After I made this post in the Question/Answer section I thought this might merit a seperate thread, in the general discussions thread. Moderators, if you think otherwise, feel free to remove one of them

Now, please read on!

Purandara Dasa's Compositions in the Rasika Wiki

I wanted to update on Purandara dasa compositions on the Wiki here at rasikas.org.

Although the work correcting the typos in Purandara Dasa compositions from Sri Lakshman's database started almost an year ago, it had not seen the progress it was due.

The websites www.daasasahitya.org which was hosted by the government of Karnataka ( I think) has ceased to exist after its breif existence. This makes the Rasika WIki the only comprehensive source of Purandara Dasa compositions ( if we complete it).

Last week, I made a plea for help on Sampada, a popular Kannada discussion forum for volunteers for completing this work.

http://hamsanada.blogspot.com/2007/12/blog-post.html
http://www.sampada.net/blog/hamsanandi/06/12/2007/6563

I am really gald to say that many people have come forward for joining hands in this work. In just one week, there has been a fantastic progress that wasn't seen in last one full year!

You can see the latest edits in the wiki here:
http://rasikas.org/wiki/doku.php?do=recent

You can see that more than 60 compositions have made it to the wiki this week

I have also created a google group for the volunteers. Any rasikas, who can understand kannada can make a difference. As they say, it is but small drops that make an ocean!

If you want to be a volunteer, please do send me an e-mail by clicking on my handle on the side. Every bit helps.

The websites www.daasasahitya.org which was hosted by the government of Karnataka ( I think) has ceased to exist after its breif existence
I checked. It works. The correct url is http://www.dasasahitya.org. Also, there's www.dasarapada.org that has some lyrics of dEvarnAmAs of haridAsAs.

Nonetheless:
I wanted to update on Purandara dasa compositions on the Wiki here at rasikas.org.
Laudable endeavor. Will also try to chip in with availability of time.

Hey,thank you so much.. I keep hearing vaired renditions.. Certain musicians tend to pay too much attention to the melody alone and forget the lyrics.. Thanks again..

Ramakriya,
The Wiki is quite helpful... I picked up couple of sahityas from there. Is there a plan to provide word-by-word meaning and a gist meaning at some stage ? would also love to hear the audio of the padas (similar to how the swati tirunal site has been set up).

For now I would like the meaning for Baghyada lakshmi please.....if this has already been provided elsewhere, a pointer would do.
Thanks

Hi ramakriya,

I have just now added a song to the purandaradasa directory.

The song is: "tUgire rangana" in mohanam. A beautiful " thAlAttu" by purandara dasa. I did not find it in the list , so I thought would add it. Hope it is correct., Since I learned the song from my guru only.

wish to help you more.

Thanks for that. The way me (and family) have learnt it, the second line of the first charanam has "nelidu butti" (meaning born in a womb).

Also the third charanam is rather different the way I know it - "manO vaak kaayadinda maadida karmavu..." is the first line, and "swami" is used instead of "dEva" :)

I think that this is one of Purandaradasa's greatest compositions, being emotive, having a philosophical bent and also for being in one of my favourite ragas - Kalyanavasantham.

There used to be a site 'www.musicalnirvana.com'. This site had almost all lyrics of Purandaradasa.
Unfortunately, someone else has usurped this site and it it is no longer accessible. If anyone could tell me how to access this site now, I would be grateful. Incidentally, this site had the lyrics of other composers also (Swati Tirunal. Papanasam Sivan, Syama Sastri etc.)

Dr. J. Subbiah: That site lives on in an incomplete way in the internet archive site: http://www.archive.org

You can start here for the nemerous archives of musicalnirvana: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://musicalnirvana.com

Here is the link to the list of purandaradasa compositions from that archive:

http://web.archive.org/web/200801130411 ... andaradasa

It can be frustrating since many links do not work. You may have some luck in searching the archive for those missing links. The problem is, if a link is
based on a server side script, these types of archive links do not work. Unfortunatley, the lyrics links are of that kind.

An effort is being made to make available audio files of purandaradAsa krtis alongwith lyrics and meanings. Presently (see below) the folder contains about 280 renditions of about 100 krtis. I have another 300 renditions of about 100 krtis which would also be added to the list in due course.

Though I tend to work somewhat erratically, I would certainly want to contribute to the wiki project,

Chinamayee - there is a section called - 'Sahitya & Identification Requests' - if you post your request there, instead of anywhere wily-nily, I am sure the response will be better. Please post one request per topic, and try not to tack your request onto a pre-existing one.

I congratulate the large number of volunteers engaged in this effort.
I do have a niggly feeling on one aspect though. There are likely to be many grammatical and typo errors creeping in because of the plethora of extant versions and liberties taken by popular singers.
An authentic program like baraha will be needed for transliteration.
An editorial team is also needed. I can volunteer a couple of hours a week. But a Wiki workflow will be needed.

Prof. SKRR's work is considered a classic among Kannadigas.

Today Visaka Hari handled Purandara Dasa Segment of her Upanyasam titled "Endharo Mahanu Bhavu' at Music Academy beautifully. The other two composers she took are Muthuswamy Dikshitar & Andal. The programme had a calming effect on the mind after hearing the terrible news.
