No, a song from the movie 'Miss Malini' where the heroine talks of her ambitions (to become the DIL of a lawyer in mylApUr, and go to kuttAlam for the summer months of vaigAsi and Ani etc. etc.) :P

Rajani - as usual, a very interesting comment. I will have to think about that.

Trying to locate the 1947 Miss Malini movie song book.

In the mean time, here is another interesting song in the same movie: ''kAlaiyilE ezhuntirundA kaTTayOda azhuganum'.

PB, thanks.

That is quite funny ( hope the movie scene is along humorous lines )

That insertion of dEsh is quite charming.

BTW, what does she say she will do with her MIL and FIL?

That part is not very intelligible. But my guess is "mAmiyAra mAmanArE vaccEnA pArEn"--"wait till I take my revenge on them".
Obviously it is a dig by the d-i-l on the m-i-l (not as much on f-i-l) for any real or perceived mistreatment (as the term mATTuppeN implied---one who has to work like a mADu (bull)). The original well-intentioned name was
mARRup peN"--an additional daughter. :D

Sri PB, I assume it is Smt. Vasundhara Devi (Smt. Vyjayantimala's mother) who is the singer...LOVELY - Thank you! ANd she sings it correctly as kuttAlam. It is quite a social commentary on the life of the people who lived in mylApUr of those times, be it the patronage of the sabhAs, or the penchant for HM (parodied with that dES bit!)...

To be literally correct, mylApUr should be written as mayilAppUr. Goddess Parvati worshipped Shiva in the form of a mayil--(peahen or peacock) at this shrine. The British butchered the name by spelling it Mylapore.

Ah.. that is what it is for!!... So what is the story behind that? Mylapore CM aficionados learning HM for the sake of status and differentiation in the social order?

The words about 'mAmanAr & mAmiyAr' are not clear. As suggested by Sri mahakavi it could be ‘vaccEnA pArEn’ which is a familiar expression. But I hear it as something like 'veTTEnO pArpEn'? Anyway, once the lyrics book is located, we will know.

During 1947 when the movie was made, there was one famous advocate family in Mylapore which was directly involved in Carnatic Music as well as Cinema, and had two eligible bachelors! Advocate V.Sundaram Iyer, who was staying in Nadu Street, Mylapore, was fond of Theatre and Carnatic Music. In the early struggling stages of Ramaiya (later on known as Papanasam Sivan) it was Advocate Sundaram Iyer who supported him. Sundaram Iyer had three sons - Rajam (S.Rajam Iyer) and Balachander (Veenai S. Balachander) and Gopalaswami.

In the 1934, almost everyone in Sundaram Iyer’s family acted in the movie ‘Sita Kalyanam’. Sundaram Iyer acted as Janaka. Rajam was the hero Rama, his sister Jayalakshmi was Sita (a controversy erupted on this). Another sister Saraswathi appeared as Urmila. Balachander (Veenai S. Balachander) acted as a musician. The music for the film was set by Papanasam Sivam.

May be, Kothamangalam Subbu jokingly referred to this family in the ‘mylApUr vakkIlAthu’ song, and made fun of his advocate-friend in the last line – ‘mAmanArai ..’!

PB:
Good anecdote! You rank with randorguy who brings movie and music incidents of the past to light.
That naDut teru is really a landmark, accessible from East MADa street. When I was little my father used to be a teacher of a school called "vanniyar sangam elementary school' in naDu street. I tagged along behind my father (at a safe distance) to attend that school for a year.

Oh!
With all humility I acknowledge your compliment. Thanks a lot.

Mrs. Bala is so excited to learn that you were a student of the 'vanniyar sangam elementary school' and that your father was a Teacher there! She studied in that school upto third standard in the years 1957-59.

I too have mada veedhi connection - I stayed for a few months at East Mada Street (near Maddala Narayanan Street cutting) in 1961!

Request to the MODS: Can we start a new topic to discuss the songs from Miss Malini and shift all the posts that are extraneous to this thread into the new one?

In mayilAppUr vakkILAttu mATTup peNNAvEn, the line in question is very close to what MK says: inda mAmiyArai mAmanArai veccEnO pArEn!

Ravi,
'kAlaiyile ezhundirundA *kaTTaiyODe azhuvaNum (*viRagu)
karumam piDicca aDuppu mOTTaik kaNNIrAle mozhugaNum
nAlu kuvaLai vennIr kAicca nAlu jAmam UdaNum,
nALaikkellAm Udi Udi, nAccularndu SAgaNum

iRakkai muLaicca ration card--ai (...?) tEDaNum
iragasiyamA uLundu vAnga reNDu daram ODaNum...

Others may be able to complete the song.

Ravi,
Sundari Bai who co-starred with Pushpavalli in this film sang this song.

Mine was an arranged marriage (what else can it be in those days :D ) to the daughter of a business magnate. As I was planning to go to England to pursue higher studies my mother was scared that if I went without a traditional partner I would fall for the viles of a 'duraicchani' :D
She was sagacious as we happily celebrate the 52nd year of our wedded bliss!

This must be the hindi version of this song, in Mr. Sampat! But I prefer the tamizh version way more...
