Nice find Meena. We can only wish it was longer than the 2 minute clip. It is interesting it is done in the style of music label promotional material ( called EPK - Electonic Press Kit ) where they cut between songs and interview.

For those who are french-challenged, like me, here is a google translation.. with all the funny imperfections...
-----------
Born in India from the south in a family of amateurs of music, Sowmya initially was initiated with the song by his/her father before following the teaching of S. Ramanathan, an eminent musicologist and famous singer of the style Sangeetha Kalanidhi, and supplemented its training with Smt. T Muktha, of the duet Brinda-Muktha. In parallel, Sowmya A continued studies of chemistry in Madras from which it leaves, holder of a control, in 1992. Rewarded by the many ones and prestigious price for song, it is also on the initiative of a festival of carnatic music, d' an encyclopaedia on Cd rom on the same subject. Impassioned technology it was the first artist of India of the south to record didactic video Cd and assembled with friends data processing specialists the Carnatica gate, on which it gives courses of song. Its career of singer carried out to turn to Asia (Honkong, Malaysia, Singapore), in Oceania (Australia, Nouvelle Zealand), in the United States and in Europe (Kingdom Plain and France). Filmed with the Theatre of the City (Paris).

VK,
Holder of not a 'control' but a masters degree from madras University.
The french text sounds as though she sings in the bANI of sangeetha kalanidhi (instead of adding that to the name of S.Ramanathan)!

Meena,
Thanks. Just heard Sowmya (had trouble downloading it at first). Though it is a short clip, her voice sounds beautiful. Wonder what else she sang besides the SankarAbharaNAm in Paris...

How come lady performer is called 'vidUshi'? Though 'vidUshi' means 'wise woman', it is the feminine form 'vidUshaka' - a jester ; does not seem to be feminine form of 'vidvAn'.

Eh? The female equivalent of 'vidvAn' is 'viduShi', not 'vidUShi'!

Hard to believe it's the same Sowmya!

A catchy song with some carnatic overtones without sounding too carnatic! (Charukesi?). For Sowmya, this is probably all child's play :)

Quite an attractive song, indeed! Can't catch the ragam but sounds rather similar to veTri koDi kaTTu from Padaiyappa (to my ears anyhow): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0Yt7mQ8oKY

Yeah, maybe a hint of cArukEsi. But like I said, I'm a total dud at looking for ragas in film music.

A few years ago, an opera-loving rasika played for us a very unusual home-recording. To our astonishment we heard "O sainte médaille", Valentin's aria from Faust sung by Smt. Sowmya! (of course the baritone's aria had been transposed to an appropriate tessitura). Very sporting of her to make the effort and play along with an unusual request !

Sounds very interesting - has Sowmya studied opera? More to the point, will she entertain a similar request in a concert setting? That would be awesome.

And thanks, this has me digging up some Gounod - the last one I heard was Bobby McFerrin's crowd-pleasing Ave Maria which is fun.

Not that I know of...I believe she was played a recording and then was asked to have a goat it... Anuradha Sriram though, did undergo some training I think in the US. While the tunes or melodic content are generally childs play for a CM vocalist, it is the sound production that is the key differentiator. Even the softer mezza voce phrases, pianissimi, have to fill a concert hall *without miking*. The Met in NYC for instance is more than twice as large as Narada Gana Sabha! Audience in even the uppermost galleries, while having only a microscopic view of the stage still expect to hear the singer clearly.

It starts as cArukEsi then switches to sarasAngi during the 1st instrumental interlude - quite neatly done.

Sowmya is an intelligent musician and has given some weighty and memorable numbers. But somehow, todays Express review is a let down as I had been to the concert and found her really very good. Guess critics have their own way of conveying and convictions...

Can someone kindly tell me a few details about Ms.Sowmya's sister Ms.Bharathi? She mentions about her sister in the Margazhi Maha Utsavam session. I was just wondering if even Ms.Bharathi is a performing musician. I may be wrong.

Smt. Sowmya is being conferred with the prestigious Sangeetha Choodamani title this year by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha. The ceremony will be on the opening day of the sabha's Gokulashtami series in August. Congratulations to her on a richly deserved recognition!

Can we attribute the Raga as close to "Ahir Bhairav"?To me the tune resembles Dasavatharam song"Kallaikandal Kadavul theriyadu(pleads my inability to quote the correct lyrics).Charukesi tinge is also there.

Music is an ocean. Nobody could fathom the length and breadth of this great ocean. Even the stalwarts never claim that they know everything and use to say that they are still students. But the judges of Jaya TV’s Carnatic Idol programme terrorize the young aspirants. The judges should think what they have done at that young age. The gen next is very skilled and is capable of handling any challenge without any fear.

Sowmya! What happened to you? Does a dheergamana rishabam not occur in Poornachandrika? I would like to cite some examples like “Thelisi rama” chittai swaram, “Palukavemi naa deivama” (;R;S R;;;)” etc. In such kritis isn’t the 'Ri' dheergam? It is better Sowmya sheds the I know it all attitude and refrain from passing rude remarks.

suswaraa, I have not watched the Carnatic Idol. Leaving aside whether such questions are appropriate or not, it will come as a surprise if Sowmya did not get her facts right. May be, you can email her through her web site http://sowmya.carnatica.net/ and post back any reply you get.

I was referring to this episode. Watch the third part. (She clearly says that in poornachandrika the ri will not be dheergam at 2:30)

hmmm...interesting.

Reminds me of the exchange between Sowmya and Sri V Subrahmaniam a few years ago on the similarities and overlap between prayogams in janaranjani and Poornachandrika. The discussion is archived here: http://www.carnatica.net/sowmya/academy ... review.htm

Suswaraa, are you saying that Sowmya is contradicting her old position on the deergam "ri" that she has written about while notating palukavemi? I heard Sowmya's comment on Carnatic idol; I just want to make sure I fully understand the context in which you are making your argument (which sounds valid to me).

Perhaps, as VK suggests you should just write her and ask.
