Future Mridanga Vidushi - Sathya Ramesh

Post by Vasanthmusic »

I attended the Mridangam Arangetram last weekend organized by Sarvalagu Percussion Art Center(San Jose, California), at Tatvaloka, Alwarpet, Chennai. It was the debut concert performance of Sathya Ramesh (aged 13) who learns Mridangam from her father, Sri. Ramesh Srinivasan, Disciple of Sangitha Kalanidhi Sri. Vellore Ramabhadran.
The young girl had to accompany Vidwan Sri. Lalgudi GJR Krishnan & Vidushi Smt. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi on the Violins and Vidwan Sri. Suresh Vaidyanathan on the Ghatam. Adding to her pressure, the Chief Guest of the event was Sangitha Kalanidhi Sri. TV Gopalakrishnan, who was present for the entirety of the event. Sathya was blessed with the presence of Senior Violin Vidushi Lalgudi Srimati Brahmanandam, Mridangam Vidwan Sri. Mannargudi Easwaran, Sri. Neyveli Santhanagopalan, Sri. Chitravina Narasimhan, Sri. Chitravina Ravikiran, Carnatica Brothers, Sri. Madurai G.S.Mani, Dr.M. Narmadha, Sri. Papanasam Ashok Ramani, Sri. Vittal Ramamurthy, Sri. Mullaivasal Chandramouli, Sri. Manimaran, Sri. Cleveland Sundaram, Sri. Cleveland Balu, Sri. Sekar Viswanathan & many other popular musicians and music connoisseurs who were assembled to bless the young one.
The Concert began with Lalgudi Sir’s varnam in Hamsavinodhini followed by Teliayaleru Rama in Dhenuka. Sathya Ramesh, with no fear or any facial expressions, steadily followed the compositions to the T. Sri Krishnan and Smt. Vijayalakshmi were impeccable on their violins, as expected. Their constant enjoyment and encouragement of the young vidushi was a treat to watch. Sathya also was able to handle the tricky kalpana swarams that the duo challenged her with in Teliayeleru. With the first 2 numbers, Sathya demonstrated her steady Sarvalaghu ploy of playing the Mridangam which is truly native to her school. The concert proceeded with the following compositions:
Bhajare Bhajamanasa - Kannada Misra Chapu (Ragam, Swarams)
Neerajakshi Kamakshi - Hindolam Rupakam (Ragam)
Thamadam Tagadaiyya - Mohanakalyani- adi
The main piece was in Kharaharapriya (Nadachi Nadachi) which was presented with ragam, neraval, swaram & the Thani Avarthanam. Sathya started her thani with full confidence & made her guru proud!! High points were the clarity of Meetu & Chaapu that are so unique to the instrument. She was also able to play complex permutations of Nadais along with the ace Ghatam artist who generously gave vital support to make the accompaniment section look complete. The Korappu was exhibited adeptly in konakkol by the budding vidushi along with Sri. Suresh which was one of the highlights of the Thani. Through the entire length of the Thani, Sathya displayed constant rhythm & clear sound of the mridangam which I felt was commendable for her age. With more concert listening & practice one can be sure that Sathya will certainly rise into a good seasoned Mridangam Vidushi.
The next piece was the Pallavi in Hamsanandi Ragam set to Khanda Nadai Adi(Ragamalika - Kaanada,Neelambari, Bouli, Bhageshri, Desh - Swarams) followed by another brief Thani. The concert concluded with a lovely Mandu thillana & Mangalam !!! The violin duo did not compromise the level of their concert playing and infact challenged Sathya to her fullest potential. Sri.GJR Krishnan acknowledged Sathya’s hardwork and sincere dedication towards her mridangam learning and wished her success in her future endeavours as a mridangam vidushi.
TVG mama & Sri. Santhanagopalan sir had gracious words to bless Sathya Ramesh & the team. Kudos to Sathya’s parents for having found her interest in mridangam at such a young age & also for teaching her the right lessons, exposing her to the right source of inspiration at different points in time. The evening concluded with a very emotional moment of honoring the son and daughter, Sri.Mukund and Smt. Padmini of their Adi Guru Sri. Vellore Ramabhadran mama.

I'm sorry that, due to conflicting demands, I wasn't able to attend this arangetram. I'm sure it was a wonderful event, and send best wishes to Sathya, along with the hope of seeing her on the concert platform here

Best wishes to Sathya! She joins a small but illistrious line of vidushis who have played the mRdangam on the concert stage, starting with what appears to be one Ms. Hamsa Damayanthi (going by the MMA records).
