the function started exactly by 18 25 hrs with vedaparayanam by eminent pundits. Few points noted are given below
Ms vijayalaxmi subramaniam compered the show.
m/s vidhya, nithya, prathibha and aksha subramaniam sang few rare pieces of Gopalakrishna Bharathi and Thyagaraja without accompaniments.
nattai G B
etlaturikithvo vasantha Thyagaraja
everae ramaiah gangeya bhushani Thyagaraja
malayathae sarasangi Koteeswara Iyer

All the guests were presented with a Saraswathi painting crafted by SR. The speciality of this is a deviation from the usual Samudhirika lakshanam that Saraswathi with Jada mudi. SR quoted a verse from devi sthuthi as reference in support of this .

Devaki Muthiah

He Is still a youth as depicted in the invitation even at this age of 90yrs
Even today he is handsome. His paintings are well known in other countries too. In Hawai few paintings are available with Ramani dharmaraja. Normally entry inside his painting room is restricted to his family only. But in her case it is exception. He is a very simple and humble and Abhirami bless him with long ane healthy life.

Murali
He is a noble person. Very fine human being. Multi faceted personility. Music, musicology, painting and acting over eight decades. Wonderful life span of 80 yrs with service to fine arts. He is a fine teacher too. he is very generous in giving and helping others. He has learnt music from , HMB, Gowri amma ,Ambi deekshadar, ARI, MMI and also from chamber misic of veena Dhanammal. He is a treasure of musical knowledge and scholar also. He has documented the famous 72 mela kartha kritis of Koteeswara Iyer. Expert in vivadhi raga. He learnt music from his father and painting from his mother. SR's pani is unique. He stopped acting immediately after his marriage. He is a gold medalist from the institution of Madras arts and crafts. He has established unique shape and form for the Tirinity through his painting. He is not a concert musician and always interested in teaching others. He has enormous memory power . All should assemble here the same way to celebrate his 100th year.

Cleveland Sundaram
In 1978 TRS was the first musician to be invited to US for the Thyagaraja aradhana.
1980 Nedunoori
1981 SR. Ramanad Raghavan who was there accompanied him on mridhangam. During those days only 300 NRIs were there, out of which only 100 showed interest in carnatic music. 24 concerts were arranged in all major cities. Each concert was different in the menu. Viz one was with Morning ragas and the other with vivadhi ragas , Styles followed by different schools of thyagaraja and so on. His involvement in every activity of the committee was praise worthy. He even assisted the cooking group in preparing vadai. In all his concerts he used to explain the beauty of rare raga and then sing. He still admires the finess of a car shaped clock gifted to him. All his paintings were sold on a single day with a very very low price. He was not interested to sell his paintings at an exhorbitant price though people were prepared to buy. His association with him for 28 yrs makes him happy.

KV Ramanathan
He is also from mylapore and a product of PSS high school. SR was the consultant for Sruthi [Paattabhiraman] His remarks used to be educative and the victory of sruthi is because of SR only. There is a recording of the interview with SR long back by AIR and it is yet to be broadcast for the reason not known.

Krishnasamy of NGS
Prameela gurumoorthy introduced him to SR 15 yrs back. He prepared a speech on Gopalakrishna bharathi for 2 hrs 30 mts. He has been gifted by SR big tritinty portraits. He has published a book of kerthanais by Koteeswara Iyer. He has spiritual mind and made out line sketches of 63 nayanmar with write up. Pollachi mahalingam approched him and arranged for the publication along with his other creation of Thiruvilayadal Puranam.

Vijayalaxmi subramaniam
Mentioned that once SR sang at Kanchi in the presence of Paramacharyal, 10 songs and each one was appreciated by His Holiness by rolling one fruit towards him.
Pappu Rao
He is an amalgamation of old and new. During morning session of MA he patiently sit for the entire proceedings and used to encourage old and new thoughts and ideas. He has painted 24 Theerthankaras for Jains To bring out life to the paintings he studied sanskrit works of jainism and consulted lot of scholars to get proper idea for painting. He is an encyclopedia. His centinary will be celebrated with more befitting manner in a bigger way.

Madurai GS Mani
Venkata Mahi charted out 72 MK . 32 regular and 40 vivadhi. This is suitable for global music also. Too much of discussions on vivadhi raga will result in ill health. SR is the fore runner of vivadhi melam His love for vivadhi melam turned him to be a musician. Since KI 's 72 MK is in tamil not know to all. This is perfectly documented by SR only. In AIR he has given national progrms on rare ragas. During morning sessions of MA there will be fighting and shouting only. But SR will be very calm witnessing the scene and finally offer few useful remarks/ comments summing up the discussions. He should be applauded for his efforts in establishing the beauty of 72 MK.

VKV
He read the speech. He spoke about his painting only. His ability in creativity and innovation is enormous. His paintings are of Ajantha and Shanti Niketan style.

Dr. Prameela Gurumoorthy
She is his daughter in law and married to SR's second son. She got married on 5th may 1988. He is father to her and used show affection and love. His cassette of 72 MK is with ragam, niraval and swaram and that too with suddha swaram. As per his view no gamakam to be given. All his paintings are in par with Ajantha , Ellora and Buddhist style. It is painful why his has not been confirred with Padma award till now. He is a good carpenter and will do the frame work himself for which he maintains a mini workshop. A capsule is buried with his paintings for future reference and existance in US. He used to sing varunapriya which will definitely bring rain. He is a Rishi today.
TRS presented him with a shawl and gift at the end of the function. I would have omitted some more interesting anecdotes. KIndly excuse.

I had the privilege of witnessing this very special function - special because it was an evening when Carnatic Music celebrated the 90th birthday of one of its living legends - octogenarian, Sangeetha Vidwan Sri S Rajam, and more special because the celebration was an expression of gratitude to the Guru by his students. The gamut of speakers and well wishers on the occasion was testimony to how popular Sri S Rajam is , and the extent to which his music and art have been celebrated and respected by the people he has interacted with , in the last many decades.

Each presenter gave a crisp and interesting narration of their association and interactions with Sri S.Rajam. All of them had one thing to mention in common - his modest approach towards the art form, and positive outlook towards people, the qualities that define his persona and have made him what he is today. The speakers touched upon Sri Rajam’s contribution to carnatic music, which are aplenty - documentation of the 72 Melakartha Ragams of Koteeswara Iyer, his unique style of handling and popularising Vivadi Ragams and rare Dikshathar Krithis, his active participation in bringing out Shruti, the carnatic music magazine, to name a few. The speakers also shared with us, their heartfelt admiration for his artistic interpretation of the Carnatic Music Trinity and Hindu Gods & Goddesses which are an enormous contribution to Hinduism and to Carnatic Music tradition and culture. My Guru, Smt Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam gave very interesting anecdotes during the introduction of each speaker, thereby sharing her experiences as Sri S Rajam’s disciple. One of the incidents she shared with us speaks volumes of his musical prowess. They had travelled to Kanchipuram to sing at the famous Kamakshiamman temple. On the concert morning, they visited the mutt premises to obtain the blessings of Maha Periyavar and render a few krithis in his presence. It was planned to be a short visit, since the Periyavar was in the middle of his daily morning puja. After each song that Sri Rajam rendered for him, the Maha Periyavar who enjoyed the music blessed Sri Rajam with a fruit, and gestured him to sing more. The concert in the mutt went on for more time than originally planned!

Sri S Rajam, in his unmistakably modest and calm style, thanked each of the speakers and well wishers who had gathered for the occasion, during his acceptance note. He gave a very insightful note on how important it is to learn music for the love and beauty of the art form, rather than to render concerts. True to everyone’s words, wishes and prayers, we will definitely look forward to the centenary birthday celebrations of this stalwart, whose contributions are of great value to Carnatic music and art.

Memorable words indeed: how important it is to learn music for the love and beauty of the artform rather than for rendering concerts.
He is a living testimony of this statement. May he live to be a hundred :)

Can anyone upload the painting of SR , the Goddess Sarawathi with jadamudi sothat all of us can have the blessings. The artwork was displayed by SR himself before presenting it to the guests and could not get a glimpse from a distance.
