Some think it is sAvitri and others sindhubhairavi.

There is an eternal debate as to what raga is this song composed in! There is no ri1(chinna ri), so not sindhubhairavi. There is dha2 (periya 'dha'), so not natabhairavi. And recently Gowri Ramnarayan noted that 'people say it is in rathipathipriya'. But for the first line there is no trace of rathipathipriya either.
But, it is one humdinger of a tune. My choice is Natabhairavi since only once in the charanam does chatusruthi dhaivatha shows up.

naarayanan,
Strictly swara based raga identification/classification has severe limitations since as we all know the swaras do not sufficiently identify the raga.
Having said that, does it sound like natabhairavi to you?
I agree it is a great tune with hard to nail down raga. I have heard it being referred to as 'Misra Sindubhairavi' with the 'misra' qualification being there to account for any non-adherence to sindu bhairavi. But that is still not satisfactory to me since I do not sense a whole lot of sindhu bhairavi there.

The notes occurring are besides S and P
R1 taarasthaayi, and R2
G2, M1, D1 and both N2 and N3.
So it can belong to melas 8,9,20 or 21.
9 and 21 can be ruled out since their signature is not there.
The most likely is 8 whence Sindhubhairavi is a potential candidate....
The promiant M1 definitely rules out Ratipatipriya.

But the real question is, does it sound like any of those ragas ( swara considerations aside )?

It's an elusive one!
'nILa niRattu bAlakan ": certainly jOnpuri. How about the rest of the line and the song? No! It's a mishr something for sure, weaving in and out of whatever it is.
Another film song which it resembles is: E zindagi usIki hai from anAr kali. But how much?

Whatever may be the raaga, it has become one of the biggest hits of the century, Another song to capture the minds of lakhs of rasikas is Kandan karuni puriyum vadivel, yet another song adopted from an original hindi song gobilalitha

With kATRinilE, three things come together: the singer, the lyrics and the haunting melody...

Absolutely - and after all, kATRinil vanda pATTu (gItam) could have acquired numerous shades and nuances as it wafted around, making it tough to pin it down to one rAga!!

We should probably look at it from the HM point of view. After all, the tune was borrowed from the Sheila Sarkar song TuTa gayI mana bInA.
I had uploaded it earlier. If someone wants it I will post it again.

Lji,
Here you go:
The entire song is a beautiful description of the magical properties of the music that issues forth from kRshNA's flute.
pallavi
kATrinilE varum gItam kaNgaL panitttiDap-pongum gItam kallum kaniyum gItam
The music (gItam) that wafts (varum) by on the breeze (kATRinilE); music that moistens (panittiDum) one's eyes (kaNgaL); music that is capable of melting (kaniyum) even stones (kallum)!

kATTu vilangum kETTe mayangum madhura mohana gItam
nenjinile nenjinil inba kanalai ezhuppi ninaivazhikkum gItam
Music that is capable of making dead (paTTa) trees (marangaL) sprout (taLirkkum); music in which the brilliance of the paN (paNNoli) carresses (konjiDum) every note!
Sweet (madhura) and enchanting (mOhana) music that jungle (kATTu) beasts (vilangum) hear (kETTE) and become intoxicated/fascinated (mayangum)!
Music that awakens (ezhuppi) embers (kanalai) of love (inba) in the heart (nenjinil/nenjinilE) and erases (azhikkum) memories (ninaivu)!
caraNam 2
shunai vaNDuDan shOlai kuyilum manam kuvindiDavum vAna veLi tanil tArAkaNangal
