After hearing several people sing Kalyani recently, this topic came to me.
Why don't each of us list
1. Our favourite vocal alapana in Kalyani - a vocalist
2. Our favourite instrumental alapana in Kalyani - an instrumentalist
3. Our favourite composition in Kalyani
?
And whatever comments we wish to add.

I request each rasika at one time to list only 3 choices as above. That will bring variety and interest in this thread.

Let me begin with my favourite Kalyani song, rendered with matchless verve and melody by the one and only MSS!
https://youtu.be/NN0nc9Sh6uQ
Needucharanapankajamula - Pallavi Gopala Iyer - Kalyani-Adi
I would request Cienu to name the accompanists - sounds like Kandadevi Alagiriswamy and Karaikudi Mani and THV to me.

Thanks folks!

Dear Sachi

This is from the 1958 concert at Jaffna -Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka)

Sri R K Venkatarama Shastry -Violin
Sri V Nagarajan - Mridangam
Sri Kothandarama Iyer - Ghatam

It is not surprising that you guessed Sri T K Murthy as Sri V Nagarajan is also from the Thanjavur Vaidhyanatha Iyer School

Sri Nagarajan who used the play the Mridangam right handed later switched to left handed Kanjira after an accident to his right hand prevented him from playing the Mridangam.

The recommendation to switch to left handed Kanjira playing was made by my Grandfather Sri T Sadasivam

Thank you. Your grandmother is simply brilliant in this!
Sri Sadasivam's advice saved a musician's career indeed. I have heard Sri V Nagarajan 'live 'a few times on the khanjira.

KVC, yesterday, Kunnakudi Balamuralikrishna took up Kalyani as the third song after Natakurinji varnam and Bouli Sri Parvathi Parameshwaram. He sang a typical KBMK style Kalyani full of pizazz and did full justice to Birana Brova Ide. Vittal Rangan, B C Manjunath and Guruprasanna rose to the occasion. Very memorable!

Sir, to me it sounds like a subdued TN Krishnan. In quite a few places, I can hear his unique gamaka/bowing effect. But the typical tuning sound (with pegs) is missing. And he generally has more exuberance.
And not for the first time, one could mistake VVS to be TNK...

SR Janakiraman in a Lecdem talks about cycle of fifths producing kalyANi naturally - and wonders how some musicologists quote lakshana kArAs to claim this rAga is not suitable for tAya and Alapa.
